Just got done reading Shatterpoint. Tbh Horn's subplot was the only one i was actually invested in. Her entire story from Chapter 9 through 10 was so badass. Look at this highlight right here.

Anyways I really like how Horn's subplot was her and her fellow Victorians struggling to survive and scrape by while her country has been overtaken by a foreign power while it's own military has been rendered defunct. And it's very clear that during Chapter 10, Horn is clearly shaken up from what happened in County Hillock. She's just been betrayed by her superior officer who treats it's own soldiers like faceless pawns while seeing it's citizens (particularly the native Tarans) like trash; placing the interests of his country over it's people.

Horn then foils Hamilton as she views her fellow Victorian soldiers like other humans, wanting their names and their stories to be remembered after their deaths. Understandably, she lashes out at Hamilton and Manfred for both using Victoria's military weapons and positions in power to trample the lives of its civilians like ants.

In a way, Horn reminds me of Patriot: a high ranking soldier of their country who went against the expectations and views set by their superiors for being morally wrong, only to soon form their own squadron. Horn's newly formed tempest platoon of rescued victorian soldiers may not be as "hard as iron" as the Geurilla Shieldguards, but it's clear Horn views them with sheer respect, almost as if they are family. At the end, both of them fight in a city overtaken by foreign powers (Reunion/Sarkaz controlled Chernobog, Kazdel controlled Londinium) with rescue and survival being their strongest priority.
