The situation in Chile

Hi, I'm chilean and I'd like you to stop for a second to understand what is going on in my country.

What most people know about is the state lf emergency, the vandalism and police/military forces killing and hurting people, but there is so much more.

On October 6th the metro fare rised from $US1.10 to $US1.15. It doesn't seem like much, but it already was the most expensive of latin america. Now, imagine spending $US 2.30 daily (two trips) when you earn less than $US 430 monthly. 30 days x $2.30 = $US 69. It's a lot.

However, the fare rise was only the straw that broke the camel's back. Chile has a history of inequity, supported by many political and economic sistems.

There was riot, but more importantly a social awakening happened. Here are some of the problems the people are protesting for:

Current constitution made during Pinochet's dictatorship

Miserable pensions based on a single, mandatory and unfair sistem (made by our president's brother btw)

Millions of dolars stolen by politicians/buisnesspeople who were forgiven for their crimes

People DYING while waiting for medical atention

Minimum gross wage $US 424/ President wage $US15,500

Deficient and snobbish educartion sistem

Children abused and even raped on the child services DAILY

That is what people has lived for the past decades. Now you can add the poor responses given by the president Piñera and others, and pacos (cops) who have severely hurt and even sexualy abused some people.

Nonetheless I must say, not everything has been fire and violence, no. Many artistic and pacific protests have ocurred as well. Also, on friday October 25th THE BIGGEST MARCH IN CHILEAN HISTORY CONGREGATED, with near 1.500.000 people only in Santiago
