Pondering Upon Matilda
“Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world” - Matilda
This line is from the famous movie “Matilda” which is about the story of a gifted child who has supernatural powers of telekinesis. As she go along her journey of learning, she encounters the challenges at home and at school. At home, her parents and her brother are treating her as if she’s not part of the family while at school, she has friends and a great teacher but at the same time, a bad principal who does not know how to handle children and their attitudes properly.
I can still remember the first time that I encountered this movie. It was way back 2013, during my first year in high school and I was one of the many participants of a leadership training seminar. This movie was the one we watched and I must say that from then on, I really liked this movie and its message to the viewers.
The story may be childish at first since it is made for children but when we think and look closer, we would be able to unfold its message to adults as well. It is a story that may only revolve around a young girl but it has a lot of lessons in it.
For me, one morale of the story is that we should always keep in mind that...
Everyone is born but not everyone is not born the same. We should always be open to the different kinds of people we encounter in our lives. As pre-service teachers, we should be like Miss Honey who was very open minded with the variety of students that she has especially Matilda who has special powers. We should be wise and capable enough in handling situations wherein extraordinary things happen.
Teaching in a school that has a toxic and negative culture is very challenging and hard. Teacher leadership is definitely needed during these trying times. An ordinary and practical teacher would just leave the school if he or she was in Miss Honey’s place frankly because of the unusual and negative culture that that school has but we should look up into Miss Honey’s bravery and courage to stay in order to provide the children a good quality of education despite the toxic culture that the administration of Miss Trunchbull has.
As a teacher in the making, I am seeing myself in the character of Miss Honey. I am willing to sacrifice my life just to dedicate myself to the field that I chose. Being a teacher is the path that I decided to take and I must instill in my mind that along my journey of teaching, there will be ups and downs and all I have to do is remind myself of my purpose.
They say, there is no money in teaching and that I will not be rich in this field. But guess what, for me, money is nothing compared to the happiness and wisdom that I will impart to my students.
