Because Space can be Limited. Some galleries that I sell to go for an open space - minimal look. Most are cornucopias of wonder and pretty well knock your socks off the moment you walk into them. I supply my papier-mâché jewellery with displays to both wholesale and S.O.R galleries. There’s no obligation to use them but most are thrilled to bits to have them. I prefer it if they do as then customers can see how the colours shift as the earrings move - I incorporate all sorts of artistic devices in order to emulate a butterfly’s 🦋wing, a beetle’s 🪲back, a magpie’s feather or the iridescence found the ancient glass. I love my work. Preparing to Recreate Ancient History. I use papier mache as a tool - a medium to teach - to take people on a journey of discovery. Of history and of our own perhaps latent creativity. So today I’m gathering together the materials I’m going to require to make this incredible flask in paper mache. But the intention is that it will resemble ancient glass with all the beauty and magic that time bestows. This flask is in the British Museum - it is only 8.8 cm high. So very small. I’m seeing it in a larger form. The original is made (originally) from clear green glass whose original forms were made by lost-wax casting but whose final shape, including the central hole, was achieved by grinding and cutting when cold. This interpretation will be using egg boxes and other pre-formed packaging to provide the basic pulp ingredients. Also wood shavings and sawdust. PVA glue, whiting and marble dust. Also Polyfilla. Silver, gold and copper leaf. Mainly artificial silver and gold with flashes of the real thing. And acrylic inks plus oil glazes. I’m considering a glass interior. Plus I’ll probably construct it on the glass form and then cut it in half so that I can gild the inside.
