After the Red Death explodes, Stoick runs ahead of everyone else to try to find Hiccup. Gobber and the kids show up a few moments later once Stoick has already found Toothless.

Watching their normally "stoic" chief run off shouting for his son would have already been jarring. They don't know if Hiccup survived or not. But then when they finally find Stoick again, he's collapsed to his knees with grief.

That would have been so upsetting. Their leader, normally a beacon of strength and perseverance, kneeling at the feet of a beaten dragon and almost unable to form words-- devastating. It could not be more clear that Hiccup is dead.
