I really want to get back into displaying great tanks, but I don’t even have an estimated date when things will start to normalize. I appreciate each and every one of you being super duper patient. I hope the setups that are here have given you some inspiration!

Leon the Ridley’s Cave racers set up.

Leon really likes sitting in his hammocks (that’s an old baby photo of him though. aw) and makes plenty of use of his branches.  He has two moist moss hides and two dry hides. The large water bowl keeps the humidity up but I keep the orchid bark substrate dry to avoid the chance of any mould developing.

His lamp is a 2%UVB 10%UVA compact bulb. Being a cave dwelling animal I didn’t want to over illuminate the tank and this thing does the job nicely. Leon regularly chooses to bask under the bulb instead of hiding away on the heat mat.

Snake set ups part 1

Iv’e seen a few posts of snake rooms, racks and set ups recently so I thought I’d do one myself. I like Plastic tubs because they are easy to clean and hold humidity well but (from what I’ve seen on forums ect.) I think there’s a tendency to make them pretty boring….(eg. warm end hide box, cold end hide box, water bowl and paper bedding… that’s it.) So I’ve tried to make my tubs a bit more “enriched”. 

GLaDOS the Leucistic Black Ratsnake lives in the tub shown in the top 3 pics (Left hand side tub seen in the bottom picture). She spends most of her time on the platform or under her companion cube but is very active and uses every inch of the space and height available to her.

Levi the Russian Rat snake Lives in the next tub. He loves his shower shelf which was an excellent idea I nicked from alltailnolegs. Levi is not shy at all and would much rather stretch out under his UV tube than hide away. (I noticed both snakes got more active after they had UV provided.)

I Have switched the little Leucistic Black rat onto aspen. 

I much prefer the look of orchid bark but this girl is seriously into her digging and it was just too rough on her little snoot (you can see from the grumpy picture of her where she has rubbed her nose a bit).

At the end of the day the enclosure is for her to live in not for me to look at!

An outdoor turtle pen was requested, and this is definitely one of the ones I instantly thought of. I know I've reblogged it before, but it's extremely helpful!

Habitat Guidelines: Outdoor Pens for Box Turtles

pen must be predator-proof as appropriate to your area (dog, raccoon, fox, skunk, coyote, etc.)

fencing must be opaque, at least 12” high, and buried at least 4” in substrate

in Colorado, nighttime low temperatures should be at least 45F by May 15th and turtles should be able to live outdoors for at least 5 months of the year

minimum size for one or two turtles/small tortoises: 36 sq. ft.; Three: 50 sq. ft.

recessed water dish accessible from all sides for entry and exit

artificial or natural hides (one for each turtle plus one additional)

brush pile for burrowing

live vegetation

CoRHS recommendations: Spiderwort(Tradescantia ssp. ), strawberry, squash, sunflower, dandelion, globe mallow, bindweed, grasses

Actually, for a ball python, the second one is better. They’re terrestrial snakes and really don’t want a lot of floor space. Snakes as a whole aren’t roaming animals. They like to find a nice hole to hide in and they move...

I Like your blog but what really kills me is that I see all these beautiful naturalistic tanks and here I am using AstroTurf for my gecko and a bare tank with rocks for my turtle and also do you have any sort of instructions or ideas for an outdoor aquatic turtle exhibit

Don't feel bad. This blog simply for inspiration and to set a good example! All of my kids are on paper towel and have basic decor, so trust me. I sometimes look at these and dream of what I could, and will hopefully soon have. 

Turtles are still a whole new ball game for me, but I'm learning quickly! First off it's important to know whether or not your location is viable for keeping a turtle outside. I know several people do, so followers please don't hesitate to chime in if you know anything! In the meantime I'll happily fetch some great DIYs and resources to help!
