"books aren't political"
except the clave outlawed helen and refused to rescue mark because of their faerie heritage even though they were shadowhunters too. except emma was told to accept the clave's explanation for her parents' deaths even though none of the evidence ever fit. except twelve-year-old julian was forced to give up his childhood and keep a secret from everyone he loved out of fear that his younger siblings would be taken away from him. except diana had to watch that struggle without being able to help out of fear of being persecuted by the clave for being trans. except ty was constantly ridiculed by other shadowhunters and warned against acting differently in front of the clave because he's autistic, and livvy was teased for defending him. except all the people kit cares about keep getting threatened, hurt, or killed because of his identity as the lost herondale and the descendant of the first heir. except dru is constantly looked down upon for having a different body type that shadowhunters "should" have. except tavvy was almost murdered for the sins of his ancestors that he had never known or had anything to do with.
books have always and will always be political. being an american, i'm clinging tightly to this idea right now, and the characters i love, these ones among others, that taught me to never stop standing up for what's right. in the words of consul alec lightwood, "i don't need to change. and neither do you [...] it's the world that needs to change, and we're going to be the ones to change it." 🤍

What can you do now that you're writing adult novels that you couldn't with YA?
And, the synopsis says "Can forbidden love bring down a kingdom?" Does it mean Lin and Conor?
Will we see the other mentioned princes and princesses?
It does mean Lin and Conor. Kel has romantic problems too but at the moment they're unlikely to bring down a kingdom. :) I didn't write the jacket copy but my assumption is — Conor has feelings for Lin, but there's nothing he can do to act on them. He can't marry someone who isn't royal and he really can't marry an Ashkar. He'd probably have to abdicate. And then what? He's the last Aurelian. Not to mention Lin can't marry him or even just have an affair with him either; she'd be exiled. We'll definitely get more into that in the next book.
There's more you can do with frank talk about sex and drugs in adult, no doubt. Though there isn't a sex scene per se in Sword Catcher, I couldn't put my YA characters into a lot of the situations the characters find themselves in in SC. And as for the sex scenes coming in the future, I wouldn't do that in YA either. I also think adult just leaves you more space for worldbuilding and history and complex politics. None of that is a negative about YA. YA offers opportunities to do things you wouldn't do in adult. It just depends what you're trying to do in a given book or series.

Conor: Do you think it was Destiney that brought us together?
Lin: No I’m pretty sure it was my grandfather. Why?

nothing truly breaks my heart like tigris at the end of tbosas. the way she looked at coriolanus, trying to find a glimpse , just a glance of the little boy she raised. the boy that she tried so hard to pull into the light. the boy she fought tooth and nail for. the boy she swore could be good.only to realize that he is gone . not only that but he turned into the thing she feared the most for him.his father
she looked at crassus’ coriolanus snow trying to find her coryo

I think too many people are hyper analyzing Snow’s relationship with Lucy Gray and trying to make a case for him (or indeed against him) in a moral sense and I’m going to say this:
((SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!))
Yes, Snow was not born evil. But he bought into the capitol propaganda against the districts and refused to entertain any sort of change in mindset despite meeting Sejanus, Bug and Smiley, and even Lucy and the rest of the Covey.
Snow may have “loved” Lucy, but it wasn’t as much as he craved wealth, power, and status. Status was the thing he was clinging to. He wanted to reinstate the Snow family as a force in the Capitol. He was clearly obsessed with Lucy (especially given all of his thoughts and feelings about Billy Taupe, no matter how warranted or not they may be) and he found her physically attractive.
Now - onto the comparisons of Katniss and Lucy Gray:
I don’t think Snow hated Katniss because he was butt-hurt about what went down with Lucy. Clearly, the reminders are everywhere; the Mockingjay, The Hanging Tree, District 12 itself, even the literal mention of Katniss root. But Katniss’s agency is not lesser or erased because of the connection we see between her and Lucy. If anything - especially because Lucy has been all but erased - it actually brings Katniss into a new sense of her own.
Snow fears and hates things he can’t control. That’s why he hated Sejanus. That’s why he, in the end, turned on Lucy Gray. She knew he betrayed Sejanus and he was going to kill her for it. He hated Katniss because, yes, while she reminded him of Lucy, she was a reminder that what can’t be controlled is dangerous and must be destroyed.
Coriolanus Snow, at his core, wanted power, status, and control more than he ever wanted love. He wanted it more than he cared about the nation and its children, even the Capitol’s children despite his own wartime experiences. He was an evil person who was given every opportunity to turn to friendship, to family, to love, and every single time decided against it.
Discuss!

Katniss literally was Lucy and Sejanus combined. No wonder Snow hated her so much. She was the reflection of two people closest to him.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that after the party for the sarathian princess, the only reason Conor was with Silla was because she has red hair and he was still thinking about Lin?

"Sometimes it's the smallest waves that knock you off your feet. ... They prove what the ocean is capable of, even when no one is paying attention."
The Chalice of the Gods, Rick Riordan
5 tiny waves that knocked me off my feet out of 5 🌊 Chalice of the Gods is a swift kick of nostalgia straight to the gut. It's Percy Jackson with all his sarcasm, heart and saltiness as he tries to survive his senior year of high school and get into New Rome University — a task that now includes obtaining three letters of recommendation from gods simply because he exists and wasn't supposed to.
It's a silly adventure with the original trio that packs a punch as Percy wrestles with fighting for a future not determined by the gods or some prophecy. It focuses more on Percy as a person rather than a hero — he never wanted to be a half-blood after all. This isn't life or death, it's about going after what you want and doing the right thing. It's about the little moments like family dinners and Grover cheering on Percy at his swim meets and Annabeth learning to bake and our favorite trio going out for smoothies at a slightly questionable establishment.
I found myself genuinely laughing so much while reading cotg and even shed a few tears. It's such a perfect addition to the Riordanverse, and I'm so excited that there's more to come.
But most of all, Chalice of the Gods felt like a thank you to long-time fans as a new era of Percy Jackson begins with the TV show. A nod to the past and an encouraging and comforting nudge to an exciting and (maybe a little bit) scary future of the unknown.
A new chapter is about to begin, but it doesn't take away all the adventures we've already read.
