the point isn't that all these songs are made retroactively invalid by the end of the relationship, the point is that some of them were inherently looking at the relationship where it was and pretending that it was already everything, that it didn't have to grow and put down roots. Renegade asks if the thing preventing the bargain from going through is anxiety or lack of interest. but those flaws weren’t secretly present in every song! invisible string is still a song about accepting everything that brought you to where you are! Daylight still gets to the heart of true love, willingly desiring to forsake all else, forever, for the beloved! Paper Rings offers what sounds like a bargain “I’d give up the shiny things I like to get a simple paper ring”—but is in fact saying “the only thing that matters to me is that I get to give myself to you, everything else is secondary”. these ways of expressing love are still true because they’ve always been true.
