Research Blog #5
My artist blog will be about Jackie Mulder and her upcoming releasing book Thought trails. Foam Editions will be hosting an event to celebrate this on May 15. Her works explore nature and it seems to have a crafty look to it as well. With stiches and rips, this art work creates a whole new picture with its new editions. Her works appear to be in greyscale with pops of color from the stitches sewing the picture together.
I love these Jackie's work because they feel so eerie and old fashion, like a piece of history forgotten and clawing its way back to be remembered. I love the whole of of stitching the pictures and I hope to do that with my own pieces of work. I think its fitting as they are trying show healing through landscapes and nature, as stitches are a way to heal and keep everything together.
4.
What I perceived from this work is stitching (healing) yourself through nature and not every healing process is going to be beautiful as you can see with the messy and blurry photos.

Book Report #3
This book report will be on The World Through My Eyes by Daido Moriyama. Photos taken after WW2, these pictures feature many blurry shots, random street shots, lots of women and a bit of animals all thrown into the mix. He was a man of capturing the scene, even during the most boring of them. All of these shots are captured in black and white.
I really liked the photos that Daido Moriyama had shot. It felt very human, like I can walk into the street and see the same thing. I liked the eeriness that some shots had, which is understandable as it was just after WW2. I really liked the composition of the photograph that he shot in the fields. The natural cut off of the pages makes it look like 2 separate pieces, when it really is just one. I feel like a lot of his pieces were just very funny and I hope to capture my shots like him. I will say that some of his shots feel like him being a creep, but maybe he really is trying to be artistic. For example, listed below, he has a shot of a women running away from him. Maybe staged, maybe not, if you read too much into it its kinda eerie. He also had a picture of what could be a bathhouse for women, taken behind their backs. Once again could be staged, could be not.

4.
I know many had critiqued Daido Moriyama for his shots as they are blurry and not perfect, but I feel like it fits perfectly with the title of things through his eyes. It’s a very stressful time to go through, bombs being dropped on you, unstable economic, I feel like these pieces perfectly captured what was goin on around him and a perfect piece of history to look back on.

Book Report #2
My book report will be on genetic self-portrait by Gary Schneider. It included a few pictures of Gary and shots of all his chromosomes, hands, eyes, ears, hair and even sperm. They had a very different approach to most photographic books as it was inverted, the subject being white and the background being black. It resembled an x-ray. He list what each shot is at the back and explains more about each.
I really liked the shot with his hands. It was what drew me into the book immediately as it looked like a mini galaxy between his veins, which is true. I also loved the shot of behind his eyeballs as it looks like we are staring up into the trues during a full moon. I don’t think I could ever recreate these shots but they are very beautiful and I will keep the idea of galaxy veins in my mind.

4.
I thought his work was very beautiful and expressed a different way of taking a self portrait. He took it quite literally. In this website, they say he pushed the concept of photography to the extreme and I think so as well as these looked like x-rays being photographed. While controversial, I think he did a great job of photographing them and if anything, helps with his portrayal of his own self portrait. They really are capturing pieces of work.

Book Report
This book report will be on Chance Encounters - The LA Project by Douglas McCulloh. The original prints being 16 x 20 and printed on silver gelatin prints. These pieces are very unsuspecting until you read up on the context of it. McCulloh would walk around/drive around LA and talk with the people shown in these photos. Each photo is accompanied by a story or context of behind the scene, some of them with morbid context behind them. These photos were shot in black and white, with shots of people being caught of guard or not know that they have been shot. It also has a very large scope of the landscape around it. Many of them being lower income or desolate places.
I love the concept of a story to go along with the picture. It just helps bring the picture even more to life than it does. It is especially good paired with the black and white as well. I don’t remember who said this, but I once heard, and agree, that black and white is great at capturing the main subject of the shot. There is no color to distract you from the main focus and you get a look at all the detail through the values. I love these shots because they are so organic and I find it funny because it looks like he is secretly taking some of these. I feel like this will help me greatly with my next project as I want to try and capture organic scenes like this too, even if I am staging them. Below are my favorite shots and shots of the stories that I enjoyed.

4.
McCulloh seemed like such a great dude. He seemed like he cared a lot, especially after read his book. He talked with anyone he could and told their story even if it wasn’t a long one. He had a way of bring out the best of peoples strories.

Research Blog #4
This artist, Mengxuan Li, creates lovely bright, fantasy based type pieces. Many of the pieces named in Chinese or just random keyboard smash, these arts of work tells a story in a way. Of a girl finding her way through these places with her companion, the black cat.
Her artwork caught my eye immediately as they are so bright and cute. these pieces are very inspiring as I also love that fantasy type landscape and story building. I also hope to create comics one day so these piece are just beautiful to look at.
4.
These art pieces are so whimsical and breath taking that sometimes you don't really need an explanation for them. As stated in the article, she is an artist that has moved to Japan from China, maybe to find inspiration or just find her muse. Her pieces are also selling in galleries as well. In a way, these pieces feel like a break away from everyday life, just to live and explore and be yourself.

Research Blog #3
The Black Doll (2017), by Qiana Mestrich, are pieces of abstract dolls. These pieces, inspired by black dolls being sold on eBay, Esty, etc., are geometric in shape and full of neutral/darker colors. Each piece being named after their respective doll.
I thought this piece was really interesting. The name first caught my eye, and it surprised me to find pieces that were abstract rather than actual photos or pieces of dolls. I'm not sure how this will help me in the future, as I am not so much of an abstract person, but it does inspire me to also create pieces off of my culture or experiences. For sure this will will be fun concept to try out every once in awhile.
4.
These pieces are very beautiful and are quite symbolic as well. s the artist states themselves, back then there weren't that many dolls that would represent a poc. In a way, these pieces reminds me of those test that doctors would ask you, " What do you see in this piece?", " Which piece represents you best?" It's like asking us now, which doll represents you best? These pieces inspire me to also seek out my own doll to represent me as well. I also think it really interesting as well, that as you enlarge the piece, the more prominent the pixels around it will be. Of course that is fact with any piece, but with this piece, it just shows more and more of the individuals being represented as these grow.

Research Blog #2
The author of Why Am I Sad, Dana Stirling, created this book full of sadness, loneliness and eeriness addressing her struggles with depression. Created in 2024, it is showcased in a small book of 110 pages, 8 x 9.5 inches, and is a composed of single subjects, such as smiling faces, dead animals, or inanimate objects.
I was first drawn in by the name, because same, why am I sad? I might actually go out and buy this book (if I can) because this beautifully captures what I want to capture in my own work. he sadness and eeriness that everything is fine and beautiful. Also void of people, but we pretend that's not a factor. The pictures taken gives me a feeling of just me in my little world. I also love how the artist left some of these pages blank. It gives off the sense of emptiness that you may also feel when you are sad.
4.
I appreciate the description of the content that this book has to offer. With the book review. I agree with many of their points, of the tension of trying to balance the tension of happiness and the sadness within. Hence these pictures of beautifully, clean captures of pictures, some even striking nostalgia, yet an eeriness lingers. This perfectly captures how it may be all smiles and happiness but inside still lingers something more ominous.

Research Blog #1
This is a piece called Desperate Urbanization by Rasel Chowdhury, 1988. A series of photographs in desolate and, as the title says, desperate places. These places include areas and scenery around Bangladesh: rivers, cities, homes, and unfinished environments.
I was first drawn in from the cover of this piece, it will be the first picture shown below, as it has such a eerie but sadness to it. The title is the perfect description of these pieces. It also has a sense of loneliness to it, which I strive to capture in my own pieces. I want pieces that are peaceful and beautiful, but also painfully lonely, which isn't such a bad thing in my opinion.
3.
4.
Chowdhury makes many pieces of underdeveloped places and the struggles of it. I perceive the work as hauntingly hoping for a sense of more. Being underdeveloped and all, these pieces show us, but it also shows us the abundance of detail as well, which I think is a great juxtaposition. Underdeveloped but also cluttered.

Hello to those who will see this! My name is Lily Thao, or you can call me Lolo on here. I don't really like posting my personal information on places like this so I think my name will be fine hopefully. I hope this class will help me take better pictures and maybe have a better conception of good composition. I like drawing, listening to music, playing Roblox, and reading webtoons.
Here is a portrait of Lolo, AKA me, I hope this will suffice.
