October 20, 1916 - Russian Battleship Imperatritsa Mariya Sinks by Internal Explosion
Pictured - Imperatritsa Mariya, or Empress Maria, was one of the lead dreadnoughts in the Imperial Russian Navy.
Misfortune befell the Imperial Russian Navy on October 20, 1916, when the spontaneous combustion of ammunition propellants caused an internal explosion that sank the dreadnought Imperitrtisa Mariya, at harbor in Sevastopol. The lead dreadnought of her class, Empress Maria had been launched in 1913, and played a role in the Black Sea Fleet during the first two years of the war.
On October 20 an engineer discovered an internal fire in one of the ammunition magazines, probably caused by decomposing nitrogen. Thinking quickly, he flooded the magazine, preventing an even more calamitous disaster, but several explosions breached the ship’s waterline and caused it to capsize after forty minutes. Two hundred and twenty-eight sailors went down with her. In 1918 the hull was salvaged, but the Russian Civil War prevented any further repairs, although her 130mm main guns were removed for battle on land.
