#UWFRIDAYFAVE This is Jane! We know. She's the most adorable thing ever! Jane is in her 3A term of Arts and Business majoring in sociology! In her free time, she loves to paint. — One of my favourite experiences was my first co-op as a Communications and Social Media Coordinator for the Faculty of Environment. I always tried to say yes and prove myself in every opportunity, so I was given a lot of creative freedom. I was really grateful for this experience because, with all that creative freedom, I got to develop the skill set that I wanted and exercise my creativity. I even got the chance to design national level advertisements, which I feel so honoured in having been able to do so! One piece of advice I could give to incoming students is to take advantage of the fact that everyone in university right now is similar to you. Everyone is in the same stage in life, striving towards similar goals. We’re all still trying to figure ourselves out, we all want to learn, earn an education to eventually make an impact, and form connections, so it’s so easy to make friends. Especially in first-year, everyone is new to this environment and wants to make friends, so that’s sort of the prime time to do it! Some of the friends I made in REV (Ron Eydt Village, my residence in first-year) are people I know I’ll be in contact with for the rest of my life. — To be featured, use the hashtag #UWFRIDAYFAVE or DM us! Jane is wearing our striped sleeve shirt, available in-store only. Make a friend by saying hello to someone in the comments below!

This is David! David is currently working for GRT (Grand River Transit) as a student planner! He will be going into his 3A year of planning in the fall. (We think he’s one of the most handsome planners ever.. show him some love in the comments!) David’s favourite sport is Volleyball. He loves traveling, the show with Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, and having deep conversations. He also once burned his ear with a flaming marshmallow! - With the term coming to an end, we asked David what is one of the most valuable things he’s learned about here at Waterloo is. Here’s what David had to say: - “One thing that I have learned over the last few years is to be more at peace with things that are out of my control. I used to think that the amount of work I put in was directly correlated with the results I would see. It was a pretty arrogant and toxic way of thinking because it failed to acknowledge how lucky I am to have a lot of things that I didn’t do work to earn and created this self-punishing mentality. If I didn’t achieve a result that I wanted, I would be furious at myself and think that I needed to work harder. But the amount of work I put in can only do so much; there will always be things that I cannot control. I still firmly believe that it’s important to work hard, especially for things that I really want to achieve. But now I am in a place where if I work hard for something and I don’t achieve the desired result, I can live with that because I know there is not anything else that I could have done. I’m getting to a point where I can be proud of myself even in those moments where I “failed”, because I gave it everything I had. Now I find a lot of situations less stressful, because there is no point in worrying about something that I cannot do anything about. It then becomes easier to focus on myself and the things that I can control.” - David is wearing the Warriors Tee Shirt available online and in-store. Shop with the link in our bio. We hope this is a reminder to everyone, especially those stressing over exams, to keep your head up and keep moving forward!

#UWFRIDAYFAVE Happy Engineering Day! Mathieu is from Montreal and in his 2B term in Mechanical Engineering. He is part of the of the University of Waterloo Formula Motorsports team (@uwfsae) and in his free time he hits the gym and plays video games.
— “One of my favourite experiences so far at UW is being on the Formula Motorsports team where we build a formula style open wheel racecar and compete against teams from around the world. During the Formula North competition, important parts were breaking, most notably our front wing broke and we had to run without the entire aero package. We had the odds stacked against us, but the entire team pulled together and persevered. We ended up finishing 3rd in one event and 5th overall out of 22 teams, way better than any of us were expecting. It was gratifying to know that all our hard work and long hours finally paid off.
This experience was really reflective of engineering, and even Waterloo as a whole. Looking at my to do list can be intimidating sometimes. You have the intense workload, the competitive job search, then the house search and living on your own, all while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a social life. Sometimes it feels like you can’t do everything, but you have no option other than to try. And everytime, you always get through it. You look back and realize that all your hard work and focus paid off. You also realize that you’re never alone. There will always be more friends, resources, and other supports to help than you think. I’ve grown to really appreciate this process. Waterloo has pushed me in ways I thought I wasn’t prepared for and I can now approach bigger problems with more confidence.” — Mat is wearing the UW sleeve stripe shirt and the UWaterloo Rugby Sweater (available only in store).
