not to oversimplify an extremely complex discipline but if i had to pick one tip to give people on how to have more productive interactions with children, especially in an instructive sense, its that teaching a kid well is a lot more like improv than it is like error correction and you should always work on minimizing the amount of ‘no, wrong’ and maximizing the amount of ‘yes, and?’ for example: we have a species of fish at the aquarium that looks a lot like a tiny pufferfish. children are constantly either asking us if that’s what they are, or confidently telling us that’s what they are. if you rush to correct them, you risk completely severing their interest in the situation, because 1. kids don’t like to engage with adults who make them feel bad and 2. they were excited because pufferfish are interesting, and you have not given them any reason to be invested in non-pufferfish. Instead, if you say something like “It looks a LOT like a tiny pufferfish, you’re right. But these guys are even funnier. Wanna know what they’re called?” you have primed them perfectly for the delightful truth of the Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker

I am still alive, I’ve been super busy with both College and mental health and have either of those let up? Ha! No. But I need to come back and bring up a very important point.
Respect Greek culture.
It is insane that needs to be said but if you decide to study the Greek gods then with that you have to study both Ancient and Modern Greece culture and the country as a whole, the Gods do not exist in a vacuum, they are a part of many peoples culture and heritage and respect should be given to those people.
The way Greek culture is repeatedly taken so regularly is insane, and no one ever says anything?? No, the Greek Gods are not living in uptown New York in a Penthouse eating your product placement, they’re Greek just let them be in Greece it is not hard.
I will link to the account @margaretkart they are Greek and speak on this discussion and issue regularly, helping people to understand why it’s an issue and what to do to be more respectful. Check them out at and also while you’re there follow them and check out their amazing art! (Seriously it’s so good and informative, TWO FOR ONE!)
And seriously, have some respect when discussing peoples culture. It is, y’know, PEOPLES CULTURE??

ancient greek is beautiful when i forget that the third declension exists… i’m currently looking at the future and the first aorist (i didn’t learn them in class this year for some reason. we’re going so slowly) to procrastinate learning the third declension (we spent two months on this. i still can’t remember anything)

tagged by @transbutchblues!
last book i read : the last one i finished must have been The Discovery of Slowness by Sten Nadolny. i really value the message because i often feel pressured to learn and act more quickly than at my natural pace :/
a book i recommend : ough. um. too many and none at all come to mind, i'll pass on that. just read what speaks to you!
a book i couldn’t put down : Turtle Diary by Russell Hoban! I've never heard anyone talk about it. It takes two adults on a small crazy adventure to free turtles and they therefore break out of the rut of their everyday life for a while (does not cure depression tm but it gave me hope when i was going through it).
a book i’ve read twice : many, especially classics i picked up too early in life and didn't understand at all the first time around. I'll say War and Peace for the fun of it.
a book on my tbr : Thornton Wilder's The Ides of March, i'm hoping to read it while in Greece!
a book i’ve put down : I agree with @transbutchblues, it's mostly nonfiction that i put down. The last one that happened to was Werner Goez's "Gestalten des Hochmittelalters. Personengeschichtliche Essays im allgemeinhistorischen Kontext" (essays on singular people living during the high middle ages) - even though it was written incredibly well i could not bring myself to read more. nonfiction on history is super confusing and irritating for me. i have huge gaps in my knowledge of basic historical facts - i cannot imagine what life was like for the people because every form of documentation is incomplete, and because of that i get frustrated and am unable to remember these dates and facts. i'm keeping the book nonetheless because the hope that someday i will give it a second try is still there
a book on my wishlist : Wrath Goddess Sing by Maya Deane, i actually bought it once but the delivery got cancelled and refunded because it was out of stock :(
a favourite book from childhood : um i remember very little.. there was a series on a mermaid i really adored. (The series is called Pimpinella Meerprinzessin by Usch Luhn)
a book you would give to a friend : I have literally given Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar to a friend. the book radiates calmness.
a book of poetry/lyrics you own : i'm currently reading Heinrich Heine for the first time in my life, and for the first time enjoying german poetry! (prior i've only ever clicked with latin poetry)
a non-fiction book you own : probably the first nonfiction book i ever read was Mathijs Deen's Down Old Roads. It started a fire in me which i cannot explain but i am incredibly grateful for it.
currently reading : slowly picking my way through too many at once: The Persian Boy, two books on medieval german literature, an essay collection on August von Platen, Dyskolos, catull (especially c.63 right now and essays on that), oop
planning on reading next : idrk, i am in a bit of a rut but uni ended yesterday so i'll hopefully can get back into reading more and actually finish books?
tagging anyone who wants to!

A quick visual study for the Ghost of Catullus, who is the co-protagonist of the novel I'm currently writing. Enjoy!

Why are you against spoken latin?
strictly didactically speaking, i’m sure it has its usefulness, but it goes against what i personally want to transmit. it’s a kind of revivalism that is fundamentally incompatible with my relationship with the roman language, literature, and culture as a whole. ‘but hortensius, you’re a promoter of textual necromancy!’ yes, i am! but necrophilology promotes an engagement that’s a two-way trade. language, and its forms of thought, are part of your own contribute — that is, you let the dead speak their language and you speak your own. that’s why translation has the meaning it has. practically speaking, if i speak latin to you here and now, it’s pretty much the same as if we were speaking in english: we’re just using a language to communicate. but latin is not english. latin is a language of the dead and this cannot be ignored: if i speak to you in it, the past ultimately remains silent. it’s not what i want.

If you're lamenting the fact that you used to be able to shoot through a 500-page novel in like a day when you were in middle school and now you can't, it's worth bearing in mind that a big part of that is because when you were in middle school, your reading comprehension sucked. Yes, mental health and the stresses of adult life can definitely be factors, but it's also the case that reading is typically more effortful as an adult because you've learned to Ponder The Implications. The material isn't just skimming over the surface of your brain anymore, and some of the spoons you used to spend on maximising your daily page count are now spent on actually thinking about what you're reading!
