Two-Sided City
I chose to put these a photo of criss-cross caution tape along side with a photo of metal construction poles together because of the interesting lines that were portrayed in both images because I thought I could easily unify them because of the lines. The relationship between the two to me signifies the two sides to the city of Chicago, on the one hand, you have new shiny construction that signifies wealth and modernity and the other you have gloomy exposed brick and old paint with caution tape as the subject which signifies the neglected areas of the city. In order to make the two photos more cohesive and blend as one, I copied the pole from the image on the rights and put it between the two images to make it a dividing line. Lastly, I added some filters and lightened the photo to give them the same color tone and mood.

The image of a rusty door covered in broken glass prior to any editing is on the left while the same image after filters and an overlay is seen on the right. An overlay is layered on image on top of another and making it almost see through by erasing or decreasing the opacity in order to create an interesting effect on the photo underneath. In this image I took an image of a sculpture I saw downtown and lowers the opacity so mainly the lines of the sculpture were visible and had that on top of the original photo of the door. I then added detail extractor as well as high key which are two filters. In order, to create a more eerie and scary mood to the overall image. The second image on the right is successful because of the intensified detail as well as the attention that is drawn to it from the lines coming from overlay which in turn creates a more intensified mood.

The original photo of a bike with a missing tire that was propped up against a street sign prior to any editing is on the left and the same photo is seen on the right as the final image. I added a black and white filter to the image in order to create a more gloomy and vintage mood to the photo compared to the original. The second image has a more gloomy and vintage tone than the original image on the left.

This is a portrait  of a woman in a traditional African head wrap and red lipstick. I added multiple filters to this portrait in order to enhance the subject. The filters enhanced the details and the shadows as well as the freckles on the subjects face. The focus of the image is the bright colors. I feel like the editing on this image was successful because it enhanced many of the elements of the photo that had been diminished due to being shot in poor lighting.

This photo originally was a portrait of a woman with a traditional African head wrap and red lipstick seen above however it was heavily manipulated in order to create this abstract effect. In order to create this photo I manipulated a portrait of a woman to create an abstract effect. It took multiple attempts in order to create the abstract effect on a portrait however, I finally feel like I was successful. This photo is successful as an abstract photo because the subject is not easily identifiable and the focus of the photo is the lines rather than a subject I was able to create this effect by using the liquefy tool. This photo is creative because of the way I manipulated the original image into something completely different and interesting looking.

The original image was a portrait of a woman smiling with red lipstick and a traditional head wrap which can be seen on the right. The effect after being manipulated can be seen on the left which is the original image cut up into smaller sections and a high key filter applied to some areas. I chose this photo because I thought a grid would be more interesting when done with a portrait. I made the grid by using diving sections of the subjects face and making them larger or smaller based on what I liked better. I then decided to section some pieces in the middle and add a filter on some sections of all the middle fragments. I did this because I was trying to make the image more interesting and comment on the beauty standards that many African american women and men face by not fitting the‘ideal’ image of beauty in the U.S.

This image is from the same shoot from as seen above it is a the portrait of a woman in a traditional head wrap and red lipstick against a wooden fence on the bottom is the original photo. The photo on the top is the same image except manipulated by being cut up in to diamond shaped pieces and well as an overlay of a barbed wire fence was applied. The second image creates more of an overall interesting subject and mood of the photo than the original. Also, the overlay of the fence and the cut out shapes I added in order to mimic the shape of the overlaid image of the fence I feel creates more of an interesting message than the original did. The final image is more successful because it is more interesting and provokes more thought and argument with the message it carries than the original image presented.

This was my favorite 3D piece of art that was at my school’s art show. A student from my school, Corey, created this functional vase in a Ceramics class. I was drawn to this piece of art because of the interesting lines and the iridescence of the vase.

This is an abstract piece of artwork from my school’s local art show. The artist, Emannuelle, created a portrait of a woman’s face with these unconventional objects which make it hard to realize that the subject of the photo is actually a  woman. I like this piece because of the uniqueness by using unconventional materials and the complexity in the textures that the materials give the piece.

This is my favorite 2D piece of art from the art show. My friend Mitch made it in our AP Digital Photography class. I like this photo because of how interesting the overlapping of faces is and the overall message of awareness to the lgbtq+ community that it brings.

This is a photo of a civilian in the city walking under some construction on the side walk of the city of Chicago, in this photo there are many lines throughout including the metal poles and the trail that the lights create.I took this photo on Washington Street in downtown Chicago, IL during a field trip my AP Digital Photography class went on together. I took this photo mainly because I was drawn to the construction that was happening around the area. As I started to take pictures of some of the construction I noticed this pathway which I thought was interesting looking because of the lines it created. Lines are made in this photo by the metal rods on the sides as well as the trail of lights that travel in a line. I waited at the end of this pathway until people started to walk by underneath and snapped some photos. Lastly, I added some filters in order to mute the color in order to enhance the gloomy mood. Also, muting the color helped to enhance the focus of the photo to be on the lights and the person.

The original image is of a chair against a fabric background that I took in a thrift store. On the right is the same image after editing and manipulation. I chose to cut the image into stripes with the inspiration of a bar code in mind. Then, I added a filter called toy camera 5 which added a vignette and stretched the lines out. The effects added mystery to the overall mood of the image.

The image on the left is the final image after editing and the image on the left is the image prior to any editing. I added five different filters in order to achieve this effect on the final image. Prior to editing the image had little story-line behind it and simply looked like a plain picture of a house however, with editing the entire mood of the photo has been changed and elevated. The main thing that changed the images was in the final image has a much more intensified sky which creates a eerie and gloomy mood in the overall image that was not present in the image prior to editing

In order to create the image on the top I combined the two photos located at the bottom. I took a photo of some old post cards inside of a vintage shop and an image of a whole on the side of an abandoned barn. First, I took the image of the cards and edited it slightly in order to make it less orange I toned down the saturation. Then, put it behind the image of the barn in Adobe Photoshop. Secondly, I used the eraser tool in order to erase the part of the image of the barn that was in the center of the hole in order to reveal the image of the cards lying underneath. Once that was completely erased and the cards were visible I added detail extractor and glamour glow which are two filters. Lastly, I added a frame and that is how I created the final image.

The image on the right is what my photo looked like before editing in Adobe Photoshop. Whereas, the photo on the left is after editing. I chose to manipulate this photo by making it stretch out beyond the frame. This is a photo taken of a dress that sold large postcards that are from many years ago. This dress was located in a small vintage shop out East of Oswego, IL. I chose to photograph this subject because I loved the interesting colors of the cards and I thought a dress made of cards is just an interesting thing that isn’t seen very often. I edited this photo by filling in many of the gaps between the cards on the skirt of the dress with other cards by copying and pasting some of the already existing cards. Then, in order to make the dress look more realistic ad flowy I used the liquefy tool in order to blend and smudge the rigid edges of the cards into one another.  Lastly, I copy and pasted an image of a young woman’s face from one of the cards onto the background of this image in order to create a more nostalgic effect and to further emphasize the idea that this dress carries years of history on it. After pasting the young woman’s face from the cards onto the background I made it larger but not large enough where the entire dress fit on the inside of the image of the woman’s face to ensure the illusion that the dress was going beyond the frame of the background.

My overall theme for interpreting freehand was the idea of cultural fluidity. In order to emphasize this I chose to keep the backgrounds of the cover, inside cover, as well as the transparency a fluid look by liquefying them in adobe Photoshop. Further more I used a similar hazy filter over the inside cover and cover in order to make them correlate.
