I haven’t gotten into this campaign of Critical Role yet as much as I was into the last one, but I think that’s understandable. The characters are still new, we’re still learning about them – hell, the players are still learning about them. I also don’t get to watch live anymore, which diminishes some of the excitement. 

I am, however, starting to be kind of glad I don’t identify as a Critter. While the community seems largely positive, supportive and friendly, the hate that gets heaped on the female players (particularly Marisha Rey, though Laura Bailey gets her fair share as well) has always baffled me, and lately it’s getting beyond irritating to the point of actually angering me. (As another post I saw mentioned, Ashley Johnson somehow avoids all of it, probably because she was sweet and innocent as Pike and also due to her having voiced an incredibly popular video game character. Also because she isn’t there as often, what with filming Blindspot in New York.)

I remember talking about the Marisha/Keyleth hate while in line for the GenCon show I saw in… 2016? The young woman ahead of me had a crush on Marisha and was so excited to see her, and between the two of us we couldn’t understand why everyone hated Keyleth. I thought it might have been the fact that she “came between” Vax and Gilmore (which, as you and I know, is horseshit; characters do what they do, and Vax fell in love with Keyleth, not Gilmore). These days, I’m not so sure.

I make fun of Gen all the time for being ridiculously volatile and probably setting lots of trainees on fire.

But really, he had to be absolutely beloved in Soldier. For how many soldiers follow him in the mass desertion?? People giving up what they’ve known for years, abandoning everything to fight the mega corporation they know is capable of conquering nations and dominating the whole world. For Genesis. They followed him, wounded and burning bright Genesis in a war they could never win.

No one can tell me he wasn’t utterly adored and so many people looked up to him. Even if they teased about his temper, Genesis was a well loved and well respected leader.
