Rationale of the Final Work
According to Greek mythology, Koronis was a princess of the Thessalian kingdom of Phlegyantis. She was once the lover of Apollo, the Greek god of the sun and music, amongst other things. Their son, Asclepius, mostly recognised by his staff with a snake coiling around it, is the god of medicine, much like his father.
It is said that while she was pregnant with Apollo’s child, she had an affair with the Ischys. Fearing this would happen, Apollo had sent a crow to keep watch over her, who then flew to Apollo and spoke to him about what had happened. Enraged, Apollo turned the crow’s feathers black (crows were white at the time) As the story goes, Apollo then tells his sister Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, to slay Koronis for her unfaithfulness to him.
While she lays dying, Apollo saves the child, Asclepius, and rests Coronis among the stars as “Corvus”, the crow. Asclepius, who then sets off to study under the care of the centaur Chiron, becomes the god of medicine and healing.
My heterotopia is centered around this Greek myth. I was intrigued by the story of Koronis, and the connection she had to Asclepius. Since my original idea for the relic was revolving around the use of a crow, I thought this could be an interesting idea to explore.
Thus, the Greek garden in the inner world is a space built by a descendent of Asclepius, to honor their father and grandmother. Leading to the inner world is an abandoned warehouse, where we see hints at what lies in the inner world, such as the graffiti and the golden snake on the handle of the door.
The graffiti in the outerworld, on the walls of the warehouse, is subtle foreshadowing to the myth that the environment is inspired by. When animating the space, I didn’t want the camera to focus too much on these details, as it would most likely give away the surprise of what lies ahead. However, I still added clear symbols and words, such as the bright red graffiti on the walls that say “Koronis” and on the opposite side “Asclepius”, with his staff next to it, and the illustration of a woman with a crow at the bottom.
I also added missing person’s posters and other pieces of paper to signify that the space had been vandalized and used to a certain extent, before being abandoned. The cracks and holes in the door and the ceiling allowed light rays to come in and make the space look more eerie.
The original idea of having the door open and for the other side of it to be seen as pristine and in good condition, was taken away because I thought that it would connect the two worlds a little too much, as the point of the assignment was to create an inner world that was entirely different from what the outer world was.
The inner world was created meticulously with a lot of planning and research regarding Greek architecture and design. Especially for the pillars, the Tholos and the podium, I tried to stay very accurate to Greek designs, while also adding my personal touch to it. For the design of the crows mounted on the pillars, I went for a less organic shape, as I thought it fit best with the design overall.
I really enjoyed modeling Asclepius’s staff, although it was incredibly difficult.
I wanted the crow relic to be made out of glass, which is neither white nor black, signifying the change that happened to its feathers in the myths.
Two things that weren’t originally in the concept art were the pitcher and the plate of gold, as well as the pond under the podium. The latter was added because I thought it would be interesting visually, and the former was added to symbolize the olden day belief that crows and ravens are attracted to shimmering objects. It also symbolizes Koronis’s time as a princess, before her tragic fate.
The sound design helped emphasize the difference of the two worlds; the first world having an eerie melody, where you expect the inner world to mirror it in some way, but the melody fades into something more cheerful. The contrast between the dark interior of the first world and the bright open outdoor space of the second world helped highlight this point as well.
In terms of modeling, my only wish is that I would have spent more time modeling that tree, because right now it looks quite out of place. I also wish I added a less clear sky, just to detail the space a bit more. The shrine too could have had some more details and objects on top; I’m glad that I added the pitcher and the plate at least. Maybe some flower petals would have been an interesting touch. I also wish I could have modeled some Greek statues here and there, but I fear that would have been too ambitious considering my level of skill.

I wanted to add a magical blur filter on the video when the relic starts floating.
Tumblr media
But the fade was too abrupt so I'm fixing it.
;-;
Maybe widening it will help.

Editing the audio:
The first part is a bit ugly so I might add music to cover up the weird sounds of the door opening as well.
I think I'll use this.

Music
For the garden, I'm thinking of going for either the music in this video,
youtube
or this one
youtube
And adding birds chirping in the background.
For the first world, I'm going to go with my own recorded sounds without music.
And from Semini's garden:
