Scumbag System (SVSSS donghua) episode 4 Thoughts (spoilers)
(covers SVSSS chaps 9 - 11 , BC Novels Translations)
I fall in love with SQQ in the donghua even more every week. Listen to how he says "Shidi" and "Aiyayaya". How freaking adorable is that?? I don't care about the weakness of his CGI nature, the parts of him that work for me (his face, his voice, his personality) works VERY VERY WELL. I worship Shizun.
I love his expressions!! He's so pretty and precious!!

Speaking of pretty...

Helllooooo Liu Qingge!!! He's so pretty even when bloodied and distressed. Not to mention, LiuShen shippers got some good food this week.
Btw, the words in Chinese SQQ used to describe LQG was "small white face", which can mean young pretty boy but also is slang for a dude that lives off of women...aka a gigolo. 😂
SQQ was laying it on thick. I didn't mind it at all, even if at the end of the day, my heart belongs to BingQiu.

The height gap is closing!!! Keep growing Bingmei my baby!!

"Luo Binghe watched and felt his heart sway. He knew Shen Qingqiu was powerful, but he didn’t think that he was powerful to this degree." - from chap 11
I'm guessing Bingmei was feeling equal parts admiration and horniness for Shizun at this point. 😁

Finally, I love Sha Hualing. Love her looks, her outfit, her swagger, her voice, the red tinge in the whites of her eyes, her cute demon ears, and her attitude. I cannot wait to see her face off against Liu Mingyan.

Scumbag System Donghua: A pleasant surprise
I know SVSS fans had low expectations for the donghua, including myself, but it has a lot of heart put into it. Sure, the animation isn’t the best but that’s more a budgeting issue. With what they did get, the donghua team did amazing work!
Scumbag System makes up for it’s subpar animation with very good storytelling. It managed to capture the essence of SVSS immediately.
This mocking narration by Shen Yuan of the basic premise with 2D animation so perfectly establishes the story and what kind of a person SY is. His humour, personality and how he sees the novel gets established very quickly and you can’t help but get attached to this dumbass who hate-read 6666 chapters of novel.
The next thing that caught my attention is the relationship between Sy!sqq and Lbh, how they establish where they are now and what they will be to one another in the future. I was happy to see that they didn’t try to imply any romance between Nyy and Lbh to un-homo it all. So far, they’re doing a lot to show how much sy cares for lbh. The observations from afar, they little moments between them in the op, and the BIGGEST, most beautiful fucking symbolism of all;
The Jade pendant and the Leaf
That pendant plays a really important role in their relationship in the novel, but the visual representation of it here exemplifies it. You have to watch the scene to know how beautifully it panned out. Leaves are very explicitly related to Sy!sqq here. Shen Yuan uses them to protect Luo Binghe from the shadows. Yes, Luo Binghe lost his mother and she is irreplaceable but he isn’t alone anymore. Shen Yuan will protect him.
The third thing which I loved was the attention to detail when it came to the MCs. Shen Qingqiu is absolutely, mind-boglingly gorgeous. They put in so much effort to make him beautiful. It’s nothing like the first few trailers.
THIS MAN! LOOK AT HIM!! WHAT’S HE SO GORGEOUS FOR!?(to distract us from the ctrl c+ ctrl v bg characters). He isn’t just pretty though. He’s expressive as heck. My main concern with 3D was expression, but the combination of all the painful effort into facial expressions added to the VA’s amazing work made Shen Yuan come alive!
They didn’t skimp on Luo Binghe. Oh no no no. This baby had me cooing at him in his entrance scene. He has large eyes and the prettiest face, plus he is even shorter than Ning Yingying when 14. They did a lot to make him the “pure white sheep”.
Look at this and tell me your heart didn’t break a little.
The VA also captures the “I’m so baby UwU!” thing perfectly and it just makes me want to protect this kid even more. Watching the episode, Luo Binghe had so many expressions going on when he got beat up by Ming Fan and his dumbass friends, I could feel his panic. The scene where he’s searching for the pendant, his frantic body language + the micro-expressions they tried to fit in. Perfection. I want to weep.
The donghua team is doing their very best to preserve the feel of the novel. It’s fast paced but it doesn’t feel like it and leaves you wanting more. Both episodes ended in such cliffhangers I wish I could just binge through this. They’re preserving the romantic elements between sy!sqq and lbh to whatever extent they can(the ed and op, my god they have me screaming)
Speaking of, the Opening and Ending are so beautiful. The Opening is stuck in my head.
JUST WATCH THE DAMN THING!
Yes the animation is clunky but the dialogue delivery, the comedic timing and the MC character designs+the soundtrack make up for it. Don’t let it go just because it’s a little difficult to get used to because you’ll be missing out. The donghua team did their best and I applaud them for doing so well.

Taoist Cultivation Meditation Technique
I got some asks and one comment in this post from @sparklemotioneer about explanations towards Meditation Cultivation Techniques.
The field is vast, there is a lot of variations and - as far as I personally know - every Clan or Path has their own Meditations on top. I am not the very best in explaining those methods because you usually get them taught without words (and english isn’t my first language, so I’m lacking eloquence).
I’m not going in order of importance, or in any order at all. Please bear with me.
Meditations are the necessary basic before any Cultivation can take place. A mind that is not influenced by the outside but works by ones own command is essential in attaining a state in which it is possible to get a hold of one’s inner magical abilities. Every human owns this innate talent and the innate knowing, but without knowledge and without training it is deeply hidden and therefore can’t be used.
Where the breath goes, the emotions follow
Take a not on your breathing when you are going through your day. Notice how you breath changes with every emotion. When you love, your breath becomes stable, slow, long. When you fear, your breath becomes short, fast, unrhythmic.
We are used that our breath is guided by our emotions, but what if you train yourself to have that reversed? When you are in a situation which makes you feel anxiety, change your breath to the rhythm of love. Your feelings will automatically align to your breath.
Fair point, that sounds easier than it is and needs some training. But it is manageable.
The mind is a stormy sea and a silent lake
This is about internal focus. Most of the time our mind is a stormy sea. Thoughts are running, disturbing. Emotions are out of control and swayed by every bit we see and hear. Calculations and Constructions blurry the rough waters within our mind. In this state, there is no calm, there is no inner understanding and therefore there is no possibility for any sort of Cultivation. But if one goes into meditation, taking note of thoughts running around but not paying attention to it. Just noting where one thought begins and where it ends. Concentrating on the gaps where there is no thought present. Just between the end and the start of a new thought. With time these gaps become broader. Stillness and calmness washes over the mind. The Stormy sea became a silent lake. The still lake is a reflection of the Infinite. The true depth can be known and this is where the real can be found.
Gazing inward
Lan Zhans signature stare is actually this technique. This is an advanced meditation practice. It may probably hit no understanding if you aren’t experienced in several Meditation Arts.
The eyes are half closed (you may take the tip of your nose as a direction point for your focus). You are aware and awake but drift into a meditative state - into a calm state. Notice how the energies around you swirl, and then let go of them. Turn your gaze inward (literally said). Your physical eyes still focus the tip of your nose. But your “inner eyes” face inwards, towards your own energies, your own energy flow. Slow long breaths. Calmness inside.
There are many variations of that technique but from there on you can shift and change inner energies. It enhances your communication between your body and your mind.
—–
There are a lot more meditation methods but those 3 are the most important (from my personal point of view) when it comes to a mind-body control. Especially a mind control, if I might say so. A calm mind is the get-go for any Cultivation.
I based this post on CQL, because sometimes you see glimpses of the techniques.
Thank you for reading <3

Hi! Loving your meta on suibian :)) Just wondering what were your frustrations with cql, especially considered you've watched this in multiple mediums? (I've only watched cql)
Hi anon! thank you so much!
Oh boy, you’ve unlocked a boatload of hidden dialogue, are you ready?? :D (buckle up it’s oof. Extremely Long)
@hunxi-guilai please consider this my official pitch for why I think the novel is worth reading, if only so you can enjoy the audio drama more fully. ;)
a few things before I get into it:
I don’t want to make this a 100% negative post because I really do love CQL so much! So I’m going to make it two parts: the changes that frustrated me the most and the changes I loved the most re: CQL vs novel. (again, don’t really know anything about donghua or manhua sorry!!) Sound good? :D
this will contain spoilers for the entirety of CQL and the novel. just like. All of it.
talking about the value of changes in CQL is difficult because I personally don’t know what changes were made for creative reasons and what changes were made for censorship reasons. I don’t think it’s entirely fair to evaluate the narrative worth of certain changes when I don’t know what their limitations were. It’s not just a matter of “gay content was censored”; China also has certain censorship restrictions on the portrayal of the undead, among other things. I, unfortunately, am not familiar enough with the ins and outs of Chinese censorship to be able to tell anyone with certainty what was and wasn’t changed for what reason. So I guess just, take whatever my opinions are with a grain of salt! I will largely avoid addressing issues related to how explicitly romantic wangxian is, for obvious reasons.
OKAY. In order to impose some kind of control on how much time I spend on this, I’m going to limit myself to four explicated points in each category, best/worst. Please remember that I change my opinions constantly, so these are just like. the top contenders at this specific point in my life. Starting with the worst so we can end on a positive note!
Henceforth, the novel is MDZS, CQL is CQL.
CQL’s worst crimes, according to cyan:
1. Polarizing Wei Wuxian and Jin Guangyao on the moral spectrum
I’ve heard rumors that this was a censorship issue, but I have never been able to confirm or deny it, so. Again, grain of salt.
The way that CQL reframed Wei Wuxian and Jin Guangyao’s character arcs drives me up the wall because I think it does a huge disservice to both of them and the overarching themes of the story. Jin Guangyao is shown to be responsible for pretty much all the tragedy post-Sunshot, which absolves Wei Wuxian of all possible wrongdoing and flattens Jin Guangyao into a much less interesting villain.
What I find so interesting about MDZS is how much it emphasizes the role of external forces and situations in determining a person’s fate: that being “good” or “righteous” at heart is simply not enough. You can do everything with all the best intentions and still do harm, still fail, still lose everything. Even “right” choices can have terrible consequences. Everyone starts out innocent. “In this world, everyone starts without grievances, but there is always someone who takes the first blow.”
