Corn-Cockle!

or Corncockle!

The corn-cockle is a herbaceous annually flowering plant who's stem can grow up to 100 centimeters (39 inches) long! And the flowers are up to a 5 centimeter (2 inch) diameter, and usually ranging from 2.5-5 centimeters. They have lanceolate (the shape- pointy lance shaped) leaves. They have sepals with 5 teeth and 10 stamens. Corncockles are covered in fine hairs! They flower annually in the summer- usually in May to September in the northern hemisphere, November to March in the southern hemisphere. They like full sun, and don't mind silk or sandy soil.

In the 19th century they were common weeds in European wheat fields, where they are indigenous, and the corncockle seeds were probably mixed in with the wheat and resown. They are invasively in the United states, New Zealand, parts of Canada, and parts of Austrialia, probably spread there through European wheat. Because of new farming practices- autumn planting when the flowers aren't seeding and better washing of the grain- the flowers have been dramatically reduced in Europe- so much that they were thought to have been extirpated until some was found in Sunderland in 2014.

They are poisonous! The whole thing. To livestock, birds, and homosapians. Despite this they have been used as medicine for a good deal of things- including cancer, high cholesterol, and an antiviral.

Soft shell clam!

These clams like to live in tidal flats, buried. They are commonly found in muddy areas but they like a combination of mud and sand. Lots of people eat them. They are invasive in the pacific coast of north america, but they originated in the pacific ocean during the Miocene (A geological epoch). They extended to the Atlantic and European waters during the Pliocene (The next epoch). During the Pleistocene soft shell clams were extirpated in the Pacific and European waters. Then due to people they were spread. 

They are called soft shell clams because of their calcium carbonate shell that is thin and easily broken. They are roughly 3-8 inches long. They have a pair of siphons that they stick up to the surface, drink in water, filter out food, and then expel it. During low tide you can see holes in the mud made by the clams' siphons. If you happen to be looking for clams sometimes they shoot out water when you press on the mud, which can make them easier to find. 

Soft shell clams are eaten by various things depending on where they live. The clams are eaten by humans and gulls everywhere they can be found, sea otters in the eastern pacific ocean, northern moon snails and green crabs(who are invasive) in New england. Gulls eat them by pulling them out of the sand, flying up roughly 15-20 feet then drop them on hard surfaces so the soft shell breaks, then the Gulls eat the freshly exposed inside. 

A helpful time scale (or at least it was for me)!; 

had a dream that there was this new tiktok trend called "scrubbing" where people would take images of fictional characters and put them in images of bathtubs and drag around transparent pngs of soap and brushes with their tiktok art tablets and like liquify tool their hair down to mimic giving them a shower. and people would get into flamewars in the comments of every single video over the types of soap they picked and if the images had decently removed backgrounds and if they got soap in their eyes. and it got onto the news because it turned out everyone doing the trend was doing it compulsively like they physically couldn't stop and each video was a solid few minutes long because they were just collectively obsessively recording themselves fake-showering these fictional characters and arguing about it online

Culicoides Sonoransis midge! Or more commonly, Biting midge!

There are over 4,000 species of biting midges in the Ceratopogonidae family. 1,000 of them are in the genus culicoides.

Biting midges are tiny flies, usually about 1-3 millimeters. This is small enough that they can be hard to see, giving them their nickname, no-see-ums, but if you can see them they are typically greyish, unless they are full of blood, then they will appear red. The kind that feed on human people have a dark gray pattern on their wings. Their bites cause itchy lumps and sometimes blisters. They hate the smells of citronella, eucalyptus, and garlic. Biting midges like manure, like is found on pig, sheep, or cow farms.

They can transmit several viruses, the most significant for the biting midges is bluetongue virus, which causes bluetongue disease in cattle, sheep, deer, and other ruminants (a ruminant is an even toed ungulate mammal that chews cud regurgitated from its ruman.) We don’t know yet how culicoides sonorensis are able to maintain transmission of bluetongue virus to cattle in temperate regions where individual midges don’t survive the winter, or are at least unlikely to.

the thing about adulthood is when someone says something extremely rude to you, you can either turn the other cheek or calmly & firmly correct them. Valencia Toothcarp!

A species of freshwater fish endemic to Southern Catalonia and the Valencian community, Spain (eastern coast of Spain -ish). The Valencia Toothcarp has been near France, but it’s been extirpated (local extinction) from there. They like marshes, freshwater springs, coastal freshwater lagoons, and acequias! Adult males are on average 4-8cm and adult females are usually slightly larger.

They are classified as vulnerable species by the Spanish government and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). This is mostly due to land reclamation, the process of turning water bodies into land, destroying the Valencia Toothcarps’ habitat. The land reclamation was popular in Valencia in the 80’s due to tourism, tourism which also caused an increase in pollution and an increase in the introduction of invasive species, both of which further damaged the fish’s habitat. The Valencian regional government has made efforts to help these fish though, like conservation and reintroduction!
