Identify the thought.

“I'm a failure and can't do anything right."

"My partner and me got into a fight, so they're going to leave me."

Find exceptions.

"Just last week I got a B on my project."

"In the past, we've sat down and talked it out after we had some time to calm down."

Discredit with proof.

"My friend just told me last week how helpful I was during their crisis and they think I'm a wonderful friend."

"My partner just told me yesterday how much they loved me and were happy to be with me."

Replace it with an alternative.

“I may have failed that test, but that test does not define me. I don't have to succeed all the time to not be a failure."

"We did have a fight, but we will talk it out and it doesn't mean they're going to leave me."
