just fucking around with a character design today! When I'm designing new characters that I actually want to have a coordinated look I like to start with literally a mannequin and then draw the clothes on top so I don't get distracted by whether or not the anatomy is correct, the pose looks good, etc and I can just focus on picking & coordinating clothes, then I draw them on the character later

It was really fun trying to come up with something that felt cowboy-esque and retro and futuristic all at once

he looks just like my other android character on purpose because they're all intentionally supposed to be a bit the same face wise - kinda blandly attractive in a mass market sort of way, and androids with the same face model are likely to have the same base hairstyle

(The other one actually has a refsheet that I wanna post but it looks REALLY dated)

A little lore tidbit from my setting is that androids are required to display their serial numbers on their clothing, so you can tell a bit about an android character by whether or not they choose to try and find a way to obscure it without technically circumventing the rule

this is fairly old and I was kind of unstoked about how the color palette/anatomy turned out (and that bizarre sink thing) when I finished it but the background came out pretty okay! definitely on my To Redraw list

I don't think I'm an incredible artist by any means and I think it would be very Dunning-Kreuger of me to give any sort of advice on how to be good because I'm nowhere near professional level and do not actually know how to make art that is very technically good

but I definitely can give perspective as someone who has improved a lot and is actively improving and I can very conclusively say that the thing that helped me improve the most, that I had to figure out myself, is:

draw the naked body, then make that layer a little bit translucent, and draw the clothes on top. every time. including the genitals (to an extent). the first time I did it, it did feel weirdly sexual, especially as I'm someone who isn't super comfortable drawing porn, but it is so much easier to understand how the fabric should fall when you know exactly which shapes and forms it is falling ON. it's easier to draw shirts when you know where the breasts are, it's easier to draw pants when you know where the penis is. Actually drawing the body makes a world of difference

it took me a long time to figure out that I should be doing this because i'm not somebody who's all gung ho about drawing naked people and wouldn't do so on my own

but the first time I did I was like oh. oh fuck. this is the cheat code. and it gives me passive anatomy practice every time i draw which has been a huge asset and has helped me improve a lot
