Some things about Hiromasa that make him highly masculine to me (from Episode 1)

I feel like compiling some "masculine Hiromasa" moments because I've seen him be called a pansy/effeminate online several times and I couldn't disagree more.

Even though I believe it's part of his duties in the Court to help with such matters, Hiromasa's dedication to protecting others is admirable. It's true that he's not the strongest or most skilled physically, but his heart and intentions are alligned with protecting others and helping others.

After Seimei's teasing him leading to him encountering a white snake in the garden, Hiromasa falls into a koi pond. Even though he is clearly irritated by becoming soaked, he doesn't lash out in anger and still holds himself to civility and dignity. He even denies Seimei's offer to come onto the engawa because he doesn't want to make it dirty. This shows that Hiromasa not only is able to control his emotions while under stress or irritation but that he is responsible and caring for another person's space.

Just this shot of him being concentrated on his work (despite looking rather bored) is masculine to me.

You could call him naive, but he tries at all possible ways to see the best in others. Even in uncomfortable situations, Hiromasa strives to maintain a positive attitude and doesn't fall into seeing the worst in everything. Hiromasa is a piece of brightness in a cruel and unforgiving world instead of submitting himself to being consumed by the darkness caused by life and other people's immoral actions. It takes a very strong spirit to be able to do this, and although Hiromasa is privileged in the comfort of his social status, meaning it would be easier for him to maintain positivity than it would be for a less fortunate person, you do see during the course of the series how other people with privilege still succumb to the darkness.

+ Hiromasa was pretty clueless to your clearly being awkward around him. He was too wrapped up in his own nervousness and awe for you that he wasn't able to take in the signals

+ Instead, he outstretched both of his hands and handed you the waka, which was now crumpled a bit at the sides of the paper and somewhat moist from his sweaty hands

+ He gulped and blushed as you took the paper with a short "thank you". As you read it silently to yourself, his heart raced even faster

+ You wanted to cut your interaction with him as short as possible, so you smiled at him and told him that it was nice and that you'd have to get going now

+ But unfortunately for you, Hiromasa grinned and blurted out "May I join you?"

+ Well, it was becoming quite a difficult task to get rid of him. You started by telling him that you really needed to be by yourself to clear your head. But because there were rumours of another demon running amok, that wouldn't fly, and Hiromasa insisted to stay with you as protection in case there was an attack

+ Not like he could ... do much without Seimei. Granted, his sword skills were not very impressive and he carried arrows around with him more often than he ever shot them

+ It took a while, but eventually you convinced him that you would be fine by yourself and that you would only be taking your usual route. After you denied Hiromasa's insisting a couple more times, he finally backed off and left you to yourself

+ To say that Hiromasa left you looking dejected was an understatement. You had to admit, you felt a bit sorry for him after. You secretly did think he was rather cute. But, other circumstances in your life and your brewing trauma had tainted your soul enough to turn you into a demon, and you had chosen that path. It was best for Hiromasa to keep his distance from you, even better that he was hurt by you, in hopes that he -- and through him, Seimei -- would remain a distance from you

+ In fact, the interaction with Hiromasa made you even more vicious as a demon, and without your consciousness fully realising it, you had begun to cause more casualties in the city when you surrendered to your demon side

+ It was only a matter of time before the Emperor would have Seimei get on the case of the mysterious demon that was you

+ Days passed before you found your demon self cornered by Seimei, who was accompanied by Hiromasa

+ Despite the strength you had mustered through devouring humans and other animals, you were unable to win against Seimei. But as you were about to be exorcised, the waka Hiromasa had given you fell from the inside of your kimono sleeve and wilted through the air, almost as if carried by a breeze, over to his feet while he was playing the flute

+ Hiromasa stopped playing immediately and Seimei's magic weakened enough for you to break free of the spell that was to exorcise you

+ Despite Seimei's anger, Hiromasa stood between him and you, trying to protect you from Seimei. He refused to let you be exorcised

+ Frankly, it wasn't a very prudent decision on his part. He hardly knew you and he hadn't even learnt your name. But he liked you and he wasn't going to let you be killed so easily

+ Eventually, Seimei gave up arguing with Hiromasa. He said that if Hiromasa wasn't able to get you under control that he would have to kill you both

+ Hiromasa, naive as he was, agreed to that. But although it seemed at first that he had just made a grave decision, after spending isolated time with you, he was able to help you regain your humanity

+ It was a huge risk on his part. You didn't know why you never attacked him or tried to eat him while you were a demon, but somehow you were never able to muster any urge to do so. You liked Hiromasa and you didn't want to hurt him, and the kindness that he showed you was able to touch deep into your soul

+ Hiromasa never viewed you as anything less because you had turned into a demon. He still liked you just as much as he did before, and now that you got to know each other more, it was clear that his instincts were correct and that he had made the right decision

But yes! I never thought of that before, but of course Atsumi's talent would have to equal Hiromasa's if Lord Taizan accepted it as a trade!

And what makes it sadder is that if Atsumi does come to realise it at the end during the time he takes to himself that he'll never get his flute playing back. His inferiority complex not only made him kill his friend (who was like a little brother to him, even) and got him expelled from the society he knew, but it cost him the talent he had that was equal to Hiromasa's all along.

another thing i love about onmyoji, atsumi's arc in particular, is how atsumi's talent for the flute was never... less than hiromasa's talent, actually

because we're told again and again that in order to receive something from lord taizan, something of equal worth has to be offered in exchange. and atsumi offered his talent in exchange for the return of hiromasa's talent

and lord taizan accepted it, so an actual god deemed atsumi's talent worth just as much as hiromasa's

i especially love that they aren't too heavy-handed with this, they don't have anyone pop up to be like "see atsumi? you were just as good all along, you turned into an oni for nothing!"

it's just quietly shown to us, in a way that's frustrating in the most exquisite way. like, genuinely a good kind of frustrating. because you as the viewer understand from that moment that atsumi didn't turn into an oni because of a lack of talent, but because of his inability to not compare himself to hiromasa (and because of all those around them comparing them as well, of course)

like that was pretty obvious already, that it was his inferiority complex rather than an objective lack of talent fueling his inner turmoil, but this final moment of a god accepting his talent in exchange for hiromasa's, silently proving they were equals all along, is just so profoundly sad in a way i adore
