EXPRESSION OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH
As a Media and Information Literacy
Tumblr media
Freedom of expression is one of the key foundations supporting the democratic process; therefore, maintaining it is critical if we want to live in a society that is fair and equal to everyone. However, an excessive amount of information distributed as a result of freedom of expression poses the issue of discerning fact from fiction, filtering biased narratives, and guaranteeing responsible media practices. That is why media and information literacy (MIL) is such a potent instrument these days.
Freedom of speech gives people of our country, the freedom to express themselves, to be able to share their ideas, views and opinions openly, where the public and the media can express and comment on any political activities and can also be able to express their dissent towards anything they think is not appropriate. Freedom is the state of being able to speak, act, and pursue happiness without unneeded external restraints. Raising awareness about significant social concerns and rights, while also delivering correct information is, in my opinion, far more vital in this generation. It is important because it promotes original thought and creative expression, higher productivity, and a high standard of living in general. As a result, the society's citizens are able to establish their own opinions about matters of general interest. This also promotes the open interchange of ideas, opinions, and information. The right to freedom of speech promotes civic engagement, a free and independent press, an informed citizenry, and an open government.
People are becoming increasingly engaged and involved in government and politics, and the approaching barangay and SK elections provide an excellent opportunity for us to become media and information literate. Freedom of speech plays a crucial role in ensuring open and transparent discussions about politics, government officials, and candidates in upcoming barangay and SK elections. It is critical that citizens use their right to free expression in the upcoming barangay and SK elections to engage in open and honest debates about the candidates and their agendas. Voters can openly express their support or criticism of candidates thanks to free speech, resulting in a more informed electorate and a healthy democratic process. To promote openness and accountability in the political process, citizens should be encouraged to freely express their concerns, ask questions, and participate in debates. As cliché as it gets, the voice of the voiceless always sets to be left unheard of as those from the outskirts of our society always set to be left behind. Our society is full of issues that are unheard of up to this very moment. That's why those who were brave enough stood up to represent those voiceless and shouted their lungs out to express their struggles. These people or civilians with their civil groups just put to use one of their rights according to our constitution, Freedom of Speech. Press Freedom is powerful and essential when exercising freedom of speech and it starts by being literate in media and information literacy.
Indeed, media and information literacy as a manifestation of free speech empowers people to interpret and make better decisions as media users. It is essential for improving access to information and knowledge, and as explained – for the betterment of government and the officials, as well as freedom of expression. As for the people, there are times when we, or they, do not consider thoroughly before making and spreading assertions and points of view that may possibly hurt the sentiments of others. This is a powerful message that we should understand the skill known as MIL, in order to become better media users.
