Excerpts

The Tortured Poets Department delivers some of her most cringe-inducing lines yet. The title track alone boasts the worst on the record, even if it’s a stab at sarcasm. “You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,” precedes the clunky “I scratch your head, you fall asleep like a tattooed Golden Retriever.” 

Elsewhere, on ‘Down Bad’ she’s unceremoniously “crying at the gym”, and ‘Florida!!!’, an otherwise cathartic, Southern gothic-imbued collaboration with Florence Welch is marred by the line: “My friends all smell like weed or little babies”.

I Can Do It With A Broken Heart’ highlights her unrelenting work ethic that doesn’t falter amid personal tragedy. But, it seems poised for internet virality than anything more substantial, given its restrained verses that plod along before catapulting into a euphoric, Carly Rae Jepsen-indebted pop chorus. Lyrics like “I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday everyday” are almost too glaringly obviously written to be lip-synced into an iPhone 13 front camera.

Musically, it’s an album mostly devoid of any noticeable stylistic shift or evolution. It descends into a monochromatic palette, existing in the same Jack Antonoff-branded synth pop as ‘Midnights’, yet struggling to capture any of its brightness.

Most bizarre, though, is ‘But Daddy I Love Him’, which seemingly exists as her response to the backlash against her brief relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. Their fleeting romance, which seems to be the muse for much of the record, triggered an explosive reaction from her fanbase who were distraught at Swift’s public association to the singer, given his slew of controversial comments (a few of which centred around her soon-to-be collaborator Ice Spice).

Swift seems to be in tireless pursuit for superstardom, yet the negative public opinion it can come with irks her, and it’s a tired theme now plaguing her discography and leaving little room for the poignant lyrical observations she excels at. It’s why the pitfalls that mire her 11th studio album are all the more disappointing — she’s proven time and time again she can do better. To a Melbourne audience of her Eras Tour, Swift said that ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ came from a “need” to write. It’s just that maybe we didn’t need to hear it.

did you guys notice that the main theme she put about her relationship with joe in this album was that it felt like a cage to her because he was depressed. the song, so long london makes me feel so sorry for joe because she is resenting him for having his blue days and not snapping out of his depression faster so that she can have a perfect wedding. it's so insensitive given how joe was there for her during her darkest days and pulled her out of it, deleted her social media apps so she wouldn’t see the mean things people say about her etc etc. he was there for her when nobody else was. but she couldn’t be there for him when it was his time. she got bored and started rekindling her fling with matty when joe was dealing with his issues on his own. and she wonders why he wouldn’t marry her?

the worst thing happened after the breakup. she knows that joe deals with depression and yet she sent her fans after him to harass him on a daily basis for a whole year! she used the cheating rumours as a marketing scheme to release an album about matty. she let her fans harass any woman that worked with joe. how can a person be so vile?

Unkind reminder when it comes to Genocide and ethnic cleansing, there is no "nuance".

Israel is committing ethnic cleansing and genocide. The Palestinians are suffering and have been for 75 years. So no again, no nuance here.

Something I’d like to note is in the finale it is made VERY clear that in episode two, Cooper could have killed Maximus if he wanted. He knows where the weakness is in the armour. He was running circles around Max in the fight but was never actually trying to kill him. It was almost a game.

Its also indicitive of something we see Cooper actively try to smother. His humanity.

FALLOUT — 1.08 "The Beginning"

This scene demonstrates why I love how Vault-Tec is written as an evil corporation. It's not the usual mustache-twirling, over-the-top villainy you see in other media. It's quiet, subtle, and very realistic, which only serves to make Vault-Tec that much more terrifying.

When Cooper finishes describing how Vault-Tec was responsible for the deaths of countless people, the executive here does two things: a) he makes their deaths about himself (ALL WHILE NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGING THEM!), and b) he makes it about "Product Management."

It really emphasizes the theme that corporations like Vault-Tec and the suits who run them at Vault-Tec only care about the company and its products and NOT the people who use them (or are being used by them).
