Hellyna is one of THE most interesting characters on american television right now so it is very annoying to see her reduced to just being half of a ship (both by the people who ship it and the people who anti the ship for some reason) or have people vehemently hate one entire essential half of her personality bc she’s too evil for the morality police type of fans to allow themselves to like
She’s literally the epitome of the “people say they want complex female characters but can’t even handle ___” meme, like what do you MEAN the most anti-Lumon rebellious worker on the severed floor is THEEEE heiress to the Eagan empire so when devoid of context every aspect of her that rebels is born of her privilege and entitlement?? She hates herself (mutually) bc both halves of her have what the other wants??? Hello are we seeing this !!!
And I am very tired of people treating Helly R and Helena as two separate individual entities when the entire point of this goddamn show is that innies and outies are NOT completely different people!! It isn’t surprising that Helly is a popular likable character when viewed as a separate entity from Helena, but the most interesting thing about both of them is that THEY ARE THE SAME! Helly is great but she’d be infinitely less complex and compelling if she wasn’t also the literal spawn of satan like how r u not getting this

unbelievably emotional over helena wearing a yellow dress to cheer helly up. helly loves so deeply and earnestly and wears her heart on her sleeve. helena has the same love inside of her but she has nowhere to put it. she holds it tight like a secret. its bleeding out of her.

Severance is a cool show. Because, like. What if you knew nothing. No context. No idea who you are. No history. And, of course, you are scared, but you can’t leave unless you get permission from someone— the person who put you here— someone who will never listen. Someone who makes all the decisions, who says “I’m a grown-up person and you’re not.” And you’re naive and lonely, but at least there’s other people in the same boat as you. Someone, just been there slightly longer, is trying to shield you, trying to protect you, taking responsibility and taking on punishment they “can handle and grow from.”
Like. Oh yeah. I recognize this one. Someone else dresses you. Someone else feeds you. Someone else, who's just like you, but they get everything. The little toys and the waffle party. Helly is desperate and suicidal, but she still has to go to school work. You have to do work that doesn't make sense, but you'll understand eventually. The meaningless, manufactured rivalry between departments. The rumors??? “they have larvae that eat them?” “I’m livestock grown for food” “I’m a bodybuilder who has loads of girlfriends, but you don’t know them they go to a different school?” Punishment in the form of apologizing over and over, having to use all the right words, until you are believed. Endless hallways. Scary authority figures. "Are you mad at me?" Religion being the only type of media you see, until you read some shitty book that changes your life. Confusing, sudden camping trips that are supposed to fix you. Condescension. The words "innie" and "outie" are brought up multiple times as infantilizing. Of course his innie's voice is higher pitched????

Helly and Helena being different facets of one character makes everything more interesting. It adds depth and texture to every scene, interaction, relationship, and choice. It complicates motives and heightens emotions. If Helly and Helena are one person, then when Helly runs out of the elevator and kisses Mark at the end of s1, it isn't just something Helly wants to do, deep down it is something Helena wants to do, too. When Helena flirts with Mark and looks at him like she's in love at the ORTBO, it's because part of her genuinely is in love with him. When she tries to escape Lumon, tells Jame he's weird, says she is ashamed of who she is on the outside, makes Irv a snow seal, helps Mark look for his wife, mocks the book of Kier, tells her(self) that she is not a person, rejects authority, tries to take her own life, all of this ALL OF THIS comes from within one person. And that person is Helena "Helly" Eagan. Helly and Helena cannot exist without each other, they are each other, and their forced separation is unnatural and unsustainable. No, Helly should not get control of the body. No, Helena should not sacrifice herself. No, Helly is not kind. No, Helena is not cruel. It's not that simple. People contain multitudes. They have multiple faces and desires which they sometimes hide from the world, or even hide from their own conscious awareness. This is not and never was a battle between two people; Helena is one woman, and she is at war with herself.

Just. The implications of Lumon using child labor, Lumon sending 15 year old Ms Huang to another country away from her parents with her childhood bed, Cobel being kept from her mother when she was at school, still wearing her childhood braids as an adult and having Kier and Imogene dolls on a twin bed, Jame liking the version of his daughter that’s only one month old better than his 30 year old daughter. Imogene being hinted at being a child when Kier chose her from the factory. Children being an easily manipulated and controlled marginalized group.. Reghabi saying to Mark Scout that Mark S is essentially his child. Helena still living with her father and still being very much under his control. Lumon trying to trap their adult members in childhood
