Some favourite Katsura moments of mine:

Katsura bringing food to Takasugi at the temple even though, as an orphan, he likely has very little to give to others.

Katsura then checking up on Takasugi now and then, because he knows what loneliness is and suspects Takasugi, who is receiving punishment and nearing disownment from his family, is probably feeling lonely, too.

Katsura forgiving Gintoki, because while he was affected by Shouyou’s death just as much, he understands Gintoki and knows he has more reason than anyone to despise the world—and because, more than likely, Katsura knows he would have done the same thing.

Katsura choosing not to fight Gintoki as a way to force him to join his organization when they first meet again.

Katsura then respecting Gintoki’s decision in the new era, and is influenced by him to seek more peaceful means of achieving reformation and even to invite Takasugi to do the same.

Katsura not being too proud to take on all kinds of jobs to make a living and fund his organization’s activities or else achieve its objectives through espionage.

Katsura stating he will be Gintoki’s “left arm” in order to help shoulder the burden from his right arm when Gintoki goes to rescue Shinpachi and Kagura from the Harusame.

Katsura then looking out for Shinpachi and Kagura, because he knows they are important to Gintoki and is probably rather fond of them himself.

Katsura not holding Sakamoto’s choice to go into space and seek ways to keep the peace between humans and the Amanto against him, because even if their methods are different, the end goal is the same: change for a better future. 

Katsura battling against the Amanto, but keeping an Amanto named Elizabeth as his most trusted ally.

Katsura making friends with his enemies, like Kondo, Saitou, and Shige Shige despite their differing viewpoints.

Katsura risking imprisonment and his own life for Kondo and the Shinsengumi, because even though he has fought against them multiple times, he won’t let that get in the way of banding together against a greater enemy for the sake of Edo.

Katsura taking a bullet for Kondo while fighting alongside him.

Katsura smiling at the joyous reunion between the Shinsengumi and Kondo, because he knows the pain of losing a leader and a mentor, and he’d wish for no one to experience that kind of loss.

Katsura enduring the perceived shame of his Runaway Kotarou nickname because he knows how to lead his men and fight in a war as a General—and also because it doesn’t matter when he’s heeding wise words from his grandmother.

Katsura being “egg-headed” and fooled by some things, but simultaneously brilliant, cunning, and intelligent as a warrior, strategist, and leader; possessing a charisma that draws many to follow him.

Katsura letting himself just be Zura when Gintoki, Takasugi, and Sakamoto are around.

this started out as “bad guy vs. good guy”, but here you realize this whole fight is just a spat between two boys who made a choice that haunted them forever and here they’re dealing with the consequences and it’s just so fucking brutal watching them beat the shit out of each other because it’s not about killing the other anymore–it never was–because why waste time punching him when you can just grab the remainder of your blade and stick it into his heart right there and then?

aspirations. a punch. bonds. another punch. wills. and another. hatred. and another and another and another and

takasugi just keeps punching because that’s the only way he knows to get rid of the agony, of the pain of remembering, because he doesn’t want to remember gintoki’s face, because that hurts too much, because for everything he says, he knows, he KNOWS why gintoki did it and he knows why he aches because he knows what HE would have done and he hates it, he hates that he would have made the same choice, and he hates gintoki for making that choice and he hates the world for making him gintoki make that choice and it just isn’t fair–it just isn’t fair–that gintoki had to take up that burden, that shoyou had to die at the hands of his student, that they fought a whole war to save their sensei, only to kill him with their own hands because they were too weak, and oh god, why were they so weak, they were just boys, they were supposed to save him, why did it end up like this, it’s been 10 years and takasugi still doesn’t have the answer, and he doesn’t know if he ever will, and he doesn’t know if he ever wants the answer, so he’ll just keep destroying, and he’ll get revenge for sensei, and he’ll swing his fists down at the enemy, and he’ll throw a punch and another punch and another and another and another and

takasugi vs. gintoki is my favorite fight of anything ever.
