"Place Your Bets" Translation

After quite a while of not translating (around a year), I am back. This time I translated Makonyan's new single, "Place Your Bets". The jazz and rock melody really grabs your attention and showcases his maturity.

This single is released to celebrate his 5th artist debut anniversary. As a way to give back to his fans, he brought us "Place Your Bets". Yes, he did write the lyrics.

According to Seigura July 2023 issue, this a parallel of "Miserable Masquerade". With the theme of it being "counter attack". It is about a man out for revenge. I will not try to explain too much cause I'll probably TL the article when the copy is in my hands.

Rainy Day is also another song he wrote the lyrics for. I'll most likely TL Rainy Day, too.

Before you start reading the TL, please do note a few stuff. I am no expert in Japanese and I am still learning it. I am sorry in advanced if there are any mistranslations. With that being said, please enjoy this masterpiece 🙏

Notes:

⑴ 「踏み締める」means to harden by treading. I use trample just cause it's easier for many to understand. It's also not too long, unlike the original definition.

⑵ This starts the saga of "Furukawa Makoto using different furigana than the actual furigana of the kanji". 「関係性」is read as 「かんけいせい」(kankeisei). But the furigana says 「カタチ」(katachi). From what I have found, 「カタチ」means visage. Take this information as you will. I believe the visage of the relationship is the one that's fragile.

⑶ Similar situation to ⑵, 「勝負」is usually read as 「しょうぶ」(shoobu). But in here, it's written as 「ゆうぎ」(yuugi). 「ゆうぎ」can be written in kanji as 「遊戯」and 「遊技」. First one meaning "play" and the other meaning "pasttimes". Again, take this info as you will.

⑷ I did my best with this one. But this is just how much I can translate the sentence.

⑸ Same situation with ⑷, this is just how much I can translate the lyrics.

⑹ 「トドメ」here is written purely in katakana. So no kanji or anything which made it confusing. Other than translating to "final blow", it could also mean "stab".

⑺ Same situation as ⑷ & ⑸. This is seriously the best I can do for this sentence.

⑻ Has a similar situation here where he used straight up katakana [ハナムケ]. Further confusing which kanji it is. In the end, the only fitting meaning I found is a "parting gift". The other meaning has something to do with a horse's nose.

My copy finally arrived!!! I'll try to translate it when I have the time but I'll not give any promises that I will (it is a lot of reading 😭)

I wonder if Makoto's interest in doing adult-oriented works like he said in your translated interview is the reason why he does r18 works

Hm.. I can't say for sure if his "lowkey perverted" nature is the reason why he enjoys R18 works. Heck we can't assume if he actually does enjoy doing R18 works. I think most seiyuus do R18 works to earn more money. This is quite common amongst underrated seiyuus such as Nakazawa Masatomo or Okitsu Kazuyuki and many more. At least from my knowledge, R18 works pay quite a lot of money.

At the end of the day, they're all doing it to get paid. I guess some seiyuu see it as a sort of necessity to get by until they have some sort of breakthrough in their careers. That's just kind of the dark side of the seiyuu industry. I can't say for sure this IS the situation for him, but it could be the reason why he's doing R18 works.

In any case, his "lowkey perverted" self is hilarious for unconsciously writing lyrics like that 😂

Onlynight Crown Translation

Ay! Another translation! And this time it's one of the newer ones! And this must be the translation with the least amount of notes! Hai Glass being the highest amount. Speaking of Hai Glass..

This song is the continuation of Hai Glass (according to Seiyuu Animedia July 2022 issue). I haven't got my copy yet (it's still in Japan 😭), but according to my moot, Yeon, the story is more about Cinderella expressing her happiness in the ball. She knows very well that her time is slowly running out. The lyrics definitely described it perfectly~

I was already excited about this song when I first heard the preview and the description made me even more excited. This is why i decided to translate it ASAP. And in my opinion, Makonyan really improved his English in here! The grammar makes so much sense! His pronunciation really improved, too!

With that being said, I would like to point out the usual...

I am NOT an expert in Japanese and I'm still learning around the ropes. I apologize if there's any inaccurate translation. I did my best to make the translation as accurate as possible. Even if it's not 100% accurate, it still has the idea of what the original is trying to say.

With that being said, please enjoy this masterpiece by Makonyan and I do hope I was able to help my fellow Makonyan fans~

⑴. The first bump I have in this translation. I couldn't find a proper meaning to 「明かそう」 (akasou) but this is the closest I can get. It might be inaccurate, but still has the idea of what he's trying to say.

⑵. It's about 90% accurate. Still has the idea of what the original says so don't worry ^^

⑶. I would like to point this out. In the lyrics, the "candle" part is written as 「灯り」 (akari) which means glow or illumination. Was about to say "illumination" but saw in the furigana that he pronounced it as 「キャンドル」 (kyandoru), which is "candle".

⑷. Oh god I never thought this small sentence would made me go insane. Okay, so I'll point this out again. This has a similar issue with note ⑶ where the kanji 「矮小」 is pronounced as 「わいしょう」 (waishou). Btw that's the pronunciation I found for it. But when I looked at the furigana, he pronounced it as 「チャチ」 (chachi). Unfortunately, I have no idea what 「チャチ」 means so I resort to the meaning of 「わいしょう」. Even when I tried to dig the internet for it, it still didn't gave me an answer. The only closest result I got is an orca lol. Update on this issue: I found out some people use 「チャチ」 to say "cheap". Take this information as you will. It could either be "diminutive" or "cheap".

⑸. Ah okay this was actually a pretty interesting find. Oorasu 「オーラス」 is actually a made up English term by Japanese. It's a combination of two words, "all" and "last". I just wrote "all last" lol. But it's also a mahjong term meaning the "last game" or "last round". At least, that is what I got from some native people's explanation. I also found that oorasu can also be equivalent to saying "finale". Which is why I wrote "finale" as an option. I honestly thought oorasu just mean "aura" or something. Surprise, surprise you end up learning a mahjong term.

It seems like Makonyan is a bit disappointed that roon of no name turned out to be a bit of rush job. He seems to think that Craving turned out the best as a song and I'm glad since it's my favourite 🥺

Yes! He did have fun working on it, but was not given much time to work on it. He volunteered to write the lyrics for the songs and definitely finished it days if not minutes before recording starts. But despite the short time given, he executed it very well that we barely see he's rushing it/the result of being in a tight schedule. Craving has a sort of special place for Makonyan. Imo, it's bcuz of it being smth that could be put in the Fate series/a song out of the Fate Series (which is one of his fav series). I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as he does ^^

Maybe if he's given much more time, he would be more satisfied. But I could say he is quite satisfied with how ROOM of No Name turned out. There tends to be a theory that there are people that gave a satisfactory result when they're working on a tight deadline. Maybe Makonyan is that type of person, but that's just what I think~

Let me tell you how this all started!

It started when I was alone in my room.. and then I randomly remembered... ANN once posted an article about Anisong artists creating their personal playlist to share as part of this huge campaign

Of course I can't get that playlist out of my mind so I decided to ask my moots if they have the list for it. Some may think: "why don't you click the link in his commentary video?". Welllll my fellow friends... the link is broken a.k.a no longer around.

One of my moots used to have the list, but they lost it. So we went on a widespread search just to find that playlist.

Hi! I noticed that you're pretty much a Makoto niisan fan!! Thank you for translating his songs! A quick question for Hikachin-san. Why do you like Makoto??

Yo~!! Ahh thank you so much!!

Hmmm, I'll be honest here. I haven't been a fan for a very long time. I think it started last year? I forgot. I have senpais who are above me when it comes to Makonyan.

Now why do I like him? I think it started from his voice. I do love listening to situation CDs so I guess it was from there that I know him. I've known Makonyan for a long time actually, but wasn't that interested in following him closely. Yes, I know him in some situation CD series, anime such as OPM, and IM@S Side M where he's part of Cafe Parade (which is my fav group). I think I started stanning him after I listened to his song (pretty sure it was Miserable Masquerade) and reading up things about him. From reading more of him, I noticed how wholesome he is and I felt like he's genuinely a nice person. I also felt like he really gave his best in every single work he has. So not only voice, but personality wise, he is the type of person you'd want to be friends with.
