I find it interesting that Ren is the only character referred to by his last name. At first it’s easy to assume this is because he’s a very Japanese/Asian inspired character, but so is Yatsuhashi and he’s never referred to by his last name. (Outside of circumstances where it would be normal for any character.)

Even Nora, who is the closest person to him and is the least formal person you’ll ever meet, only ever refers to him as Ren.

The only time we ever hear his first name is when someone says his full name or from his parents in a flashback.

This leads me to believe it’s not a cultural thing but instead a personal choice. He has a personal reason he prefers to be called by his family name.

I would imagine it’s either a). trauma: the last people who called him by his first name died in front of him, or more likely b). It’s a way of honoring his parents and family. A sort of they live on through me sort of thing.
