The only time when all the batkids will work together in perfect harmony is to prank Bruce.

And for the best prank all they needed was a few label makers.

Labels are put on everything.

On every mug, on every plate, on every bandaid package.

The chocolate bars are labeled "BatSnack".

The fruits become "Batana", "Batricot" and "Batermelon".

Every button on the microwave, every key on the keyboard, it all gets a label.

"Batstop button", "Batstart button", "Bat-A-key", Bat-Enter-key".

Bruce's desk isn't simply the "Batdesk". It is the "Batwood construction surface".

There is a label beneath the desk too.

Originally named "underside of Batwood construction surface".

It takes days, weeks, months to remove all the labels.

Until one day, when Bruce makes a few new installations in the cave.

Surely some higher being is laughing at him right now, Bruce thinks, as he pulls of the last one.

I imagine falling in love to be flying through cotton candy clouds in the middle of daylight. It’s the freedom that comes with flight, and the thrill with falling. I imagine it to be a dance mid-air in the vibrant sky to the song of the birds flying by. 

The weightlessness makes me breathe out the vapor of clouds in my face; the height of the flight creates a comforting pressure that comes with feeling something new. 

It’s a burst of sunlight that hits the surface; enchantingly dangerous. It’s a new territory that comes with solitude and isolation – tearing down on my walls that I left unguarded. It’s the dread that I’ll focus on when I realize that what happened is what I allowed. That, when I fell, I allowed myself to be pushed. 

If I fall, I’ll crash with a finality that I’ll allow to overtake me. It's daunting, it's terrifying – I’m jittery with brand new excitement. 

To define what ‘falling in love’ means would be possible at last, but I reckon, with a cost. It may be a cost of being the only one flying – or falling together to a pit, far away from the purple-pink sky. 

Risks can be worth it, for once.

Peter Pevensie studying theology.

Think about it. They find Aslan’s name in their world, and they worship it, but now what? So he learns. He reaches. He studies. He searches for answers and understanding, and he finds them. He keeps detailed notes - who God is, and how he revealed himself in Aslan, and how he reveals himself now - and his relationship with God grows, and his faith grows more than it could in Narnia. 

Maybe he even intends on becoming a pastor some day, because he is so clearly aware that he has been blessed in a way others have not. He knows what it all means on a deeper, almost magical level. 

Just… Peter studying theology.

“but i can feel it inside of me like an old friend come to welcome me home.”

Lucy feels Narnia in her heart. She feels the sensation of her heart beating against her chest as she wills a horse to run faster. She can feel the taste of salt on her tongue and can feel the wind rush through her long (then saddeningly short) hair.

Peter feels Narnia in his bones. When he shakes the hands of strangers he can feel the strength of one twice his age. When he speaks he hears a voice echo and bounce off of his brain with the power of a king. And when aches of age start to come, he remembers them like old friends that had left him (or perhaps he had left them) and were coming back again.

Edmund fells Narnia in his mind. He can feel the knowledge of years he has yet to have stir in his brain during long nights or thought-provoking moments. He can pull the clearest images of a sunny day at Cair Paravel. He can remember the exact corridors to the palace and if he thinks long enough he can picture himself there, his crown lopsided, a laugh blossoming in his strong chest, the stare of an angry brother boring into him. He remembers words that fill his mind, he can feel himself holding back a snide remark, can feel a smirk pull at the edges of an older (and then suddenly prepubescent) face.

Susan can’t feel Narnia anymore. But, late at night, when she’s lying down and in that place between dreams and awake, she can hear it. A lions roar echoing in her mind. The sound of metal hitting metal in a deadly dance that would end in only one victor. A grown voice mingling with the adolescent words of her younger (but once, much older) sister.

And she thinks it’s a premonition. The future, perhaps. The one she used to dream up with her siblings when the wars that plagued her both internally and externally were too much. When nights were spent half-awake in fear of an air raid and when logic didn’t make sense.

But later, when she’s finally slipped into the deep of a dream, a real forewarning comes. One she doesn’t remember because she wasn’t there.

The sound of screeching breaks, the outcries of children and adults alike, a clang of metal against metal where there is no dance and no victors emerge. A train wreck. And then, silence…

My weird yet effective writing routine

To me, writing is quite an intuitive process. I basically just follow my gut. Nevertheless, throughout the years, I’ve been able to develop a pretty effective routine, and I’m going to share it with you now!

Writing circuits. I don’t know about you, but I’m super lazy, and I also love to procrastinate. So, instead of writing for three hours straight, I split this time into little circuits and plan them throughout the day. Let’s say I’ll write for an hour in the morning, then an hour and a half in the afternoon and so on. It’s also incredibly beneficial for your health – both mental and physical.

Have a plan.  I’m a discovery writer, and I don’t really outline that much. But as I go about my day – eg. when working out, or running, or cooking, or eating, or sitting and doing nothing because of this procrastination right – I think about what I want to accomplish. And I usually ask myself the following questions. What is the purpose of this scene? Which characters should appear in this scene? Should it be more visual or more internally-focused? What actually happens? How should I describe it? Thanks to this, I have a general plan, and I’m much more motivated to actually write instead of visualizing that scene in my head (we all know this, don’t we?).

Write. Then I write. I write whatever pops into my head. I don’t care if it’s logical. I don’t care how many times I use abruptly, saw, felt, etc. I just allow my imagination to create this story.

Notes. When I end my final little session, I usually leave some comments for myself. What’s going to happen next, what’s the next big thing I want for my characters, etc. Having these notes makes everything easier; I immediately know what I’m supposed to do.

Having fun. I don’t care about the word count, deadlines, or anything like that. I enjoy the process, and I’m always very grateful for everything I write. I actually have this cute/weird habit: Whenever I end my writing session, I say ‘thank you’. Out loud. (Yeah, awkward, huh?) Thank you for my amazing imagination which allows me to create places and people in my mind! This kind of approach always makes me happy and even more motivated for my next writing session.

Fantasy Wardrobe: Shoes, Slippers and Boots

I have covered historical clothes from head to ankle but I haven't covered shoes yet. So thanks to @sara-toftlund I will finally be exploring some historical shoes.

Buskin

Buskins are knee/calf-length boots with open toes. They would be laced up at the front. These were worn by mainly soldiers or hunters in Ancient Greece and Rome because they protected the legs.

Caligae

The caligae were the famous sandal-boots of the Roman legions. They were made with thick hobnailed soles and laced at the front. These are the boots that give Emperor Caligula his name since he often wore when dressed like a little legionnaire when living with the Germanic legions. Basically by calling him Caligula we are calling him "Little Boots"

Chopine

Chopines were the beginning of platform shoe. They were worn mainly in 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Chopines were made like this to protect the feet from the dirty streets and add a bit of height to the wearer. They were popular with rich women and courtesans. They would be made from wood or cork and often decorated with fabrics and beads.

Geta

The geta are the traditional Japanese footwear. They look rather like flip flops with thick soles. The geta would be worn in all kinds of weather to protect the feet outside except the snow.

Crakows

Were the mad looking shoes we see in art from the Middle Ages with the really long toes. The toes would often be curled and the shoes would be highly decorated.

Moccasin

The Moccasin is a Native American shoe often fashioned from deerskin or leather. The Moccasin consists of a sole of unworked leather and were often fashioned with a vamp, a flap of leather, at the base of the ankle.

Slippers

Slippers are rather a general term for shoes. Slippers would be commonly worn by women in the West but were also worn by both sexes in Eastern Empires such as Persia and India.

Boot

Boots are commonly marked down as the go to style of shoe for fantasy. Boots would often be worn when ridingor hunting or in bad weather. Noblity would not wear boots inside as they were seen as more of an outdoor shoe.

Fantasy Wardrobe: Popular Men's Fashion of History

Fashion is one of my favourite worldbuilding components and choosing which way I want characters to look, is one part of research that is more fun than work. The use of different styles give each culture a defined feel and could act as a symbol of all kinds of lands in your WIP. Since it is your WIP, you can play with different elements of the garments and pay fast and loose with the styles.

Shirt

The shirt is the key to every other item of clothing on this list. The shirt was always worn under everything. It was often made of linen and worn by all classes. The shirt was often embroidered with blackwork and was sometimes even able to peak out from slashings in the garment over it. Shirts were seen as an intimate item of clothing. You should hear about the chaos that occurred when Anne Boleyn found out that Katherine of Aragon was still sewing Henry VIII's shirts.

Tunic

The tunic was worn by all classes. The tunic could be sleeveless or with sleeves. Tunics usually reached the knee or mid thigh when worn in hot climates and could be cut to the hip like a regular shirt today. They were belted at the waist.

Doublet

The doublet was a jacket worn over a man's undershirt. The doublet was usually laced or buttoned up at the front, reaching from the neck of the wearer to the hip of the waist. The doublet was often padded in order to keep the wearer warm.

Jerkin

The jerkin is a tight fitted jacket worn again over the shirt that is buttoned or laced at the front. The jerkin could be worn with or without sleeves. Leather was a popular material for these to be made and was worn by both classes.

Breeches

Are pants. Most breeches stopped at the knee though some reached the ankle, similar to today's trousers. Breeches could be in laced at the front and were worn by every class of men.

Hose

These were a style of pants that usually ended above the knee. Hose were often worn with a codpiece, a rather bold fashion statement for men. Hose would have also been worn with stockings held up by garters. Hose might be padded at the things to add some flare to the look.

Overgown

The overgown is rather like a great loose jacket worn over the doublet or jerkin. It was usually sewn with fur for warmth and made of contrasting fabric than what lay underneath.

Justacorps

This is the classic knee-length coat worn by men 18th century. Men would wear this over a waistcoat and shirt. This was a popular fashion for highborn men. It does still look fine.

Kaftan/ Caftan/Boubou

This is a large robe that is pulled on over the head with long sleeves. It can have a v-neck or round neck. They are usually heavily embroidered.

Achkan/Sherwani

This is the long coat worn by Indian men. It is usually buttoned up at the front, reaches just below the knees and is long sleeved.

Tips on Writing the Opening Paragraph of Your First Story

Writing the first page can be complicated. After all, it is the first part that readers read. If it’s monotonous, they might not read it. The start is an essential part of your story, but it can take a while to write an opening page. Today, I have found some tips and tricks on writing your first page.

1. List some ideas out.

Listing some ideas is a helpful tool to use when we are writing, and an even better way to help plan. List some ideas. Are there any special catchphrases you want to use? What’s happening in your story at the beginning? What is your opening sentence? How do you want to start your story? You can try to list out some ideas with these questions, plus many other ones that may pop up in your head!

hello !! so ive been writing for years, right, and like everything about my writing style and grammar and world building and characterizations and all that have all developed and became better over the years and i’m super happy that it did (especially since im a non native english speaker) but the one thing that i’ve always had a problem with is conversations / interactions between characters. i’m a very awkward person, im introverted and i have bad social anxiety, i never considered myself as witty and i have no clue how to write in pop culture references or just references in general to make conversations more interesting.. basically i’m hopeless with it and i don’t know how to change / improve that. do you have any clues? or should i just give up completely? hahah not really but.. im feeling very helpless right now and i’m desperate for help. thank you so much !!

Definitely don’t give up. I’m not the best at this in English either, I feel much more confident in writing dialogue in my mother language. But I will try to give you a general overview on how to write conversation and I hope this will be helpful for you.

How to write conversation

fictional dialogue: it gives your story and characters life and breaks up the bulk of actions and descriptions; it makes your character more believable and relatable, but be careful to remember that fictional dialogue is not like real-life conversation. People tend to talk a lot and often get lost in their own talking and don’t finish their sentences. A lot of ‘useless’ information gets exchanged. So even if you feel like you are not the best at conversations in real life, the conversations you write are just impressions of normal conversations. A fictional conversation is merely trying to look normal, but follows a lot of different guidelines.

don’t spell everything out:

start at the important parts

don’t write every little thing out

only use small talk when it is making a point

make your dialogue short, but impactful

reasons for dialogue:

furthering the plot

your characters coming to conclusions

finding out information

showing personality, beliefs and feelings of characters

show conflict:

conversation where everyone agrees the whole time is boring

conflict can go from actual fighting to discussing what’s for dinner

make your characters have conflicting goals

let someone voice doubt or hesistancy in agreeing to something

if it’s pleasant talk to show their happiness, keep it short and sweet

find their voice:

everyone talks differently

not every character needs a completely unique way to talk, but you should be able to distinguish who talks and how they feel

list of different ways to talk:

accents/dialects

slang

educated/snobby

being very terse

talking in metaphors/references

talking slow, fast, slurred,...

silence:

sometimes people don’t want to participate in a conversation

try to show what they are doing instead

let the other person react to them being ignored

dialogue tags:

you don’t always them when you already established who’s talking

when you use them you can use a lot of different words to illustrate how someone speaks (list of examples I found)

but don’t use them too much, said is often fine

break it up by describing what someone is doing while talking

how to get better:

read your dialogue out loud and see if it flows or sounds too stilted

read different types of dialogue in literature and look how it gets utilised and how different types of people talk and get their feelings across, etc.
