vibration   rips   through   his   body,   starting   at   the   base   of   his   spine   and   then   rippling   upwards   and   out.      it   was   tugging   him   towards   something.      not   tragedy,   of   that   jay   was   sure.   it   was   something   else.      something   older.      it   didn't   flicker,   didn't   cry   out.      it   just   waited.   he   hadn't   meant   to   follow   it.      but   his   body   moved   before   his   mind   did,   drawn   by   a   vibration   too   steady   to   be   disaster,   too   heavy   to   be   human.      the   kind   that   lived   under   mountains.      the   kind   meant   to   sleep.         

he   knelt   without   realizing.      the   chamber   below   was   stone.   cold.   sacred   in   the   way   forgotten   places   are   sacred.      not   because   people   had   made   them   holy,   but   because   time   had.      the   hum   vibrated   differently   here.      less   frantic,   deeper.      like   it   had   finally   found   something   it   couldn't   rattle.      only   wake.      then   came   the   sound.   a   cough.   a   shifting   form.      then   a   voice.      it   cracks   the   stillness.      ancient,   broken,   alive.   

jay's   voice   catches   in   his   chest.      blinking   slowly,   like   the   light   was   too   much.      crimson   flickers   'round   the   edges   of   irises,      a   sign   of   nerves.      he   wasn't   sure   if   he   was   supposed   to   be   here.

the humming is what rouses him. he feels it before he is aware that he feels it; he does not dream in this state, but the humming comes to him even in unconsciousness ( which is still not quite the word, is it? death is closer than anything ). it grows and grows, drawing him from that false-death. he coughs, shifts his head to the side; he is lying against cold stone, and his torso feels as though a long line of fire has raked across it. recalling who had been at his side, he croaks, " thalion?
