I just had a passing thought & I bring it to you, the readers. In the original story of Reversal, Juudai & Johan didn't meet one another until the Resistance was well under way. What do you think of them meeting prior to that, before Juudai begins his path of destruction & conquest? Not necessarily friends but having crossed paths & spoken to one another?
Btw, I have ideas for the first 15 fics of possibly 40-50 fics settled. There's a lot of backstory & history to go through. For now, though...

This blog is a Taniya (from YGO GX) safe zone. I like her as a character, whether or not she & Misawa are a couple. We do not know her age or how her species (which may or may not be human) ages. We know she never hurt Misawa because he wouldn't respect her if she had. You don't have to like the character or the ship. But it isn't any of the insulting names it's been called or is being called.
And I will always be a Tigershipper, though my preferred timeframe for anything beyond words is a minimum of 5 years post-canon.

i don’t get horror movies, why doesn’t the protagonist just act in a way which will prevent a story from being told or piece of entertaining media made

Pinned Post : Edited 08/20/2025
I decided to make this my new and permanent pinned post. So, here we go.
I didn't go to the dark side for the cookies. Though they are delicious.
I am over 21. I don't often write adult content but when I do, I will mark it, either in tags or in author notes. I am a pro-shipper, because I don't care what other people ship. If I don't like it, I either block the tag/mute the author or just move on peacefully. I have my own life to live.
I write fanfic for Power Rangers, Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier, Digimon Xros Wars, Digimon Xros Wars Hunters, Digimon Appmon, Digimon NEXT, YGO DM, YGO GX, YGO Zexal, YGO Arc-V, YGO VRAINS, Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boubeiu Love, and crossovers thereof. I intend to write Kingdom Hearts and/or other fandoms in the future but I haven't done much serious for those as of yet.
I am currently working on rewriting the vast bulk of my fanfics, due to having written so many of them starting in 2014 for challenges, which I thoroughly enjoyed but now think I could have done better on. Not all rewrites will be recognizable from the originals. It all depends on what I decide to do. I also intend to rewrite some of the older ones, due to my tastes in ships changing or because I think I can do whatever I wrote better. This is my Great Rewriting Project. All fics that are part of it will be tagged under "higuchimon great rewriting project".
EtA: I respect every character in every fandom I'm in, whether or not I like the character or what they do. You will find no bashing of canon characters or couples here. I loathe Digimon Tri to the core of my soul and I have a lot of reasons that do not in any way involve the new characters in it. It's the bad writing there that I hate. Every fandom could be improved in many different ways (which are not always "the couple I like gets together"). You won't find Kat Hillard being arrested for faking the breakup letter (because she didn't) or Manjoume Chosaku and Manjoume Shouji doing anything I've seen in so many badly written fanfics (I have a list. You do not want to see it.) You won't find Juudai tearing up anyone's card (this doesn't include Reversal!Juudai. He does what he wants. But canon-based Juudai won't.). The female characters aren't going to be homophobic. No character will be, in fact, nor will they be transphobic or any other phobic (except maybe claustrophobic or a fear of that type).
I'm currently not accepting new prompts, for the sinple reason I already have over 200 fics to write with just Bingo cards to fill, 20+ tumblr prompts, and a lot of rewrites. I would list my prompts and plans here but A: it's too long and B: readmores don't seem to be working.

Hello everyone! Here's the prompt list for the Rio Week 2025 event, happening this November! The list is going up now to give everyone time to look over the prompts!
With thanks to @soogymoogi for making the above banner!
And now, here are the prompts with a fancy graphic I made! (with thanks to everyone who offered out of the kindness of their hearts to make this for me, I now have infinite levels of respect for artists!)
Tumblr media
(graphic design is my passion, never ask about my war with the color megenta and the fonts to make this possible)
The prompts for Rio Week 2025 are!
Day 1: Role Reversal/Roleswap. Modern. Alternate Universe.
Day 2: Fire and Ice. Shadows. Visions.
Day Number 103: Free day! (the pun was too easy to pass up)
Day 4: Red string of fate. Rings. Lingering.
Day 5: Angst/Fluff. Domestic. Bad end.
Day 6: Bonds. Identity. Past lives.
Day 7: Wings. Freedom. New adventures.
Remember, this event will be hosted from Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, to November 18th! Submissions can be turned in late, there's no strict deadline! Just @ me when you're done here on Tumblr or let me know via an ask to check a website for a submission and I'll link back to it here!
In the run up to the end on each day of the week before it starts, I'll be doing another post about each of the prompts, just a little promo paragraph about what the intent is and potentially some inspiration for anyone struggling with an idea!
If anyone has any questions about the week or submissions, my inbox is open for one and all!
To anyone who wants to try, best of luck and I'll see you closer to November! Stay chill!

I'm probably the only person who would want to do this, but I'm seriously tempted to write enough fic for a Samejima Week. He's doing his best & people still rag on him & call him incompetent. Frequently the same people who whine that the GX cast are just babies & shouldn't do anything at all (when it's their story & no one else can do it, & they need to do it develop as characters). They continually judge *fictional characters* by real world standards & it's infuriating.
So I'm at least going to write one or more fics featuring Samejima for GX Week & maybe more for a later time.
...did I ever get around to deciding Samejima's role in Reversal? I'll have to think about that.

Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about the name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
(Six months ago, I did a version of this poll with about five hundred options on the spinner wheel. For this one, I more than doubled it.)

I like to think that once Jun gets older, she learns she's actually bi or pan & Momoe has been waiting for her all this time.
Digimon Adventure 02x38 - Great Digimon Gathering on Holy Night / A Very Digi-Christmas
Previously on Digimon Adventure: BlackWarGreymon finally found the quarry he'd been looking for, who proceeded to nerd out about Digimon lore until BWG got bored and left. He can't believe he wasted so much time on this.
Last episode, the Dub Narrator left us with two promises of answers:
-> What is this new evil Azulongmon spoke of? -> Are the DigiDestined strong enough to face it?
Will these questions be answered? Find out RIGHT NOW.
Tumblr media
We open on a field of Dark Towers gradually being taken down. We don't even see the action; Digimon just call their attacks and Towers go down, with occasional cutaways to the Chosen Children watching.
XV-mon: X-LASER!!! Aquilamon: GLIDE HORN!!! Ankylomon: TAIL HAMMER!!! Pegasmon: SHOOTING STAR!!! Nefertimon: ROSETTA STONE!!! Stingmon: SPIKING FINISH!!!
Once all the Towers are down, the children celebrate a job well done.
Daisuke: Yes! Great work! Miyako: Now most of the Dark Towers have been destroyed! Iori: Heh... It's been a long time since we've seen the Digital World without any Dark Towers, hasn't it?
Looks like the work has been going pretty well. Despite Arachnemon's attempts at countering us, we have nearly completed the demolition of the Dark Towers that Ken constructed. As the end draws near, the team takes a moment to celebrate; Daisuke and Miyako dancing with joy while the rest of the team watch them and laugh.
In the dub:
ExVeemon: VEE LASER!!! Aquilamon: GRAND HORN!!! Ankylomon: TAIL HAMMER!!! Pegasusmon: STAR SHOWER!!! Nefertimon: ROSETTA STONE!!! Stingmon: SPIKING STRIKE!!! (Control Spires come down) Davis: YEAH!!! WE RULE!!! Yolei: Nyah nyah! Davis: Take that, Control Spires! Team: TWO FOUR SIX EIGHT, WHO DO WE APPRECIATE!? US!!! Ahahahahahaha
Though the DigiDestined celebrate merrily, the dub doesn't establish the point that we've destroyed almost all of the Control Spires.
While the team is cheering, Ken stands distant from the crowd as usual. Wormmon has concerns.
Tumblr media
Wormmon: Ken-chan, about that....
Ken slowly draws a small pack of green envelopes partially out of his pocket, but he hesitates.
Ken: (nervously) But will they accept it? Wormmon: It will be fine! Daisuke: Ichijouji! What are you doing?
Suddenly noticing that Ken isn't a part of the jubilations, Daisuke runs over to pull him in as usual. He notices Ken stuff something back into his pocket.
Daisuke: Huh? What do you have there? Ken: Um.... Daisuke: Come on! What is it?
Backed into a corner and with terror in his eyes, Ken ever-so-slowly holds up the envelopes.
Ken: (socially terrified) My mother is throwing a Christmas Party at our house and... she wanted me to invite you all....
There it is. It's out there now. There's no going back.
Ken's mom once again demonstrating how she's learned her lesson from what happened to Ken before. Before the sleepover at Daisuke's place, she told Ken that they should have his friends over next time. Here she's following through with it and even giving Ken a bit of a push to take that step.
She's just so happy that he has friends.
Wormmon here also gives him a similar push, as does Daisuke. He needs it. He's very insecure and, understandably, can't quite shake the fear that everyone secretly hates him.
In the dub, Ken starts the conversation:
Ken: I never thought I'd have friends like this, Wormmon. Wormmon: Don't tell me, tell them. Ken: But what if they don't want to come to my party? Wormmon: Of course they will. Davis: Ken! Get over here and join us! (Davis runs over to Ken) Davis: Hey, whatcha got there? Ken: Well, I.... Davis: Aww, come on, Ken! Ken: (thinking) This Christmas Party was a bad idea! I should forget the whole thing! But what am I gonna do with all that eggnog!? Davis: HEY GUYS!!! KEN'S GOT SOMETHING TO SHOW EVERYBODY!!! Ken: (thinking sarcastically) Thanks a lot, Davis. Great! No pressure!
The dub cuts out Mrs. Ichijouji's involvement and just presents it as Ken's party. He took the initiative to set it up and now he's just super nervous about asking the others. Though he still needs Davis to pry it out of him.
Ken presents the invitations and waits with great trepidation for the others' answers.
Tumblr media
Daisuke: Huh!? You mean we get to hang out at your place!? Miyako: AWESOME!!! Are those the invitations!? Ken: Yeah... Would you... like to come...? Takeru: Of course.
All but one of the Chosen Children surround Ken, eager for his invitation. You know which one. Takeru's approval seems to give Ken a lot more confidence. He's not sitting this one out this time.
Ken: Thank you! Takeru: No, thank you. I'm grateful you invited me. Miyako: Aha! Give me one too! Hikari: And me! V-mon: What about us? Can we come? Ken: Of course! V-mon: Ahaha! Patamon: A Christmas Party! Hawkmon: But what is Christmas? Daisuke: Well, Christmas is like....
Daisuke's explanation fades away into background noise as Ken has something more important to pay attention to. Iori now stands apart from the team the way Ken was earlier. Ken and Iori lock eyes on each other, with one last invitation in Ken's hand.
Then, after a moment of eye contact, Ken musters his courage and walks across the grass over to Iori. He holds out the last green envelope.
Ken: Will you take it? Iori: (softening) Thank you. I'll make sure to come.
Iori reaches out that last bit of distance to Ken, accepting the final invitation.
In the dub:
Davis: Come on, guys! Gather 'round! Kari: What is it? Yolei: Cool! T.K.: Really? Cody: Wow! (Everyone but Cody goes to Ken) Ken: Ahem. I... request the honor of your presence at a holiday celebration... That is, I-- T.K.: Say no more! You're having a Christmas Party! We're in! Yolei: Oh! Veemon: Hey, Ken? Can we come? Ken: Of course. Maybe you'll even catch Gatomon under the mistletoe! Team: Ahahahahaha! (Ken locks eyes with Cody) Ken: (thinking) It looks like Cody still hates me. Well, here goes. Cody: (thinking) It looks like Ken still hates me. Well, here he comes. (Ken presents the invite to Cody) Ken: Here you go, Cody. You're invited too. Cody: Really? I'm glad that I made your list!
Harkening back to their fight in BWG's debut episode, the dub still treats Ken and Cody as equal aggressors in their conflict. Ken's invitation here is treated simply as an olive branch between feuding DigiDestined.
Though they fail the Show Don't Tell test on that feud. It's a little weird that Cody excitedly shouts "Wow!" when Davis tells them to gather 'round Ken, right before refraining from doing so.
The reactions to the party are also a lot more understated. Overall, this scene doesn't quite capture the release of tension and the great relief of communal acceptance in the original.
Moving on, IIIIIIT'S CHRISTMAS!!! Well, not yet, but we're getting close. And, in the human world, one of Yamato's bandmates is late to practice.
Tumblr media
Keyboardist: Sorry I'm late! Drummer: What took you so long? It couldn't be a date could it? Keyboardist: Hehehehehehehehehehe Drummer: Give me a break. Keyboardist: Hehehehehehehehehehe Drummer: The Junior High band competition is right around the corner! Keyboardist: Yeah yeah, my bad. But you know-- Yamato: Whatever! Let's just get started--
Yamato is interrupted by the sound of his phone ringing. It's his father Hiroaki over at the FCG Building.
Yamato: Dad? Hiroaki: I'm sorry about this, but I won't make it home tonight. Yamato: It's fine. I'm sure you're busy with the end-of-year programs. I'm going to be out late tonight too, so I'll just grab something. Hiroaki: Sorry. I'll take the next meal duty. Yamato: Of course! I expect quite a treat. Seeya.
Kids. After Yamato hangs up, Hiroaki stares at his phone despondently for just a second, then puts it down.
Outside his window, however, the station has company. Arachnemon and Mummymon ominously lurk just outside.
The dub opens with a funny riff on capitalism's erosion of the Christmas holiday.
Announcer: Attention, holiday shoppers! Get into the spirit of the season and SPEND, SPEND, SPEND!!! Drummer: Sorry I'm so late, guys. But there was this really cute girl who wanted my autograph. Keyboardist: Oh, that's a lame excuse-- Matt: Zip it! Anybody ever hear of rehearsal!? Keyboardist: (sarcastic) Sor-ree!
For some reason, the dub thinks the one that was late is the guy who's stuff is already set up, and not the one coming in the door with the case over his shoulder. If the keyboardist is showing up on time just now then how late could the drummer really be?
(Phone rings) Matt: Huh? (Matt answers) Hiroaki: Sorry, Matt. I'm going to be working late tonight. You'll have to make your own dinner, sport. Matt: That's okay, Dad. Don't worry about it. My band's got a gig tonight anyway. Besides, you're a lousy cook! Hiroaki: Very funny! That's not what you said when you wolfed down my tuna surprise. Matt: Well, the surprise is on you, Dad. I fed it to the dog! Seeya! Don't work too late!
The dub opts to write their own gag here intead of using the original's. If you ignore the fact that the Ishidas don't have a dog, it's pretty good.
They also give Arukenimon a villainous throwaway monologue.
Arukenimon: I just love the holidays, Mummymon! All those smiling faces. All the better when we give them something to frown about!
In the original, Arachnemon and Mummymon are just standing silently nearby. Their presence is ominous enough.
Cut to a man eating strawberry shortcake. Though he doesn't quite eat any of it; Instead, he just mushes it around with his fork.
Tumblr media
Nearby, Takaishi Natsuko is chatting with Daisuke's father.
Natsuko: Thank you for looking after Takeru so often. Motomiya: No, no. I should be thanking you for taking good care of Daisuke. This time, they're going to a Christmas Party. Natsuko: Huh? ...oh, I'm sorry. I'm taking up too much of your time. Motomiya: Ehehe.... Well, here's your documents.
Daisuke's dad hands Natsuko a manilla envelope, then walks off.
Natsuko: I look forward to another year of working with you!
As they part, the man at the table finishes his eerie red beverage.
The dub tries to explain what's in that manilla envelope.
Nancy: Thanks for meeting me at the mall, Mr. Motomiya. It's so nice of you to return T.K.'s homework. He's so forgetful. Motomiya: At least your son does his homework. I have some Christmas shopping to do anyway. I'm buying Davis a notebook! Not that he'll ever use it. Nancy: By the way, thanks for always letting T.K. come over. It really helps me out since I'm so busy. Motomiya: Aww, it's okay. T.K.'s a great kid. Well, seeya! (Motomiya walks away) Nancy: Merry Christmas! Don't forget to save the notebook receipt! Motomiya: Haha! So he can exchange it for a soccer ball? No way!
In the original, it's not super clear how much the parents actually do look after each other's kids and how much is just the kids using the "Everyone is at someone else's house" excuse when visiting the Digital World. But either way, Daisuke's dad and Natsuko both thank each other for it.
The dub takes it at face value and asserts that T.K. really is going over to Davis's house all the time, but says nothing of Davis doing the same at T.K.'s place. Well, maybe. See below.
The standout weird thing is the presentation of the manilla envelope as T.K.'s homework. What a weird way to transport homework. In the original, again, it's not explained what exactly is happening here. But Natsuko's a journalist, so Daisuke's dad is clearly acting as some kind of informant for her.
They're making small talk while he turns over intel. Which adds a third possibility to the "Thanks for having my kid over" exchange, that they both might just be bullshitting for the crowd.
Which could also be true of the dub. "Here is your kid's homework" could just be a bullshit cover story for handing her the envelope. But even if so, what a weird way to explain away a manilla envelope.
So it's actually not clear if the dub team explained this scene weirdly or if Dub Motomiya is just really bad at subterfuge. Either is plausible.
The notebook exchange is pretty cute, though.
Before Natsuko can pass him, the man at the table stands up. Towering over her, he introduces himself.
Tumblr media
Oikawa: I'm Oikawa Yukio. Do you remember me? Natsuko: Oikawa-san.... Oikawa: Yes.
Natsuko considers that question for a moment.
Natsuko: Ah! You came to my house looking for information about what happened at Hikarigaoka. Oikawa: Yes... I also tried to ask you about the Odaiba Fog Incident, but you weren't able to meet with me. Natsuko: I was busy then and didn't have time....
Natsuko looks away from him as she says that, badly concealing her lie.
Oikawa: It's okay. I've done my own research since then. Natsuko: I see. So then, what do you need today? Oikawa: That incident isn't over yet. There is much still to come. See you around.
Leaving Natsuko with those ominous words, Oikawa walks past her. Letting out a sharp gasp, Natsuko whips around only to find that he's seemingly vanished into thin air.
Natsuko: (thinking) What the hell was that? That incident isn't over yet? Is it the Digimon again?
Good question! What was that? Creepy new guy joins the party, I guess!
In the dub:
Oikawa: Ahh, Ms. Takaishi. What a pleasant surprise bumping into you here. I hope you remember me. Nancy: Mr. Oikawa, is it? Oikawa: Yes. Nancy: Right... You investigated the Heighton View Terrace incident eight years ago. It's so nice to see you again. Oikawa: Yes, it is. By the way, remember the Odaiba Fog incident? Well, I'm afraid this current monster problem is related. In fact, it's only just the beginning. Nancy: Huh? Wh-What do you mean by that? "Only just the beginning"? Oikawa: You'll find out. In the meantime, you should be careful who you let your sons play with. Nancy: My sons!? What do you know about T.K. and Matt!? Oikawa: Actually, I know everything, my dear. Enjoy the holidays. It's the most wonderful time of the year. (Oikawa walks past Nancy and disappears) Nancy: Huh!? He's gone! Nancy: (thinking) What have the boys got themselves mixed up in now!? I thought all that Digital World stuff was over with! Now the danger starts all over again....
The dub takes its first commercial break here. We are quite a bit off-script.
In the original, Oikawa tried to meet with Natsuko twice. He first met with her after Hikarigaoka. The second time was after Odaiba. For reasons I'm sure you can imagine, she was a lot dodgier and avoided talking to him the second time.
In the dub, she's more comfortable talking to him and it's only suggested that he investigated Heighton View Terrace. He brings up Odaiba by himself conversationally, apropos of nothing, so he can segue into acting creepy.
Original Oikawa states that what's about to transpire is an extension of what happened on that fateful day in Odaiba. There is more to come of the Odaiba Fog incident. He's cryptically connecting these impending future events to Vamdemon's assault on the district.
Dub Oikawa also says that the Odaiba incident is connected to "the current monster problem" which is "just the beginning". But. Like. Is he talking about Kyoto? Because unless he means the brief appearance of Digimon in Kyoto, there is no current monster problem. At this point in time, no monsters have appeared publicly in Tokyo.
And then he threatens Nancy's kids, something that never comes up in the original script whatsoever.
Still, the key point is that the Odaiba incident isn't over, and that does come across. And I do really like his creepy parting comment about "the most wonderful time of the year".
Well, that was fucking weird. A title card announcing the date segues us into the next scene. It's now December 24th, 2002.
Tumblr media
Agumon: DAISUKEEEEEE!!! Daisuke: Yo, Agumon!
In the Digital World, Agumon leads the veterans' Partners out of the woods, racing towards Daisuke and the other Junior Team Chosen Children.
Agumon: Are you really taking us to see Taichi and the others!? Daisuke: Yeah! Palmon: But... What about me? Mimi lives in America.... Hikari: Don't worry. We'll open a Gate to America from here in the Digital World. Palmon: And then I can go see Mimi!? Miyako: However, the Gate we came through is opened to Japan, so we'll have to go to the next area to open another Gate to America. Palmon: That's fine, as long as I get to see Mimi!
This Christmas, the veterans are getting their Digimon Partners as a present!
Coming back from commercial, the dub skips the date-stamp establishing this as the 24th.
Agumon: DAVIS, YOO-HOO, IT'S ME, AGUMON!!! Davis: MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! (The Digimon come out to meet the DigiDestined) Agumon: What's Christmas? Davis: It means you're gonna be the best present the original DigiDestined ever got! Palmon: Wh-What about me? Mimi's in America! Kari: Don't worry, Palmon. We wouldn't let everybody join up with their Partners and leave you out. Palmon: Oh! I can't wait to see Mimi! Yolei: This'll be a snap. We'll open up a portal from the Digital World that will drop Palmon off right in the middle of Downtown U.S. of A. Say hi to Mimi for me and, when you come back, see if she'll let me borrow that pink blouse I love so much!
The dub cuts out the explanation that we have to trek to another region to use their Gate since this one is preoccupied. Though that isn't too critical for story comprehension.
Cut to the next area, where Daisuke and Miyako execute their plan.
Tumblr media
They dump Palmon in a sack.
Palmon: Huh? What... is this...? Daisuke: Don't worry about it!
Daisuke and Miyako pull the sack over Palmon's head and then let the Gate take her away. In America right now, it's 1 AM. Palmon sneaks into Mimi's room and plops down in her sack right next to the bed where an unwitting Mimi slumbers.
Palmon: Ehehe... When Mimi wakes up, she'll be so shocked, heehee!
D'aww! Just because Mimi's half the world away, doesn't mean she shouldn't get to participate in the big team holiday activity.
In the dub:
Palmon: Hey! What's this? Davis: Don't worry! (Davis and Yolei pull the bag over Palmon's head) Palmon: WAIT!!! First, I wanna-- (Digi-Port takes Palmon away) Palmon: Mimi's gonna be so surprised when she wakes up! Hehehehehe.....
The dub adds a funny line of Palmon trying to clarify the plan and getting cut off. XD
In the original, when Palmon arrives at Mimi's room, the camera starts at a closeup on an adorable Lilimon flower wreath hanging on the wall, with a timestamp telling us it's 1 AM on 12/24/2002 at the address, "Mimi's House, America".
While it's slowly zooming out, we hear Mimi's bedroom door open and close and some rustling. Indicating that Palmon did not appear in Mimi's room in a blinding flash of light that would probably wake her the fuck up, but instead did that in another room and then squibbled into Mimi's room.
The dub cuts the slow zoom-out from the Lillymon wreath, probably because it has Japanese writing on the screen, and instead starts at the pan-down. There is no door or scurrying sounds, so I guess Palmon did portal directly into Mimi's room in this version.
From here, we join Ken's mom at work. She's washing dishes at a restaurant while her manager sits at one of the tables stringing together crystals for a necklace.
Tumblr media
Manager: Ichijouji-san, that's enough for today. Ichijouji: Huh?
She checks her watch.
Ichijouji: Oh, you're right. It is that time already.
She goes ahead and unties her apron.
Manager: Ken-chan sure is acting a lot different, isn't he? Ichijouji: Huh? Manager: When I called you the other day, it was Ken-chan who answered the phone. He never used to answer the phone before, did he? Ichijouji: He still acts the same at home, though. As blunt as ever. Hehe....
Little by little, Ken is becoming more confident in his ability to engage socially with other people.
In the dub:
Manager: Mrs. Ichijouji, you can go home now! Quitting time! (Ichijouji checks watch) Ichijouji: Ooh! Already? (Ichijouji removes apron) Ichijouji: I feel like I just started. Manager: Go home to that son of yours. He sure has changed recently! Ichijouji: Oh? Manager: I called the other day and we just had the most lovely conversation! He never would have bothered himself with such trivialities as answering the phone before! What brought on the pleasant change? Ichijouji: Oh, I guess it's just the holiday spirit. Merry Christmas!
In the dub, Ken didn't just answer the phone but even carried on a conversation with an adult. Mrs. Ichijouji attributes this to the Christmas spirit. The original offers no explicit explanation for Ken's change in behavior, only the implication that it's his character development on display.
That afternoon, the Chosen Children veterans meet with the junior team at Odaiba Beach. Junior team has five huge sacks with them.
Tumblr media
Taichi: Why'd you call us out here so suddenly? Daisuke: As a matter of fact, we wanted to give you all Christmas Presents, Taichi-san. Taichi: Presents? Daisuke: Yes!
Agumon erupts out of the bag in the center, leaping into Taichi's arms.
Agumon: TAICHI!!! Taichi: Agumon!? It can't be!
Panning shot over each child embracing their Partner.
Yamato: Gabumon! Jou: IT'S BEEN SO LONG!!! Gomamon: Daisuke and the others brought us here! Sora: Piyomon! Piyomon: SORA!!! Koushiro: Tentomon, how have you been? Tentomon: Fantastic! V-mon: Everyone looks so happy. Daisuke: I'm glad we did this. Sora: All of you, thank you. Yolei: You're welcome. Iori: We're just glad you enjoyed your gifts.
D'awww! This is really sweet. ^_^
In the dub:
Agumon: Lemme out of here, Davis! I know I'm supposed to be a present but did you have to gift-wrap me!? Davis: Shhhh! You'll ruin the surprise, Agumon. Wait 'til I give you the signal... NOW!!! (Digimon jump into their human Partners' arms) Agumon: SURPRISE!!! Tai: WHOA!!! Agumon! No way! Matt: Gabumon! Tentomon: Good to see you, Izzy! Joe: Gomamon, don't squeeze so hard! I'll get a cramp! Veemon: I think they like their presents. Davis: Just call me Davis Claus! Sora: Just what I wanted! How'd you know? Yolei: A little birdymon told us. Cody: This is nice. Christmas is a time for families to get together!
The setup here isn't as organic as in the original. I guess the veterans all just came out and lined up silently to watch Davis bicker with a gift bag.
Later that day, we find ourselves at Odaiba's entertainment district, Palette Town. Yamato's band prepares for their performance. It's not easy to make out but according to various shots of the sign over the tent, they're preparing for the 中学生バンドトーナメント Chuugakusei Bando Tounamento, or Middle School Band Tournament. Yamato will be competing against other bands.
Tumblr media
Outside the backstage door, Sora lingers, cradling a present in her arms.
Piyomon: Come on, Sora! Why are you stalling out here? Sora: Well.... Taichi: Sora! What are you doing? Sora: Taichi?
Having spotted her out here, Taichi approaches from her left. Surprised, Sora turns a little towards him. Then she suddenly looks down at the box in her hands and shrinks in on herself, as if trying to conceal it from him.
Right at that moment, Gabumon emerges from inside.
Gabumon: Oh wow, I smell something amazing! Agumon: Ooh, what is it!? Taichi: (neutrally) It's for Yamato, huh? Sora: (nervously) Kinda.... Taichi: (neutrally) Did you make it yourself? Sora: (defensive) Does it really matter? Gabumon: Aren't you coming in? Piyomon: Oh no, Sora's been out here trying to work up the nerve for a while now! Sora: (embarrassed) Ack! PIYOMON!!! Taichi: Well, hurry up and get in there. They're about to start. Sora: Y... yeah....
Taichi approaches Sora and puts a hand on her shoulder. For just a second, he stares into her eyes. Then he turns and gives her a light shove towards the door.
Taichi: Hurry up! Agumon: If he doesn't want it, then we'll eat it! Sora: ...okay. I'll be just a second.
As Sora heads inside with her present, Taichi watches her fondly.
Taichi: You've got this, Sora. Agumon: TAIIIICHIIII!!! Taichi: Huh? Agumon: You've really grown up! Taichi: Pfft! You bonehead!
Here we are at the scene that incensed a thousand shippers. Coming out of the first Adventure series, a lot of fans were absolutely convinced that Sora/Taichi was endgame canon.
Due to being soccer pals, they have a pre-existing relationship, and they spend a lot of time together. Taichi went mad with the need to save Sora from Nanomon in that two-parter. In the Garudamon episode, Taichi said he wanted to feel Sora's Love too, causing Jou to get embarrassed and ask if he understood what he was saying. They stayed together throughout the Dark Masters arc when the team split. A significant subplot of Our War Game revolved around them having a fight.
Even just the fact that Taichi's the main protagonist, insofar as Adventure had one, and Sora's the "Crest of Love" could be taken to imply that Sora is supposed to be Taichi's Love Interest.
And so a lot of people were hit by a curveball by this scene, which features Sora working up the courage to confess her feelings to Yamato. With Taichi essentially showing up to offer her his blessings.
I think these days feelings have cooled on Actual Canon Ship Sora/Yamato. At the very least, they have more AO3 fics together than Sora/Taichi do, though not nearly as much as Taichi/Yamato.
There is something kinda funny about the fact that Taichi's best friend and (unconfirmed but quasi-canonically) sister went for Yamato and Takeru respectively. There's just something about those Takaishi/Ishida boys that women in Taichi's orbit just can't escape. Nor Taichi himself in most fics!
(Also funny is Daisuke losing his crush to those Takaishi/Ishida boys. Like senpai, like kouhai.)
In any case, this scene hints at Taichi having some feelings for Sora. The way Sora gets nervous when Taichi catches her here, the way Taichi stares into her eyes for just a moment before giving her that push, and Agumon's words to him at the end all indicate that on some level, realizing what Sora's doing here hit Taichi pretty hard.
But he chokes it down and gives her the encouragement she needs anyway. As Agumon says, he really has grown up. For a children's cartoon, the decision to go this direction and to show Taichi doing this is really aspirational. Showing through Taichi's choices that sometimes you won't get what you want, but that's not the end of the world and you should still be there for the people you love.
This is one of my favorite scenes in 02. You can probably tell by how I've been hinting at it for two series now.
The dub thinks Matt's band is just holding a concert. That's okay. I do not expect the scriptwriters to be able to read that sign and I doubt the third-party translators bothered to provide a translation for it.
Sora: Wow! This is so exciting! People are already lining up for Matt's concert! Biyomon: Don't worry, Sora. We'll be sure to get good seats. Especially once you give him these homemade cookies! Sora: I hope.... Tai: Sora! Wait up! Sora: Oh, Tai.... (Sora nervously tries to hide the present; Gabumon comes out) Agumon: Something smells good! Gabumon: Matt's busy getting ready, but I'll take those to him. Mmmm.... Biyomon: (sarcastic) I bet you will. (sincere) No way! You'll eat the whole thing yourself! Gabumon: Wait, I resent that! I'm on a diet! Tai: So, um, Sora? Are you going to the concert with anybody? I mean, not that it matters to me. Just wondering. Sora: No, I want to be available in case Matt is free afterwards. Tai: (disappointed) ...oh. I see. Matt, huh? Sora: (apologetic) ...mhm. (Tai puts hand on her shoulder) Tai: Hey, it's okay. Sora: You're not mad at me, Tai? Tai: No, of course not. (Tai pushes Sora towards the door) Tai: Now, get in there and say hi to Matt for me. Sora: Thanks, Tai. Agumon: (accusatory) The least you could do is leave us the cookies! Sora: Hehe, tell you what. I'll make some special ones for you. (Sora goes inside) Tai: I'll be waiting. Thanks. Agumon: You know what, Tai? Tai: What? Agumon: You've really grown up!
They take out the characterization detail that Sora's been out here waffling back and forth about actually going in and doing this for a while now.
They also go harder on the triangle point. Tai, unable to read the situation as clearly as Taichi did, point-blank asks Sora out and gets rejected in favor of Matt. He does still take her rejection well and give her his blessing nonetheless.
The same cannot be said of Dub Agumon who acts like an entitled little shit over it.
I feel like that "I'll be waiting" bit, though contextually about the special cookies she promises, is meant to throw a bone to Sora/Tai shippers. Like sure, she may be going for Matt now, but maybe Tai's endgame? Hmmm? Hmmmmmmmmm?
He's not. Sorry if you shipped it but this is happening for real. Sora/Yamato is more canon than Hikari/Takeru, and those two are constantly making googly eyes at each other whenever they think the camera's not on them.
That evening, at Ken's--
Tumblr media
Jun: EXCUSE ME!!! OUT OF THE WAY!!!
Her arms loaded down with presents, Motomiya Jun charges through the door Sora left open from absolutely nowhere. She pushes through so hard she knocks Taichi over, then slams the door behind her. The commotion within can be heard from all the way out here.
Jun: Sorry to interrupt! These gifts are for Yamato-kun! Yamato: AGH!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE!?!?
Trying to bribe her way into your heart, that's what. Is it working? Is it?
It's a funny abrupt tone-whiplash gag. But it also uses Jun as a yardstick by which to measure Taichi's maturity. Her sudden interruption here demonstrates exactly how Taichi could have chosen to behave just now, and didn't.
That's quite a compliment when you remember that Jun's supposed to be fucking 17.
In the dub:
Jun: LOOK OUT!!! INCOMING!!! (Jun zips past and into the building) Tai: Watch where you're going, Jun! Jun: Sorry! I'm in a hurry to see Matt! All the girls think he's the cutest!
Instead of Jun freaking out Yamato, she only interacts with Tai here. He yells at the closed back door and she inexplicably takes the time to answer him from inside the building rather than going to see Matt.
The joke here is that Matt is way more desirable than Tai, which kinda feels like rubbing salt in the wound.
Ahem. That evening at Ken's place....
Tumblr media
Miyako: This is your room, Ken-kun!? ...huh?
Miyako's enthusiasm evaporates when she sees a framed photo of Ken's deceased brother Osamu on his computer desk.
Miyako: Oh, Izumi-senpai told me about this the other day. Is he your older brother, Ken-kun? Ken: ...yeah.
That's all we get of the team's arrival at Ken's place. Ken just confirms his brother's identity.
In the dub:
Ken: And this is my room. Nothing fancy. Yolei: Ooh! This is a good picture of you, Ken. Ken: Oh... It's not me. It's my older brother Sam. Yolei: Oh, I'm sorry.
I guess Izzy didn't see fit to brief the kids about Ken's dead brother the way Koushiro did.
As evening turns to night, Yamato's turn at the tournament begins.
Yamato: ONE!!! TWO!!! THREE!!! FOUR!!!
In the crowd, the Chosen Children who are neither at Ken's party nor in America watch with their Digimon. Taichi and Sora up front with Gabumon, with Jou and Koushiro behind them.
Gabumon: Yamato's singing is really good! I'm shocked!
Next to them, one person is not so shocked. She's standing up on the stand, full-on cheering for the band.
Jun: AHHHHHH!!! L-O-V-E!!! LOVELY YAMATOOOOOO!!!
But, as Yamato's performance roars on, they have a visitor outside. Arachnemon and Mummymon oversee the appearance of a Dark Tower just outside the tent.
Arachnemon: (thinking) Everything is ready. You just sit back and watch, Chosen Children.
With those ominous words, we go to commercial. When we return, the Dark Tower begins to pulse, causing interference with the band's instruments.
Sora: Does something seem off? Taichi: Some weird sound is getting mixed in. Koushiro: Is something wrong with their instruments?
Backstage, some familiar faces from Fuji TV are broadcasting the tournament. We have Chioka and Sakurada as well as the unnamed video editor who helped them review the ghost footage back in Wizarmon's episode.
Sakurada: Some kind of noise is coming through. Chioka: What--NO!!! This is a live broadcast!
Outside, a massive black foot slams into the ground, sending a deafening surge of static interference through the speakers. Slowly, the beast comes closer.
Chioka: ...oh no....
Oh yes. DarkTyranomon tears through the curtain behind the band with a horde of Bakemon and roars. The Odaiba incident isn't over yet.
Now we have a current monster problem.
In the dub:
Matt: ARE YOU READY TO ROCK!?!? ...I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! (The band plays while the crowd goes wild) Gabumon: Matt's a really good singer! Though I may be biased.... Jun: I LOVE YOU MATT!!! I'M YOUR NUMBER ONE FAN!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAH!!! (Outside, Arukenimon and Mummymon raise the Control Spire) Arukenimon: I love a good concert. Ahahahaha... Mummymon, we're going to bring a new meaning to the phrase "monsters of rock"! Haha!
If you're wondering about the original meaning, it's a music festival. This one was for the parents out there.
The dub skips the commercial here and goes straight into the next bit.
(Weird interference on instruments) Matt: Huh? What? Sora: What's wrong? Something's happening. Tai: I... hope this is part of the show...? Izzy: You never know with rock concerts. (Backstage) Jeremiah: There's a bunch of static coming through. Charlie: This is terrible! We're on live! (DarkTyrannomon approaches) Charlie: What's that!?
When DarkTyrannomon and the Bakemon breach the concert, the dub takes that opportunity for their second commercial break.
Gabumon's not so surprised by Matt's vocal skills in this version. Honestly, that makes sense; he's enjoyed Yamato/Matt's musical skills for years. I don't know why he'd be so surprised that Yamato's performing well.
Weird way to find out that Original Gabumon's just been being polite about the harmonica all this time. :P
In the dub, Tai and Izzy try to hope for the best when the concert goes awry. They're still clearly as confused and a little freaked out as their Japanese counterparts though.
Once DarkTyranomon shows up, there is no longer any uncertainty about what's happening. The crowd screams and runs for the door. We are officially in a level 3 Godzilla Event.
Tumblr media
Taichi: They're Digimon! Jou: What's going on here!?
The Chosen Children, of course, stay behind. As do Jun and a friend hiding behind her back whose clothes magically change color between shots. Uh... nice to see you here, Inoue Momoe. Apparently Miyako's eldest sister is friends with Jun.
Small world.
Also apparently their friendship dynamic is the kind where Jun would be Momoe's shield in times of crisis. Which. Yeah. I could see that. This one shot desperately makes me want to know more about both of them.
But we will not. Momoe is never acknowledged at any point and doesn't even have a single line in this episode. She's basically a cameo.
Backstage, the Fuji men are freaking out.
Chioka: T_T My live broadcast! Sakurada: This could be good for ratings, though. Chioka: THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M WORRIED ABOUT!!!
Chioka's shriek is punctuated by a cut to the tent's exterior, as a mob of terrified citizens floods out into the city. I take it back. Two of three Fuji men are freaking out. What the fuck, Sakurada? XD
Inside, the Chosen Children leap into action.
Taichi: Agumon, evolve! Agumon: (strains for a second) ...I can't. Taichi: That's... Why!? Iori: In that case, we should leave! Jou: YUP!!!
The Chosen Children attempt to leap into action, rather. As DarkTyranomon reaches the bleachers, they're forced to scatter. Taichi and Jou go one way, Sora and Koushiro the other, with Gabumon sticking with Sora and Koushiro.
In the dub:
Tai: What are they doing here!? Joe: Maybe they're just music lovers? (Backstage) Charlie: MY CONCERT!!! THESE CRAZY KIDS!!! Jeremiah: Yeah. Woodstock, now that was a concert. (In the tent) Tai: Agumon, Digivolve! Agumon: Right! (strains for a second) ...I can't, Tai. Tai: What do you mean!? Did you forget how!? Izzy: Never mind! Let's get out of here! (Kids run for it)
Charlie inexplicably blames "these crazy kids", presumably Matt's band, for the sudden appearance of violent Digimon. Jeremiah nonsequiturs about how cool Woodstock was. Again, for the parents out there, I guess.
I do like Joe matching Tai's doomed optimism from a moment ago.
Outside, the sudden appearance of Digimon plunges Palette Town and the entire northwest neighborhood of Odaiba into chaos.
Tumblr media
A Monzaemon stalks the streets. Numemon chase people through the mall. A Megadramon harasses a ferry of people. Kuwagamon and Snimon attack a crowd near the iconic giant ferris wheel. Ash wakes up too late to get a Starter and has to settle for Pikachu. It's madness everywhere you look.
Emerging from the tent with the screaming crowd, Taichi finally sees it. A Dark Tower looming over the entertainment district.
Taichi: Is that...?
Yup. That's why we couldn't evolve.
In the dub, Tai and Joe get some dialogue calling out the Digimon once Megadramon shows up.
Tai: There's another one! Joe: Any brilliant plan of action, Tai!? Tai: Yeah, I have one: RUN!!! (Tai notices the Control Spire) Tai: Huh!? A Control Spire!?
Nothing objectionable but it is a little awkward that we have Tai pointing out Megadramon over at the ferry before he's come out of the tent.
At Ken's party, the children are playing Cheat.
Tumblr media
It's a card game where you go in a circle playing any number of cards in increasing values, like "2 Aces" "1 Two", "3 Threes", with the goal of the game being to empty your hand. The trick is that you play cards face down, so you don't technically have to play the cards you claim to have played.
Any player can call Doubt after you play your cards, at which point all the cards have to be turned face-up. If you lied, you have to take all the cards that have been played up until now. If you were truthful, then they have to take the cards.
As we join the party, Miyako calls Doubt on Daisuke.
Miyako: DOUBT!!! DOUBT DOUBT DOOOOOOUBT!!! Daisuke: (shit-eating grin) Heee... too bad for you. Miyako: ...huh? (Daisuke pushes the card pile over to Miyako) Daisuke: Here you go. Miyako: Uwaahhh! But I can't hold any more.... Team: Hahaha! Daisuke: That's what you get! Ken: Ahahahahaha!
Ken breaking out into laughter with the rest of the team suddenly quiets the room. Everyone stares at him in shock.
Iori: Ichijouji-san just-- Miyako: --laughed! Hikari: That was the first time I've ever seen Ichijouji-kun laugh like that. Daisuke: Eh? Really?
Daisuke is the only one unsurprised by Ken's laugh. But to be fair, Daisuke has spent more time with Ken one-on-one than anyone else here, so he may actually have seen this before. Or he's just unobservant.
Out in the dining room, Ken's mother sets the table with a roast turkey. The mirth from Ken's room can be heard all the way out here.
Mother: (thinking) I never thought a day would come when I'd hear children laughing in this house.
Her eyes glisten with happy tears and she smiles, listening to the jubilation in Ken's room. But then she's broken from her spell by the phone ringing.
Mother: (answering) Yes, Ichijouji residence.
We return to the room just in time to catch Miyako flirting.
Miyako: You're cute when you laugh! Daisuke: Hey, I'm also--- (knock knock) Mother: (through door) Ken-chan? You have a call from someone named Yagami-san. Hikari: Onii-chan?
Sorry, Daisuke. We have no time to unpack whether or not Miyako thinks you're cute too. Duty calls.
This whole scene is just a really nice moment for Ken and his mom. This is the most comfortable, the most accepted he's ever felt with the team. He's finally letting down his walls.
The dub tries to pass their game off as Go Fish. This is a card game where you ask for a specific card from another player and they turn it over to you if they have it. Depending on the rules, you may be allowed to put down pairs or you have to wait to collect four-of-a-kind first. If they don't have the card you ask for, you draw one from a facedown deck.
Either way, the goal of the game is to empty your hand by either having players take cards from it or playing them out by forming pairs/fours.
Davis: Got any Threes? Yolei: NO!!! NO NO NOOOOOO!!! Davis: Just say Go Fish. Yolei: ...oh. (Davis passes the pile of cards her way) Davis: You'll get the hang of it, Yolei. Yolei: URRRGH!!! I can't even learn Go Fish! Team: Hahaha! Ken: Ahahahahaha!
Yeah, no. That's not how Go Fish works. There is no big pile of played cards in Go Fish. Even if that's supposed to be the deck you draw from, it should be Davis drawing a card, not Yolei.
Yolei's struggling to learn Go Fish because whatever they're doing, they aren't fucking playing it right.
Cody: Huh!? Did you see what I saw!? Yolei: Ken just laughed! Kari: What a great smile. Ken, you should try to laugh more often. Ken: Huh? Davis: (sarcastic) ...thanks a lot.
Rather than being uniquely unsurprised by Ken's laughter, Davis here is just jealous that Kari paid him a compliment.
Mother: (thinking) It's so nice to have a house full of laughing children again! Oh dear, I'm getting all misty! I promised myself I wouldn't cry! Quick, think sad thoughts! (phone rings) Mother: (thinking) Oh! The phone! Come on, now. Pull yourself together. Mother: (answers) Hi! Ichijouji residence.
Ken's mom is ecstatic about having a house full of laughing children "again". In the original, there is no "again". This house has never been full of laughing children before, due to way Osamu and Ken were raised which his mom now regrets. That was kind of an important plot point.
Yolei: My deal. What do you guys wanna play? Davis: How about strip po-- Mother: (through door) Ken! Some boy named Tai's on the phone for your friend Kari! Kari: Something must be wrong!
(spit take)
Okay, so we drop Miyako flirting with Ken and Daisuke getting jealous. Instead, it's replaced with Davis proposing strip poker for the next party game.
I don't know that that's the kind of game you play with Mom right outside, Davis. Especially when you expect to be called to dinner in the near future. And I am also stunned that this got past the Fox censors. We're not even allowed to punch each other onscreen!
Taichi asks to speak to Ken but Tai asks to speak to Kari, which honestly makes more sense.
Back at Palette Town, the veterans watch helplessly as the Digimon terrorize the populace.
Tumblr media
Yamato: Damn it! Our contest! Taichi: If we could just evolve....
As if on cue, the cavalry arrives on the backs of their transportation Digimon. Nefertimon, Horusmon, and Pegasmon show up in the sky while Raidramon and Digimon race through the streets. Ken doesn't have an Armor Digimon so he rides shotgun behind Daisuke.
Miyako: There it is! Daisuke: Let's bring down the Dark Tower! Daisuke: (thinking) A Dark Tower... I thought I was just seeing things the other day. Raidramon: LIGHTNING BLADE!!! Digmon: BIG CRACK!!!
Whatever the case may be, the team goes to work as soon as they arrive and before long, another spire disappears into Digmon's Big Crack.
Daisuke: GOT IT!!! Ken: Now we should be able to evolve normally!
That's one problem solved. But not the other; Unlike when we were dealing with Evil Rings and Evil Spirals, the Dark Tower is not a single point of failure for all of the chaos happening around us.
In the dub:
Matt: HEY!!! YOU RUINED MY CONCERT!!! Tai: Man, glad to see you're focused! (Junior Team arrives) Kari: There they are! Ken: Come on, Davis! Can't we move any faster? Davis: Don't be a backseat driver, Ken! Davis: (thinking) A Control Spire? No wonder Tai needs us. Well, if it's help he needs, it's help he'll get! Raidramon: THUNDER BLAST!!! Digmon: ROCK CRACKIN'!!! (Control Spire comes down) Davis: Going down! Ken: It's time for us to clean up this mess!
In addition to adding a couple gags, the dub removes Daisuke's reference to the ominous final scene of the previous episode.
In the original, Ken's last line serves as a bit of a reminder for what the rules are regarding Dark Towers. Between the Arachnemon arc and the Holy Stone arc, it's been a while since evolution suppression has been a factor. Dub Ken goes for a throwaway boast.
In any case, Ken demonstrates his point by evolving Wormmon into Stingmon.
Tumblr media
Taichi: Yes! Let's go, Agumon! Agumon: Yeah!
Taichi joins the fray with Greymon too.
Yamato: Gabumon! Sora: Piyomon! Koushiro: Tentomon! Jou: Gomamon!
As do the rest of the veterans with their Adult Partners.
Greymon: MEGA FLAME!!!
Greymon blasts DarkTyranomon and then the charges at him. DarkTyranomon flinches from the hit, but it's going to take more than that. They meet Greymon's charge, locking claws and struggling with one another just under the FCG Building.
Up in the building, the lights flicker on and off; More interference caused by the Digimon's presence. Everyone in the Fuji station is over at the windows now, watching the carnage below. Including one man who knows exactly what he's seeing.
Hiroaki: What...?
Yup. They're back.
In the dub:
(Stingmon Digivolves) Tai: Let's do it old-school style! Agumon: Mhm! (Greymon Digivolves) Matt: Everyone! Sora: Digivolve! Izzy: Now! Joe: Hurry! (The rest Digivolve) Greymon: NOVA BLAST!!! (Greymon and DarkTyrannomon lock claws) Hiroaki: T.K.!
I like Tai calling this "old-school style". Nice crusty veteran language there.
I don't know why the sight of Greymon makes Hiroaki suddenly exclaim "T.K.!" I mean, you can infer that he just sees a Digimon, knows his kids are involved with Digimon, and so deduces that his kids are mixed up in all that down there right now. But even then, why that kid specifically?
While Greymon and DarkTyranomon wrestle, the broadcast team watches from cover behind the destroyed tent.
Tumblr media
Chioka: This is just like what happened three years ago! What's going on!? Sakurada: Want to listen to a sutra?
I mean, there are Bakemon here so that might be a good idea.
Birdramon: METEOR WING!!!
Up in the air, Birdramon fires on Megadramon. Megadramon evades and the scattershots skirt past the FCG Building.
Chioka: Please don't demolish the Fuji TV Building again!
Meanwhile, the fighting continues elsewhere. Garurumon and Kabuterimon dogpile on Kuwagamon while Snimon dukes it out with Digmon.
In the dub:
Charlie: Quick, turn the cameras on! This is great stuff! This will be the highest rated show we've ever had! We'll even get a raise. Jeremiah: If anyone's left to give it. Birdramon: METEOR WING!!! (Birdramon misses) Megadramon: Ha! Missed me! Charlie: ...is it just me or isn't this exactly what happened four years ago!? (Dogpile on Kuwagamon) Garurumon: Surround him, Kabuterimon! (Snimon vs Digmon) Digmon: Didn't we meet in metal shop?
Charlie inexplicably goes from gushing about the publicity to freaked out and scared. They do retain the reference to the Odaiba invasion but drop the specific references to Sakurada's sutras, which the dub had replaced with self-help mantras anyway, and VenomVamdemon annihilating the FCG Building.
They also give dialogue to Megadramon, Garurumon, and Digmon during the carnage.
Jun and Momoe have managed to get away from the fighting and run. They watch the monsters duke it out from a safe distance.
Tumblr media
Jun: Monsters again... Just like three years ago....
We don't know where the Inoue family was during the Odaiba invasion but Miyako got called as a Chosen Child due to the Diablomon incident, so it's possible that they may have missed out on the 1999 invasion. But the Motomiyas were among the Big Sight prisoners when Vamdemon was assessing children.
The whole ribbon strips of reality in the sky thing aside, this might be Momoe's first real encounter with all this shit. Desperately want a side story about those two right now. But we're moving on. Say goodbye to Jun and Momoe, folks; That's the last we're going to see of them in this episode.
From there, we get a bit more of the action. Raidramon and Stingmon are having a hard time with Monzaemon's Lovely Attack. Ikkakumon, bold as ever, confronts the Bakemon, the Numemon, and a Phantomon all at once.
In the dub:
Jun: I don't know how long they can keep this up! I knew Davis liked action, but this!? (Monzaemon) Monzaemon: HEARTS ATTACK!!!
Dub Jun does not relate this to the Myotismon invasion. Instead, she seems to indicate that she knows Davis is down there mixing it up with the Digimon right now? That's pretty wild.
Monzaemon gets to call their attack.
Tumblr media
Yamato: There's no end to this. Taichi: What can we even do?
Well, we can kill them. But we're trying to move away from that.
Fortunately, Taichi may be team leader but he's not the only one. Behind him, senpai of senpais Jou is working the problem with Koushiro. Koushiro has his laptop open and they've already come up with something while Taichi and Yamato were busy panicking.
Jou: (quietly to Koushiro) Yes, that's our only option. (loudly to team) All of you! Round up the Digimon into one location! Koushiro: We'll send them back to the Digital World! Miyako: Perfect! HORUSMON!!! Horusmon: Understood! UDJAT GAZE!!!
Horusmon uses his paralyzing eye beams to neutralize the Numemon, the Bakemon, and Phantomon. Wow, even Phantomon.
Nefertimon & Pegasmon: SANCTUARY BIND!!!
Weaving a large net, Nefertimon and Pegasmon transport the pile of paralyzed Digimon back over towards the children.
Miyako: Izumi-senpai, is your laptop ready? Koushiro: It's already booted up. Miyako: Great! DIGITAL GATE, OPEN!!!
Holding out her D-3, Miyako opens the Gate and sends the net full of Digimon back to the Digital World from whence they came.
In the dub:
Matt: They're all over the place! Tai: Yeah... They've got us outnumbered-- Joe: Wait! I've got an idea. Everyone! Get all the evil Digimon together in one place. Izzy: We're going to send them back to the Digital World. Yolei: I know what to do! HALSEMON!!! Halsemon: At your service. TEMPEST WING!!! (Halsemon freezes the ghosties) Nefertimon: Ready, partner? Pegasusmon: Let's tie one on! Nefertimon & Pegasusmon: GOLDEN NOOSE!!! (Rideable angels transport the ghosties) Yolei: Is your laptop ready, Izzy? Izzy: Ready and able! Yolei: Then what are we waiting for? DIGI-PORT OPEN!!! Now! (Ghosties sent back)
I usually don't have much to say about the voice performances themselves since the actors do their jobs pretty well, but on that last line, Yolei sounds like a student flatly reading lines off of a page. Her actress must have been having an off day, because Yolei is a demanding role that calls for intense high-energy and she usually nails it.
In any case, Udjat Gaze is Tempest Wing again; The attack is used so rarely that it's never been given a distinct name, which makes it always confusing whenever Tempest Wing is suddenly a harmless paralyzing eye-beam.
Joe takes all the credit for the plan. In the original, it felt like Jou was managing, not idea-making. He reacts as though Koushiro just explained the plan to him, then calls everyone to attention and distributes it to them.
With the first batch of Digimon returned, we have a workable plan of action.
Tumblr media
Daisuke: Great! Let's keep it up! Taichi: We're counting on all of you! Hikari: But why did Digimon show up in this world again? Takeru: Not to mention a Dark Tower... Qinglongmon said that our real enemy is still out there. Is this what they meant? Iori: But the Dark Tower's evolution suppression function should have ended with the Kaiser!
While they're trying to figure out the plot, Greymon throws DarkTyranomon over his shoulder and straight into the Digital Gate, returning another one.
In theory, Iori's right. But Iori's forgetting the early part of the Arachnemon arc. Arachnemon can reactivate the Dark Towers to turn their evolution suppression back on. She did that in her arc's very first episode, where the Chosen Children were unable to evolve until the Tower was consumed to create Thunderballmon.
It's a good thing Dark Tower Digimon don't suppress evolution the same way or all of the Arachnemon/Mummymon/BWG/Holy Stone stuff would have been hell.
In the dub:
Davis: Well, that wasn't so hard. Tai: Easy as pie! Kari: Oh boy. We should make it a rule that Tai and Davis aren't allowed to be together in the same room. T.K.: Forget about them, Kari. It's the Digimon that worry me. How'd they get here to our world in the first place? Not to mention that Control Spire.... Cody: What if it's a brand new enemy!? (Greymon tosses DarkTyrannomon) Greymon: See you around! Not!
That seems pretty harsh, Kari. They didn't really say anything to warrant a verbal facepalm like that.
The dub cuts the reference to Qinglongmon's loredump entirely. T.K. has to do both his own questioning and Kari's in place of bringing Azulongmon up, and then Cody speculates that it's a brand new enemy.
It is not. It's the same one we've been fighting since episode 1. We just haven't met him yet. Though Cody is also about to be contradicted. So instead of Takeru suggesting that this is who Qinglongmon was talking about and being right, Cody makes up a new villain to be wrong about.
Though, in Cody's defense, I just finished pointing out that Iori's wrong too.
Once DarkTyranomon is through the Gate, Ken speaks up.
Tumblr media
Ken: It's Arachnemon. She can move between this world and the Digital World as she pleases.
Snimon goes back through the Gate next. We don't get to see how that happens; It just does.
Taichi: What was that!? Daisuke: She can do that!? Ken: The first time I met Arachnemon, it was in this world. I thought I dreamt that, but it really happened.
While Ken's talking, Nefertimon and Birdramon place a large sheet over more Digimon. They capture the last three Bakemon, Kuwagamon, and due to a continuity error, Snimon.
Garurumon, Ikakkumon, and Raidramon then come together to push them all.
Raidramon: READY!? PUSH!!!
Together, they move the bag full of Digimon into the Gate.
I don't think that contextless shot of Snimon being sent back was supposed to be there.
In the dub:
Ken: Listen up, everyone! I'm pretty sure I know who's behind all this. It's got to be Arukenimon. (Snimon sent back) Tai: You think so? Davis: What makes you think she's involved? Ken: Because she's able to move freely between the two worlds! Davis: Birdramon! Nefertimon! Wrap 'em up to go! (Birdramon and Nefertimon wrap 'em up to go) Snimon: Who turned out the lights!? Raidramon: Push 'em back! Push 'em back! WAAAAY BACK!!! (They push 'em back to the Digital World)
Ken drops the info-bomb that Arukenimon can come and go from the human world freely and absolutely nobody gives a shit. Davis ignores him and starts commanding the Digimon instead.
Ken also offers no explanation for why he knows she can do that and just hopes the audience remembers that episode.
With most of the Digimon returned to their world, only Megadramon and Monzaemon remain.
Tumblr media
Taichi: Just two Perfects left.
Daisuke and Ken nod to each other.
Daisuke: Let's Jogress evolve!
All of the Armor Digimon revert to their Child forms, then quickly evolve to Adult before going straight into their three Jogresses.
Paildramon: ESGRIMA!!!
Paildramon lunges for Megadramon with his wrist blade. Megadramon dodges to the side, then unloads a set of missiles from their arm cannons. Paildramon dodges upward, escaping the missiles, and we're just not gonna worry about where those landed. I'm sure it's fine.
Sylphimon: TOP GUN!!! Monzaemon: LOVELY ATTACK!!!
Sylphimon and Monzaemon's attacks collide, neutralizing them both.
Shakkoumon: NIGIMITAMA!!!
Shakkoumon releases his spinny blades. It's unclear if they nick the Digimon or not, but Megadramon and Monzaemon both momentarily freeze. Shakkoumon slowly reaches down and grasps Monzaemon by their squishy little head; It's super weird and hilarious, but gone in a flash.
Iori: NOW!!!
Paildramon gets the drop on Megadramon, grabbing them by the tip of their tail. He swings them around and tosses them. At the same time, Shakkoumon flings Monzaemon by their squishy little head. Both Perfects reach and Digital Gate and are pulled through. Koushiro slams the laptop shut triumphantly.
Miyako: Mission accomplished! Daisuke: We did it!
We did! And we all pitched in and pulled our weight! Except Kabuterimon, who decided we've got this and peaced out after that brief altercation with Kuwagamon earlier. As the Digimon return to their Baby forms, the team takes a moment to unpack.
Koushiro: But if that Digimon really can move freely between the Digital World and Real World.... Yamato: That's going to be a problem. Arachnemon: (distance) Huhuhohohoho! Team: (gasp) Daisuke: (steeling himself) We'll make sure to take her down!
I love the subtle touch of Arachnemon's distant, taunting little laugh. Just to validate their fears and confirm that this really is as bad as they think this is.
In the dub:
Tai: Just two Ultimates left! Davis! Ken! Would you like to do the honors? Davis & Ken: (nodding) Mhm! Davis: New plan, guys! We have to fight Ultimates with Ultimates! Go back to your Rookie stages and get ready to DNA Digivolve!
Davis spells out what they're doing as the team Digivolves down and then up again. It takes so long that right after "stages" the stock animation for the Digivolutions start up and he has to briefly talk over that.
(Champions Digivolve) Tai: Now let's see what all this DNA fuss is about. Davis: SHOW HIM, GUYS!!!
It's similar to Omnimon, Tai. You've kinda but not technically done it too.
(Ultimates DNA Digivolve) Paildramon: STING STRIKE!!! (Megadramon dodges and returns fire) Silphymon: STATIC FORCE!!! Monzaemon: HEARTS ATTACK!!! (Attacks neutralize each other) Shakkoumon: KACHINA BOMBS!!! (Shakkoumon picks up Monzaemon) Cody: Bed time! (Shakkoumon and Paildramon lob the pair through the Digi-Port) Cody: Don't forget your teddy bear! (Izzy snaps the laptop shut) Yolei: And to all a good night! Davis: Yeah! We did it! All the DigiDestined together! The ultimate teamwork!
The dub takes its third commercial break here.
I wasn't sure where Cody was going with "Bed time" because, like, we aren't knocking them out or something. But then he dropped the teddy bear line and I was like, okay yeah, that works.
Yolei's "And to all a good night" is a perfectly written and delivered Christmas Eve victory lap line, though.
On return from commercial, we get that last little bit.
Tai: Guys! If Arukenimon and her Digimon can move between worlds, then we're in trouble! Matt: What will we do!? Tai: We'll have to fight all over again! Sora: Oh no! Davis: Huh? ...relax! We'll get her! Junior Team: Yeah!
The taunting little laugh may not have made it into the translated script, so dub team interprets their own reason for Davis to suddenly look like he's reacting to something. Here, the veterans fear having to get involved and Davis reassures them that Junior Team has this.
Tai refers to the Digimon we fought as Arukenimon's Digimon, but Arukenimon doesn't have Digimon. She has Dark Tower Digimon, but we can destroy those without reservation. Also, Monzaemon called an attack so these clearly aren't Dark Tower Digimon, though that distinction doesn't exist in the dub where Dark Tower Digimon are even capable of quipping.
These seem more likely to be real, actual wild Digimon that were drawn against their will across the boundary between realities and went berserk. Basically the same thing that happened in Kyoto.
Now that all the action is over, the team sees Ken off to the Odaiba Seaside Park Station. He needs to get home to Tamachi.
Tumblr media
Taichi: Sorry about your party tonight. Ken: No, that's okay. Daisuke: We'll come hang out again sometime. Ken: Heh... See you.
Okay but Ken's mom was setting the table for a big roast turkey when we got Taichi's call so who's going to tell her that no one's coming back?
Giving the team one last smile, Ken heads up the stairs to catch a train.
Sora: Ichijouji-kun sure has changed. Hikari: He really has. Daisuke: He has? I haven't noticed anything different.... Taichi: That's just like you. But maybe it's for the best. Team: Ahahahahahaha!
Daisuke's been spending more time with Ken than anyone else, so he might actually not have noticed Ken's gradual development since it happened right in front of him. It's more shocking and abrupt for people who see him less frequently.
Similar to the way his change in behavior was more apparent to Mrs. Ichijouji's manager than to Mrs. Ichijouji herself.
But given the way Taichi scores points off of Daisuke, it could just be that Daisuke's unobservant. Again.
In the dub:
Ken: Thanks for walking me to the train, everyone. I guess my party is over, huh? It was short but it was fun. Davis: We had a great time, Ken! Ken: Me too. Thanks. (Ken heads up the stairs) Davis: And we're all gonna come over next year! Sora: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Kari: You too. Davis: Oh no! I forgot to kiss Kari under the mistletoe! Tai: He never quits... Davis, take it from me; You'll never learn about women! Team: Ahahahahahaha!
The dub cuts the validation of Ken's development. Instead, they do a Davis/Kari gag. Tai's line is kind of a slap to them both, given that he just lost out on the girl he was interested in earlier today.
But it also does work in the sense that Tai took Sora's rejection with grace and dignity (even if Agumon didn't) while Davis is still clinging to a hopeless pursuit.
Once Ken's off, the Chosen Children go their separate ways to enjoy their family Christmases.
Tumblr media
Taichi flops down on his bed and Agumon pounces on him.
Taichi: Agumon, you should stay until New Year's. (tempting) We can gorge ourselves on zouni...! Agumon: What's that? Is it good? I wanna try!
It's a soup made with mochi typically associated with the New Year's festival. Seeing as Agumon once tried to eat a live fish, I'm sure he'll love it whether it's good or not; The bar for his culinary tastes is so low you could trip over it.
Taichi playfully bounces Agumon on his knees.
Plotmon: You're such a glutton! Hikari: And he already ate such a shocking amount just now!
Agumon lets out a big yawn.
Agumon: I'm stuffed and now I'm getting sleepy.... Hikari: (affectionately incredulous) Seriously!?
Agumon falls asleep right there on Taichi and we begin a montage of Chosen Children with their families and Digimon, starting at Sora and Piyomon blissfully asleep in their bed.
In the dub:
Tai: Agumon, you were the best present ever! Can you stay through 'til New Year's? Agumon: I thought you'd never ask me! (Tai bounces Agumon) Salamon: Be careful, guys! You just ate! Kari: I don't want you losing your Christmas dinner on my bed! (Agumon yawns and lays down on Tai) Agumon: Tell me a Christmas bedtime story, wouldja, Tai? Kari: I know one....
Kari's about to narrate over the montage so we'll get to her bedtime story in a moment.
Tai does not bribe Agumon with promises of food in this version, nor do Kari and Salamon comment on his gluttonous appetite.
Kari inexplicably claims that Tai's laying on her bed. I think Dub Team forgot they're in separate rooms now and that we have, in fact, seen Kari's room for ourselves. This isn't it.
Moving on with the montage:
Tumblr media
Tentomon enjoys a family dinner with the Izumis.
Tentomon: YUM!!!
Jou takes a bath with Gomamon, which is a little out-of-place but it makes sense since Gomamon's an aquatic Digimon.
Yamato plays his harmonica at the dinner table for Gabumon, for old times' sake.
Tumblr media
At the Tachikawa residence, Palmon gets decorated as a Christmas Tree.
Iori and Tsubumon enjoy some of Mrs. Hida's famous ohagi. We haven't heard much of the ohagi recently but it came up a couple times in the early episodes, such as when Miyako was bartering computer repairs to Iori in exchange for it.
Pururumon demonstrates that he's still able to give Miyako those massages she likes to make Poromon do even in his Baby I form.
Tumblr media
Takeru shares a laugh with Tokomon and Tokomon's uncharacteristically gigantic and terrifying teeth. It's always been funny that he has those.
Ken and Leafmon share a quiet evening together in Ken's room.
And, as with how Sora and Piyomon started it, Daisuke and Chicomon close out the montage by crashing in bed together.
This all plays out in mostly silence, save for Tentomon's one line above, to the music of 天使の祈り Tenshi no Inori, or The Angel's Prayer. In the dub, replacing the song, we have Kari's bedtime story.
Kari: T'was a Digimon Christmas and everyone was busy. Especially the likes of Tentomon and Izzy! Joe played with Gomamon, Matt and Gabumon ate Palmon saw Mimi! Isn't that great!? Cody and Upamon shared a little sushi, While Pururumon sat on Yolei's tushy! Tokomon went caroling, Ken's thankful for friends, While in Davis's dreams, the fun never ends. Goodnight now. Merry Christmas!
They have to fudge some details to make that work.
Due to the speed the montage happens at, Sora and Biyomon get snubbed from the story. Kari has to do the setup over their footage.
Matt and Gabumon have food in front of them but are clearly doing something else.
It is great that Palmon saw Mimi! Gold star for that!
The dub's never given a name to Tsubumon so Kari just lies and says that's Upamon, even though she uses Pururumon's Baby I name in the next line.
Cody and "Upamon" are visibly not eating sushi. Those are actually sweet rice balls wrapped with bean paste. A rare instance of an anime dub misrepresenting Japanese cuisine as a different kind of Japanese cuisine. At least she didn't say hamburgers.
Pururumon is not sitting, he's coming down from a bounce.
Tokomon... might actually be singing, yeah. That is a valid interpretation of what he's doing there. He is not, however, "going" caroling because that is an outdoor activity.
Sadly, there is no montage slide in either version for Jun and Momoe. Which means we can't say for certain that they're not roaming Tokyo getting up to hijinx and then cheesing it before the cops come. They could be breaking into the museum right now. You don't know.
Jun gives me "Hey check this shit out" energy to Momoe's "I don't think we're supposed to be in here." Literally the only thing we know about Momoe is that she has nuanced but wise opinions about interpersonal relationships and love, so she's probably had an actual love life opposite Jun's deranged stalkings. What an interesting pair of characters to have be friends.
...
Anyways!
Tumblr media
Jun: AHHHHHHH!!!!
Jun screaming bloody murder on Christmas morning wakes Daisuke up but not their parents, who I presume are used to this from their terrible gremlin children.
Daisuke wanders out into the living room, wiping the sleep from his eyes, to catch a news broadcast on the TV.
Reporter: Last night, during a live broadcast on BS Fuji, the sudden appearance of a strange black tower startled the audience and set off a mass panic, with some claiming to have seen strange creatures.
Yes, the channel is actually called BS Fuji. No, it is not the Japanese equivalent to the Fox Network.
On the screen, the TV shows a Dark Tower near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and another by the Statue of Liberty in New York.
Reporter: Today, more of what appear to be those same black towards have appeared all across the world. We'll have more on this story as it develops. Daisuke: (thinking) Dark Towers....
Meanwhile, over at the Izumi residence, Koushiro is at his computer desk. He lets out a loud gasp.
Tentomon: What's wrong, Koushiro-han? Koushiro: Look at this, Tentomon. Tentomon: Eh?
On the screen, he has a map of the world with dozens of red asterisks flickering in places all across it.
Tentomon: ARE THOSE--!?!? Koushiro: Gates opening all across the world....
WELL THAT'S FUCKING OMINOUS
And that is where we leave off. A metric fuckton of Digimon are about to show up in various places all around the human world and, unlike the times when they were just manifesting by mistake through the weakened fabric of reality, they are actually going to be physically here.
Everywhere.
Have fun with that!
In the dub:
Jun: DAVIS, WAKE UP!!! Reporter: We now bring you a special report.... (Davis comes out) Davis: Why, what's going on? Rrrrgh.... Reporter: We've received many eyewitness reports on yesterday's monster attack downtown, including sightings of mysterious black obelisks. Internationally, reports now confirm that these towers are appearing all over the world! Jun: It's just like the one at Matt's concert! Davis: (thinking) More Control Spires! (Cut to Izzy's place) Izzy: AH!!! Tentomon: What's the matter, Izzy? Did your computer freeze again? Izzy: It's even worse! Look at this! Tentomon: Hmm? (Flickering asterisks on map) Izzy: Digi-Ports are opening all over the world! Tentomon: Oh no! Izzy: And there's nothing we can do to stop it! Tentomon: I don't suppose it could be Santa's new way of delivering toys? Izzy: Now what are we gonna do!? Narrator: Who is mysteriously opening all the Digi-Ports around the world? Find out next time on Digimon: Digital Monsters!
Jun shouts for Davis to come see this, which again seems to imply that she knows about Davis being a DigiDestined. In the original, he's just woken up by her incredible shrieking capabilities.
The news reporter goofs up and suggests there were multiple Control Spires at the concert last night.
Alright, let's talk promises made, promises broken. We were promised two answers.
-> What is this new evil Azulongmon spoke of?
Technically, we did meet him and you can probably guess. The evil dripped off of him with every word and gesture. So as long as you don't need it directly spelled out, I'd say this one was answered. The DigiDestined may not have met him yet, but we have.
-> Are the DigiDestined strong enough to face it?
This one, on the other one, wasn't even approached. We know so little about him at this juncture that we couldn't begin to conclude anything from the events of this episode. I award full points for the first question but no points for the second.
Assessment: Oh, it is good to be past the Holy Stones. I love the way this one starts out feeling like a nice, pleasant breather episode after the lore-dump from Qinglongmon and then curves straight into holy shit the world is ending.
No rest for the wicked! Someone needs to tell Arachnemon to take a vay-cay. It's the holidays!
Ahhh, this was a fun one. It had good character development, fun interactions between the cast, a heartwarming premise, and an introduction to a new kind of action we're going to have to get used to. There's only one problem with it.
And that is insufficient elaboration on Jun and Momoe! :P
