“Despite popular belief, I don't actually think the following verse is about cussing...

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing." - James 3:9-11

I don't think James is talking about not saying this word or that word because we all know people who can cuss you out in "Christian talk" without using a single four-letter word.

In Scripture, profanity is largely about irreverence: disrespect to God, His people, or His creation. Tim Shorey calls it "the profanity of belittlement."

It's much less about a list of words and much more about the posture of our heart. Our words put on full display what lies in our hearts.

Jesus himself teaches this:

"The mouth speaks what the heart is full of."

- Jesus (Luke 6:45)

If we find it difficult to speak words of healing, we need to take a good look at our hearts.

Are you angry all the time?

Jealous of other's success?

Do you feel the need to point out the weaknesses in everyone else?

Are you an expert in all that is wrong?

If you don't like the words that are coming out of your mouth, maybe a question worth asking is:

"What's going into my heart that speaks the same way I do?"

In order to change what comes out of our mouth, we have to change what goes into our heart.

A critical heart

speaks critical words.

A self-righteous heart

speaks judgmental words.

A fearful heart

speaks negative words.

A bitter heart

speaks toxic words.

BUT...

A grateful heart

speaks gracious words.

A faithful heart

speaks truthful words.

A peaceful heart

speaks reconciling words.

A loving heart speaks healing words.

And Jesus, as he often does, takes it all even further.

He doesn't say to only speak life-giving words to those we like. He says, "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

Love, not curse.

Pray, not condemn.

Maybe a question we all should ask is: "Have I prayed for this person half as much as l've criticized them?"

Here's the secret: pray everything you dream, hope, and want for your own life for anyone you see as an enemy and see if your heart doesn't begin to change.

Here are a few indicators of untamed words:

1. Taking cheap shots at people.

2. Repeating of rumors.

3. Sharing of details that should remain private.

4. Making yourself look good at the expense of others.

5. Gossiping. (Even masked as "prayer requests")

6. Maximizing sins of others while minimizing your own.

7. Adding details to make the absent appear worse.

8. Dismissing unkind remarks with, "I was only joking."

Good point!!! I remember many times when I first believed - over 40 years ago - the songs, music, and praise and worship time could make or break a church for me!! I’m so sad when I realize that the best of that part is what usually held me in churches who were lost in deception!!!!! How ironic!!!!! But not really ironic - because the devil knows how to appeal to our flesh to keep us from the truth. 🙈

Jesus said that we will know the truth about Himself only if we are willing to do His will, that is, if we allow ourselves to be changed by the truths we find in Scripture. He said, “If any man’s will is to do His will (that is, if he determines to do it), he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority” (John 7:17). We must not assume that we will be able fully to understand any passage of Scripture unless we are willing to be changed by it.

what’s the biggest miracle you’ve seen in your own life?

This may seem lackluster, but that He sustains me. That I keep coming back to Him over and over because of Who He is and what He has done in my life; His indwelling Spirit. There are things that sometimes don't make sense about following Christ, dying to yourself, obeying His Word and ways over what you "want" to do, what the world says, what your flesh says, and the fact that He has given me a deep love for Himself in me. This is a miracle: that He loves me and won't let me go. I love Him so much I could cry, I want to be with Him, and He is my Lord, God and King; this is my miracle. His grace in my many imperfections and rebellings. Why is He so good to me? His grace.
