Console RPG where your options for the player character’s species are the standard spread of Generic Human, Elf, and Different Elf (You Can Tell They’re Different Because They Have Tattoos), and then the fourth option is three feet of mouth and beard. Just a straight Fizzgig-looking little fuck, played 100% seriously. Their fully voiced dialogue is incomprehensible gargling, which the other characters respond to as though you’d spoken normally. The camera angles in the dialogue and cutscenes are still positioned for the Generic Human’s height, so when you’re talking all you see is your huge, googly eyes peering over the bottom of the frame. This is the only playable character type that can romance every possible NPC.

Something wonderful and unexpected about getting a dog is just how much it has softened me.

I’ve always been a sensitive person, but over time that trait (+shitty experiences) made me guarded. Guarded about going outside, guarded about talking to strangers, guarded about trying new things, being somewhere new, saying the wrong thing, looking stupid…

You are inherently vulnerable with a young dog especially. You’ve got this new creature tethered to you with some line you got at Petsmart, and your creature is 9/10 doing something stupid at any given time but ESPECIALLY on a walk when people approach you. All the worse if they’ve got a dog, god forbid!

But people surprise me with their graciousness. They don’t mind when she does something off-putting. They tell me about the dogs they’ve had that looked like her, and how they miss them. I used to avoid being around kids, but today a family with four of them asked me so politely if they could pet Aud. One of the little boys asked me if she knew how to hold a treat on her nose, and I told him no but showed him how he could put them on her feet and she’d wait until we said it was ok. He asked me if she was a collie and said “I knew that. Because her black and white is different from a … a… Dalmatian.” I remember what it was like to be a kid who really loved dogs and just wanted to share that enthusiasm inside me with other people, before I was made to feel like it was weird to love things openly and too much.

It wasn’t really good for me to go through the world imagining what cruel thing a person might say or do to me next, what feature little kids might make fun of when I turned my back. I smile way more, even though I’ve been mortifyingly self conscious about my smile for most of my life. I’m not so scared of looking like I don’t know what I’m doing, both because I honestly usually don’t AND because it’s not practical to be scared all the time when you have a sensitive dog.

I adore my cats, and for a long time I figured a dog wasn’t for me because they’re just so… doggy and boisterous and externalized in a way I have carefully suppressed in myself. But my cats stay at home, with me, where I feel safe but seldom invite people in. I really needed Aud, a creature I could feel safe with and also bring into the world with me. She carries around a piece of me that she is always showing to the world, reflexively and unapologetically. She can’t help but show it.

Like there’s nothing wrong with it, just because it comes from me.

I needed that. I needed her.
