It
There was a time before I knew of it Or at least I think there must have been I can't remember not having seen those blazing eyes
But no one is born knowing it
So there must have been a period where my mind was blank of all those pictures
The ones where its embers grow into a cacophony of flame
The snap shots of blurry shadows with the suggestion of something more lurking in their murky depths
Just out of frame
Waiting for the moment when it catches your eye
And you see it full on
Locking your gaze and you can't look away for now it's seen you
And if you break your stare
You'll shatter
You can't see anything else now
You can't feel anything else now
You remember snippets of its form
All Smokey tendrils and unremarkable features
But its eyes
Dear Lord its eyes
You remember them
You'll never forget them
You feel them following you even now
Every move you make those horrid pits of decaying coals are watching
Looking at your life hungrily
Wondering what bits and pieces you won’t notice are gone right away
So that it can reach out its ashen fingers
And gobble up another slice
Until one day
It swallows you

There’s a Fox About Tonight
There’s a fox about tonight
I can hear his rough voice screaming
I’m afraid of what he’ll say to me
Should his bark-song pick up words
~
There’s a fox about tonight
I do believe he’s getting closer
Rustlings in the bramble bushes
Announce his soft approach
There’s a fox about tonight
~
A slight whimper soon escapes me
As I hear him tap tap tapping
On my back porch wooden door
There’s a fox about tonight
I know it now for certain
For he, the beast, stands just before me
Staring blankly at my soul
~
There’s a fox about tonight
And I am out here with him
Prowling, sneaking, skulking, stealing
And crying at the quaking moon
