Kirishima & Bakugo’s Influence on him (1k words)

Widely discussed is how the friendship between Kirishima and Bakugo has helped Bakugo grow as an individual, but lesser spoken of is what Kirishima gains from it. There is undeniable value in Bakugo forming relationships with his Yuuei classmates that are not complicated by the unraveling of a complex web of misunderstandings that have accumulated over the years like he does with Midoriya. The culmination of Bakugo’s character growth in the latest chapter showcased his true potential and the positive influence he is capable of having on all his peers. Kirishima and Bakugo impact each other in a way that promotes mutual growth.

Disclaimer: This is a Kirishima rp blog so the post is ultimately Kirishima-centric, but in no way should this be taken to trivialize his relationship with others! In fact, Kaminari’s closeness with Bakugo deserves more attention drawn to it. (Kirishima is not the only one Bakugo has allowed to bail him out of trouble!! His reliance on Kaminari during the Licensing Exam arc is more than significant.)

In order to analyze how Kirishima benefits from their friendship, Bakugo’s natural-born leadership skills must first be examined. Many people throughout the series are innately drawn to Bakugo. It is no coincidence that out of all Yuuei’s students, he is the one targeted by the league of villains. Midoriya is all but entranced by him from early childhood and by middle school, Bakugo has amassed a troupe of lackeys that have taken to following him around. He possesses a certain charisma that people are attracted to despite the shortcomings resulting from his inflated ego. He leads by instinct, but that alone is not enough to make him a good leader.

Even All Might cannot leave Bakugo alone which is remarkable considering how he has treated his successor over the years. Aizawa too recognizes something special in Bakugo that is shared by Midoriya. They are forces of nature in their own right that stir the surroundings they’re placed into and have strong spirits that collide with anyone they come into contact with for better or worse. This much is apparent to anyone that witnesses them in action.

Other characters tend to misinterpret Bakugo’s actions because they take him at face value and simply do not understand his process. But this is understandable because the pace at which Bakugo continues to grow from his experiences is staggering. Attending Yuuei has humbled him countless times. Trust is forged over time as he is forced to acknowledge the strength of others and even cooperate with them at times.

Here’s the thing: Tokage's assessment isn’t actually faulty— her line of thinking fits if applied to Bakugo during the Sports Festival. Bakugo relies on his teammates without actually relying on them. To put it bluntly, he’s using them to achieve his goals because he cannot complete this task alone. It is a compromise. But this, as most things are with Bakugo, is a step forward in the right direction: the acceptance that there are limitations to what Bakugo can do alone. 

It’s hardly Tokage’s fault that she was not in a position to witness the strides Bakugo has made the way 1-A has. She can’t know him as a person the same way those that have faced adversity with him. Her plan does not account for the trust he has developed in them to follow through where he is lacking. Bakugo leads the vanguard fearlessly with the knowledge that he is covered by competent allies.

Although change like this does not happen overnight. Relying on others to watch one’s back requires a vulnerability that has taken growing into. The infamous “It has to be you” scene at Kamino Ward where Bakugo allows himself to be rescued is a major turning point. It is a group effort even though Kirishima’s involvement is vital. And it doesn’t stop there. The Provisional Hero Licensing Exam is the first time Bakugo is willingly relying on someone in combat. There is a world’s difference between how he reluctantly works together with Midoriya against All Might at the end of the first term.

Not only does Bakugo hold back (something that defies his very nature) to avoid causing harm to Kirishima and Kaminari, he has confidence in Kaminari to bail him out later. This is the same Bakugo that perceives most forms of assistance a personal attack to his competence. And it shows that he’s new to all this. Although it’s reasonable to assume his choice of words after being freed from Seiji’s quirk are not noteworthy, coupled with the accompanying art they convey a sense of urgency that fits with his character and overall discomfort with accepting help. What’s important is that he has reached a level of comfort with Kaminari that lets him. Kaminari has been building a friendship with Bakugo that is on par with Kirishima. Afterall, Horikoshi has labeled both Kaminari and Kirishima as the social ligaments connecting their class.

How does this relate to Kirishima personally? Well, for a person that struggles with self-esteem as Kirishima does, having the confidence of someone he admires as much as Bakugo is incomparable. Winning the hard-earned trust of him is a feat in itself. Bakugo Katsuki does not spout pointless falsehoods nor does he coddle. The brand of leadership he has developed is one that acknowledges the strength of his companions as equals.

Bakugo leads by example and Kirishima is inspired by Bakugo’s drive like most of the cast. In Kirishima’s case, it strongly resonates with the struggles of his past self. He watches how Bakugo throws himself into all that he does without hesitation in the very way he wishes to. Kirishima’s greatest hurdle is embracing his strengths for what they are. He fears that he is inferior to his peers while Bakugo previously believed himself above everyone. However, Bakugo comes to learn through nurturing various friendships that there is no shame in recognizing others as his equals. Kirishima and Bakugo as equals sets a healthy precedent for how they view themselves in relation to the people around them.

her sentiments are not unheard of nor are they uncommon among yuuei’s diverse population. the school to its credit at least attempts to provide essential toiletries to students occupying the dorms, but there are many (himself included) with preferences that basic name brand products simply cannot satisfy and it would appear emi is among them. " can’t really blame ya. ” a nod to indicate understanding while he considers his own reserve, deciding it couldn’t hurt to stock up on supplies as well. the generous offer is well-received— kirishima already on his feet in a matter of seconds to shoot an appreciative grin in her direction. “ sounds good to me! tis the season and all. how do you take it? topped with whipped cream is a must, right? ”

❝Hey Kirishima, wait a sec—❞ the exciteable redhead seemed to call out as he got out of class, jogging over to the other hero course student with a smile. ❝Happy Halloween! I got you something.❞ From his bag, Koboyashi produced a candy bar- one of full length instead of the usual halloween fun sized ones. ❝I didn't know exactly what you liked, so I hope this is good.❞

lively are yuuei’s students filtering out of several classrooms once the final bells rings to announce that time is their own and kirishima more so than most with schoolbag slung over his shoulder, already anticipating how best to kick off the festivities back at the dorms. however, attention is momentarily diverted once he recognizes himself being addressed.

“ sure, what’s up? ” feet halt mid-stride, gaze settling on newfound company. kirishima, model audience that he is, watches koboyashi reveal the candy from his bag of goodies with the same mystified expression one would when a magician performs.  “ for real? for me? sweeet! hey, make sure you save some for yourself too, alright? thanks, koboyashi! ”

" Happy birthday , Kirishima - kun ! I have something for you ." Hands revealed a present that hid behind back , inside of it a crimson T - shirt with the word 'Manly' written at it's upper part . The freckled never knew a sense of fashion , however , assumption could confirm that might even he find it likable .

a smile begets a smile or so it goes, but the reassuring, gentle curve of midoriya’s possesses power all its own that even he has yet to recognize and kirishima feels himself reciprocating on instinct. he commits these moments to memory as best he can— scenes to be replayed, watched timeafter with the same wide-eyed wonder in present.

“ thanks, midoriya! ” simple words considering the depth of his gratitude and he hopes they manage to convey just how appreciative he is. patience is a virtue that he has grown into though in the moment excitement cannot be concealed, evidenced by the hands twitching eagerly at his sides. he makes quick work of the colorful paper surrounding the gift once it is exchanged between them. the garment is a striking red ( his favorite color ) and cheeks burn warm as fabric is clutched between kirishima’s hands fondly. “ i love it, heh, you know me so well! ”

Hero Analysis Notes: Kirishima Eijirou

Kirishima-kun’s birthday is on the 16th of October! It seems like Kirishima-kun, ever seeking manliness, was eating plenty of his favorite meat!

“happy birthday, kirishima!!” he didn’t know what to get him, but eventually settled for a jacket which held an uncanny resemblance to his own and piece of cake, from his birthday cake. “you should come play video games with me this afternoon, i’ll even let you be first player!”

there exists a saying that the best things in life come in pairs of two, but all kirishima knows are days of chasing schoolyard bullies as a solo act. yuuei has taught him the value of a kindred spirit— in competition with a rival who could very well be the physical manifestation of insecurities past (who not only possesses a similar quirk but shares a birthday as well) and the blessing that is a friend who pushes kirishima beyond what he ever thought himself capable of.

the day is not his alone, but he doesn’t mind in the slightest. when tetsutetsu grins at him like that, honest and warm, any exasperation over their endless similarities no longer seems important.

“ tetsuuu!!! you too, happy birthday, man!! ” kirishima takes a moment to process that the gifts in hand are intended for him. gratitude washes over him in the form of misty eyes and a smile that emerges between several sniffles. it’s an offer he’d accept before even asked; as if there’s any better way to spend the day than wolfing down cake while gaming with one of his best pals. “ you’re such a good friend, y’know. it’s your day and you’re still thinkin’ of me. hey, you pick the games then! whatever you want, birthday boy. ”

the white noise of television filling the otherwise quiet space is a poor substitute for verbal companionship, let alone enough to hold kirishima’s attention in full. naturally he abandons the remote without a second thought when far more engaging prospect arises. “ i’m game. ‘s always more fun with a friend. ” questioning tilt of his head exposes curiosity. “ whatcha in the market for? ���

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KIRISHIMA! Your present is my wonderful presence." He doesn't even knock, the door is just busted open. No choice Denki is in there, "Kidding, as much as I know my existence is a blessing I did actually get you something. Here you go." With that he produces a box from behind him, not that he did a very good job hiding it in the first place.

the first lesson of the living arrangement at the dormitory is that privacy doesn’t exist. closed doors do very little if anything at all to stave off companions and he wouldn’t have it any other way. kirishima’s room is fair game, open to all regardless of hour. kaminari just happens to be exercising this privilege.

“ do you have any idea what time it is, man? ” he teases. they both know an answer is not necessary. there have never been schedules designating when students are required to be in bed, but it’s objectively past when any decent person would choose to make a racket. evidently, kirishima is equally remiss in moderating his volume because laughter echoes off the walls loud enough that he makes a mental note to apologize to shouji later.

though uttered in joking manner, there is no contesting that kaminari’s company is a gift in itself. hitting it off early on along with sero, they had grown inseparable, comfort spaces bleeding into each other openly, boundaries blurring indistinguishable lines that they haven’t looked back from since. as far as kirishima is concerned, he’s received plenty already. “ you didn’t have to get me anything! ” and he truly means it even if enthusiastic hands reaching for the package suggest otherwise.

Kaminari jumps on Kirishima, laughing before he hugs the other boy tightly. "IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY! YOU'RE THE BEST!" he shouts excitedly. "I got you a new Red Riot hoodie, check it out!" He reveals the hoodie, tossing it to the other boy.

the collision knocks breath and laughter alike out of kirishima as he registers one kaminari denki practically pouncing on him without warning. fortunately the two do not topple over to the floor thanks to sturdiness being one of few his strong suits. routine has conditioned him to return all hugs, arms squeezing the other’s frame in turn before releasing it only to lean against him to bask in sunshine praises. the best, that’s a new one. humility has always cloaked him in a complacent veil. averageness was his legacy through and through, but the glimmer in kaminari’s eyes dares him to think otherwise— that in some not too distant future he wants to still be proudly standing shoulder to shoulder as pros.

“ i can’t be the best because you already are! ” he parries back. incoming hoodie is caught with ease, settling into his hands as he thumbs over the material. excitement manifests in quivering lips that could not suppress the grin that forms even if his life depended on it. “ bro, how’d you even get something like this? brooooo, this is legit undeniable proof that are you, in fact, the best. no contest. don’t even try to deny it. i- wow. this is only the coolest gift ever. thanks, man. ”

hibird flutters onto kirishima’s shoulder!! there’s a daffodil clasped in her beak, stem adorned with a red ribbon, that she neatly tucks behind his ear— “happy birthday, happy birthday~ kirishima! kirishima!” and just like that, the fluffy messenger flies away. ♡♡

pleasant chirps announce the arrival of hibari’s messenger, a small thing that hops up on his shoulder without hesitation. he’s careful when craning his neck to peek at the little fellow that apparently bears gifts in hand (or well, in beak, really). 

“ uwaaaah, hibari-san too?! this is for me? ” he muses aloud to no one in particular, reaching to pat the flower as if confirming its existence for true. “ t-thank you!! ” is stammered quickly towards hibird’s retreating figure. it’s a shame to see him leave so soon and kirishima wonders if hibird is eager to return to its master. nonetheless, it’s a sweet gesture all in all. he’ll be certain to thank hibari personally next time they cross paths.

“kirishima, yo!” a chummy arm slings over the man of the hour, drawing him in by the shoulder, “happy birthday! it’s today, right? haha! if you don’t have any plans after practice, let’s go to the arcade—on me!” ♡♡

“ you remembered! ” his intonation indicates surprise as much as gratitude and he hopes that no misunderstandings are born from it. the weight on his shoulder is nothing compared to the warmth that flutters in his stomach at the greeting, tugging at heartstrings that have always been vulnerable to the gentle pull of kind words. 

“ bro, even if i were busy, i’d make time for ya. wouldn’t miss it for the world!, ” he grins. “ hey, i can feel that this is the year that i’m gonna grow taller than ya! ”
