HI! HI! I'M THE GUY FROM AO3 IF IT WASN'T OBVIOUS FROM MY CRUSH 40 THEMED BLOG!!

(note . i might be reaching with A LOT of this stuff but this is MY special interest and hyperfixation and i get to say what i want. also i think you'd understand what i mean when i say things)

so, let's get one thing out of the way. on it's own, i am all of me is both a v1 song and a gabriel song on their own in my head

^ this, to me, is v1. the "black writing" in my head is directed towards the writings found on the murals of gabriel in 4-3. "unleashed a million faces / and one by one they fall" all the husks and demons in hell being there for who knows how long, before the machines (or in this case, just v1) come around and start killing them all off. in the grand scheme, v1 is the villain in this story (killing the denizens of hell without mercy, even with a reason thats still a villain), the "black hearted evil", but at the end of the day is still the protagonist, the "brave hearted hero"

^ and this is gabriel. it REALLY reminds me of his monologues to v1, but the beginning is what really sells it. those first two lines really encapsulate who he is as a character, or at least who he was before v1 came around- a weapon for the council (who, if you REALLY wanted to reach for it can also be seen as the evil in this case, and these two lines can be seen as him killing the council). "i laugh and watch you fall" can be seen as the fight in 6-2, going from a accusatory anger to manic laughter. and again, story-wise, gabriel is the antagonist, the main person against the protagonist, v1 (and also was the villain of the past lore, killing off minos & sisyphus most notably when they tried to make hell better). but he's the "hero" of this story (if you think more towards just the current part of ultrakill and not the past lore that takes place beforehand), trying to stop the villain, v1.

now, how does this all tie into gabv1el? simple. two different things. one, i like thinking about how those two verses mentioned above would play out if they said these things to one another, especially with gabriel's end. the manic laughter he has in 6-2 is probably one of the strongest forces the gabv1 fanbase has to show the canonicity of the ship, and "i laugh and watch you fall" really reflects there to me

but also the chorus of the song is? very gabv1 in my head?

like this really reminds me of the almost. i don't want to say OBSESSIVE nature of gabv1el since i know they can be a lot more than that but that's definitely slightly part of it. their obsession with each other that drives them closer (pun only slightly intended) to one another. "capture you or set you free" too. it can be seen from either perspective of the two. for v1, kill gabriel like its programming wants it to or let him live. for gabriel it's the same- kill v1 like how he was supposed to although, now he really has no reason to do so), or let it live to keep observing it and watching its movements and actions (which we have slight proof of him already doing! his dialogue in 6-1). you could also see "can you see all of me? / walk into my mystery" as gabriel talking to v1. he knows about v1 but v1 doesn't know about him. as you play the game more you learn about him through terminals, so by that logic v1 ALSO learns as it progress more, or "walks" into the mystery.

this part also applies to what was said above^

anyways! all in all i think this song for SURE is v1 & gabriel respectively and if you really reach it can be gabv1el. there's definitely crush 40 songs that are more gabv1el than this one (like down & dirty or 2 nights 2 remember) but hey. it's a fun challenge to connect just about anything to crush 40 whenever possible :p

honestly i kinda shipped it at first as a joke w/ my best friend but now we both ship it Unironically & consider ourselves their #1 fans

like we mention them way too much. once a day at the LEAST. anyways now to my reasoning:

v1 is a machine who was built to continue war and NOT BUILT TO FEEL ANYTHING. no remorse. no doubt. it's a machine. all it does is fight non-stop, going deeper and deeper into hell to keep itself alive for longer. it will kill anyone if it means keeping itself active for just a minute longer.

we play as v1 and we are naturally conditioned to not care. we move through the game, kill enemies as they are in our way and we need to progress. while some may care for the story — such as myself — a majority of people who play this game do so for the gameplay. the violence.

all of those who replay the game are like v1 in the sense we love this violence. it sustains us, keeps us entertained, motivated. we don't care at that point because all we love about this game is violence and death. whether this be an intentional side effect of the game or not, i don't know. but it's sure as hell what i can take away from the 70+ hours i've played and replayed ultrakill.

meanwhile, gabriel is an angel. he follows the will of god, judges and executes sinners on the hourly. he is loved by heaven for HIS PERSONALITY and ACTIVE NATURE, the former something that v1 can NEVER, EVER have. WILL NEVER ARCHIEVE. he is blind to his faults, to who he's wronged, to the lies the council tells him.

until v1 arrives. then everything changes.

he is defeated by a mere object. and he is angry. god's light gets ripped from him and he lets it happen and the pain is UNBEARABLE; one, to quote the game, "which even the fires of hell could not compare".

hatred forms in his heart. he doesn't know it's passion until after their second duel, according to his apostate of hate terminal entry.

he starts aesthetics of hate ENRAGED. he yells and taunts it with more aggression than he had in their first fight.

he ends that fight humbled. he gives himself time to think about his actions, realizes all of the wrongs he did in the name of god, he slays the council... you know the rest.

and that is why i love them. they would just never work in the true canon of the story.

as the player, we will have to kill him. whatever 9-2 will end up as will be gabriel and v1's final duel. we cannot change the outcome of the story because we aren't in control of it. the story is set in stone.

i love content of gabriel and v1 that's sweet, that's way too peaceful for these two who do not deserve solace. i've created some of my own, too, for my own enjoyment. but i also love seeing them rip each other apart. i love to see v1 not give a shit about gabriel because IT DOES NOT CARE FOR HIM. HE IS BLOOD IN ITS EYES AND ONLY BLOOD. as a machine built for war to continue it, it must enact its purpose. it cannot go against what is programmed of it.

v1 is what opened gabriel's eyes, his release, to see the world beyond the council's will. gabriel is blood to v1. he may as well not even have a name because it does not matter in the end. he is blood. he is fuel.

there's so many ideas you can have of these two and people will love it either way, no matter how painful some of these ideas may be.

they can have a peaceful ending, fishing in the island hidden away in wrath and v1 having gained some sense of care, some sense of love, even.

gabriel can die in treachery, v1 can watch his body fade in front of it and an elevator will open for v1, allowing it to descend deeper to satisfy its endless hunger.

they could be in another universe and care. they could be in another universe and hate each other. no matter the reason, no matter the stakes at hand, people can love. people can learn a purpose beyond their programming.

angels are the children of god, powered by his light. machines are the children of mankind, powered by their blood.

but, what if they could be powered by something more? what if they gain a new reason to live that's beyond their intended purpose?

that leads to theories, and those differ depending on who you ask. every fan who has responded in the comments or reblogs of this post have their own reasonings to why they love these two. many can agree with some of their points, others not as much.

we all love for different reasons. we all have different meanings for love. this is the same for how gabv1el is interpreted. a lot of us may see them the same and agree with how we see and/or interpret them, others will see them differently. some may disagree.

and yet, we still love.

but to me — someone who cannot feel love — that's just love, isn't it?

... anyways i think half of this ended up becoming my personal interpretation of ultrakill???? MY BAD LMAOOO I WANTED TO JUST ANSWER THIS QUESTION ON A WHIM BUT. UH. I COOKED...? IDK MAN. I HOPE I ANSWERED UR QUESTION OP.
