Week 14 - Interning for H.E.
12/07/23
Week 14 of interning under the Human Capital Services team of HigherEchelon Inc. was short and sweet. With my internship ending on December 7th, the team decided to have individual meetings with me to give me some advice, and more avenues they want me to explore in my development through this career. However, what I did not know nor did most of them was that my internship was extended for potentially another four or so months. My advisor/mentor advocated to the high-ups for me to stay on due to a big project that's starting up in the new year that she wanted me to experience and possibly work on. Also, because they are increasing their work parameters they’ve got used to giving me the grunt work (which I enjoy), so one would say they want me around for as long as they can have me. The semester is ending so this will be my last blog but thanks to these posts over the last few months I can read my progress and see the strides I have been able to make in my impending career.

Week 13 - interning for H.E.
12/04/23 Week 13 of interning under the Human Capital Sercives team of HigherEchelon Inc. was pretty eventful. Instead of the usual Coaching through stories podcast work, making a title, finding an intro clip, and creating a description for the episode, my work was upgraded to researching and deciding the focus of the next episode. I enjoyed this a lot because I was able to get deep into a subject that I did not know about before but now know which aids in my sports psychology studies. Also, I was able to gain experience with being turned down multiple times on my research that I thought was best for the topic. This helped me learn how to better take criticism, handle my inadequacy, and learn that I have more potential than surface-level ideas. Before this assignment I would say I was not very creative but the way I was able to reach further into a single idea and connect it to subjects that one wouldn’t normally think of built up my confidence.

Week 12 - interning for HE
11/27/23 Week 12 of interning under the HCS team of HigherEchelon Inc. does not have much to intel. The team has had a halt in productivity because several of the new projects are at a standstill with it being the holiday season. Hence, my week was light, consisting of our weekly Monday Mindfulness training: a team meeting for the entire company to focus on learning techniques that’ll aid in stress regulation, and calming exercising that’ll awaken us for the week to come. Also, our Monday meeting where everyone shared their progress and updates on assigned work from the previous and impending week. As well as their personal life updates, fun activities for the week, and how their Thanksgiving holiday was spent. I spent my Thanksgiving with my internship supervisor’s family, so I had an opportunity to build a deeper connection with her. Therefore, now I feel that I have gained a mentor from this internship which was an objective of interning under this corporation and team. As to my additional work I did the usual minor assignments of listening to more podcasts, which members of the team scripted and hosted, studied up on some topics two of the team members advised me to, and did some grad school research with my internship advisor on our weekly meeting call.

Week 11 - interning for HE
11/20/23 Week 11 of interning under the Human Capital Sercives team of HigherEchelon Inc. was very eventful. My work influx has increased, in that I was given more opportunities for independent work because I have earned my stripes. Some of that work included the usual “Coaching through Stories” podcast work: listening to an hour-long podcast from an in-house team member who hosts professionals in various fields to attend the show, speak on their paths to success, and give advice. Then, I created, about a paragraph-long, caption that summarizes the podcast while making it attractive enough to draw attention to it. The additional part is creating an attractive title for the episode. Although this may sound minor this is the trickiest part because the episodes have so much content that doesn’t always connect to a main subject. Furthermore, I became a part of the higher-up team, Microsoft Teams group so I can be a proxy for students in the Human consulting/Sports psychology field in a new program that HCS has created. This is a two-week long assignment so I will be discussing more on it next week.

Week 10 - Internining for HE
11/13/23
Week 10 of interning under the Human Capital Services of HigherEchelon Inc. does not have much to intel. This week was uneventful in that I was assigned a few assignments from some side projects the organization dabbles in. First, caption creation for a professional coaching podcast called “Coaching through Stories”. The assignment details listening to an hour-long podcast from an in-house team member who hosts professionals in a variety of fields to attend the show and speak on their paths to success and give advice. Then, I created, about a paragraph-long, caption that summarizes the podcast while making it attractive enough to draw attention to it. The other assignment is weekly reading and self-study through a few other podcasts/modules from the organization. What made this week different was that my Association of Applied Sports Psychology videos came in so I began listening to those as well. My favorite part of this week was listening to past “Coaching through Stories” episodes because the several I’ve listened to were hosting professionals in the sports consulting/psychology field, my intended career. The remainder of this week included team meetings on confidential client work which I couldn’t attend entirely.

Week 9 - Internining for HE
11/06/23
Week 9 of interning under the HCS team of HigherEchelon Inc. was a bit stressful because of the time crutch for several assignments. I was assigned two podcasts early last week, both of which were an hour and a half long to listen to. Also, it took another hour to re-examine so I could find 3+ clips 20-60 seconds long to use for the beginning of the published session (the assignment aspect). When I thought I was finished with that, I was given until the end of the same day to go back and listen to the podcasts again and find possible titles and headers. Other miscellaneous work from week 9 was the norm. Our weekly Monday meeting was short and sweet, as for the work discussion aspect; however, everyone was required to wear their Halloween costume. Therefore, the meeting was extended for laughs and giggles about costume observation and Halloween stories. Furthermore, I had one-on-one meetings with several of my higher-ups for follow-ups on confidential assignments, and my mid-term check-up to make sure I am doing well, getting enough hours and my after graduation plan. I think it's so sweet how interactive and caring everyone is for me. I am truly enjoying interning at HE!

Week 7 - Interning for HE
10/23/2023
Week 7 of interning under the HCS team of HigherEchelon Inc. was another light week of in-field self-development: listening to several assigned podcasts, and shadowing in-field meetings. As always, HCS held our weekly Monday meeting which went great. Everyone discussed their assignment updates; however, because I don’t have as extravagant of assignments I spoke about school and how beneficial the HCS podcasts have been for my development in the field. One of my higher-ups attended a conference, the Association of Applied Sports Psychology annual conference, which I am a part of virtually. She attended in person, on October 18-21; therefore, she discussed some learning moments and keynotes she took from the conference. I don’t receive the recording until mid-November so I thought her notes were very beneficial for the future when navigating through the meetings and speakers. Other than those impending hours I'll receive from the AASP virtual conference, interning this week was simple and unadventurous.

Week 6 of Interning
10/15/23
Week 6 of interning under the HCS team of HigherEchelon Inc. was filled with a lot of character development and in-field shadow work. For the past two weeks, I have been having tech issues regarding my HE email and logging on to the HE platform. Therefore, I was not able to be an active member of the team's weekly meetings and scheduled online events. However, after a few calls from HE’s tech operations adviser, I was able to get back into the system (HE is a government contracting company, so there are privacy and confidentially humps needed to be worked through when solving tech problems. Which is why this process was so complicated for me). Once I was back active I had a flood of assignments to get turned in for HE’s podcast platform the very same day. That's where my character development was made because I had to spend two hours getting that work done in the middle of an already cramped day. But, I got it done and I'm pretty sure the work wasn’t even used because I didn’t know about it until it was past due. As to shadow work, I got to sit in a sports psychology session with the Duquense triathlon team hosted by my mentor in HE. It was very informative and exciting to listen in on what my future will one day hold.

Week 4 - Interning for HE
10/02/23
Week 4 of interning under the HCS team of HigherEchelon Inc. does not have much to intel. The team has had a halt in productivity because several of the new projects are in their preengagement phases. Therefore, my week consisted of our weekly Monday Mindfulness training: a team meeting for the entire company to focus on learning techniques that’ll aid in stress regulation, and calming exercising that’ll awaken us for the week to come. Also, our Monday meeting where everyone shared their progress and updates on assigned work from the previous and impending week. As well as their personal life updates and fun activities for the week. My work consisted of listening to more podcasts, which members of the team scripted and hosted. The only collaborative work we did last week was an assignment I had for class: a one-page job description. Which explained what my position on the team is and a synopsis of the company. I can continue to say I am learning a lot and am still very excited to be mentored by the members of the HCS team. Although I have not been an essential part of the team's success yet, I feel that they place me in environments and roles that will soon make me a valuable asset to future projects. Until next week bye!

Week 3 - Interning for HE
Week 3 of interning under the HCS team of HigherEchelon Inc. included an in-person shadowing experience with my primary supervisor. I was permitted to attend a high school a few miles outside of Pittsburgh to observe and assist with a “Performing Under Pressure” hands-on seminar with the school’s swimming teams. The kids examined what pressure is, how best to identify and regulate it, and the keys to performing under pressure. The interactive and most exciting part was the “separation anxiety” game: an M&M separating exercise to encourage communication and introduce how communication can be affected when under pressure (a time restraint). Although, the teachings were for the kids, I took a lot from the lesson. Such as regulating my optimal energy levels for proper situational use. For example, not being at a 10 energy level during the beginning of a mile run but being at a 6 so I can pace myself for the impending long run. Other than that, I have been filling most of my hours with more reading, self-study, and listening to industry-focused podcasts.
Side note: My team has continued to be welcoming and extremely helpful with my entry. Like today, we had our weekly Monday check-up team meetings and although I was not assigned a specific job like other employees to talk about I was still given the floor to speak on what my week detailed (not just professionally but personally).

Week 1 & 2 working for HE
"Week 2 of interning under the Human Capital Services of HigherEchelon Inc. does not have much to intel. The first two weeks have been the introductory phase: one-on-one introduction meetings with all connecting members of the team, paperwork filing, and sitting in on weekly check-up meetings. Furthermore, a few assignments from some side projects the organization dabbles in. First, caption creation for a professional coaching podcast called “Coaching through Stories”. The assignment details listening to an hour-long podcast from an in-house team member who hosts professionals in a variety of fields to attend the show and speak on their paths to success and give advice. My favorite has been listening to past “Coaching through Stories” episodes because the several I’ve listened to were hosting professionals in the sports consulting/psychology field, my intended career.
