Of course he knew that Dean was right. They were never going to make it out of here in the state that they were in. They needed to rest and regroup. They needed a plan. And so many other things that Eddie didn't want to think about right now. A breath leaves him as Dean finally seats himself behind him in an attempt to hold him up. It was comforting in a way that Eddie never really expected. Between the heat of Dean's bpdy seeping into him and the steady beat of his heart thudering against his own⦠Eddie finds himself fighting to stay awake.
"Hey," he breathes out after a long stretch of being quiet. "Thanks for comin' to save my assā¦" Eddie knew that he didn't need to say it out loud. But the last thing that he wanted was to never get out of here and not have ever told Dean just how thankful he was. He'd have never tasked Dustin with dragging him out of here. Not with the state that the kid had been in. And the others had bigger things to worry about at the end of the day. He had no idea if they were even alive. Had even less idea if they'd even managed to save Max. All of this might have been for nothing at the end of the day.
Eddie could only hope that it had been worth it.
Eventually exhaustion takes over and drags Eddie into sleep. His head is tipped back against Dean's shoulder, it tugs at the wound along the junction of his shoulder and neck but he hardly cares at this point. It could have been minutes that pass or hours, Eddie has no idea when he wakes up. All that he does know is that he doesn't remember a time that he's ever woke up so thirsty.
"This is worse than any hangoverā¦" he breathes out before shifting slightly. Straightening himself out a low groan sounds as he stretches himself out once more. "Never partying like that againā¦"
--- this was the sort of thing that even dean hadn't been prepared for. monsters were one thing; he could deal with all kinds of monsters. his dad had prepared him for just that type of life since he could barely hold a gun in his hands. heading into a land of monsters to save his friend was totally different.
the upside down was the closest thing dean could imagine to hell. it felt like it as he fought his way through what felt like endless enemies just looking for any sign of anyone human. he came across a terrified dustin when he made it in, who explained the insane plan to him. he explained everything they were doing with vecna and how he and eddie had been a distraction, but after that dean had no idea how long he went before he even found eddie. when he did find him he was sure he was dead. it was what dustin had told him to expect, or at least what the poor kid had tried to get out before dean sent him back topside promising him that he was bringing eddie back. when eddie opened his eyes dean could hardly believe his.
now that they were 'safe', in the ranger station, that moment felt like so long ago. dean had no idea how long they had even been in the upside down. for all he knew they had been down there days or even longer. the strange skies did nothing to ease his mind. if anything he wanted to keep going, he practically had to be dragged into the ranger station in the first place, but dean did listen to eddie's insistence after a few tries.
once his hand was bandaged up dean's grip went right back to his gun. he did finally look at eddie, though. whatever had happened to him in the upside down, he knew he was still in rough shape. they might need more supplies but dean wasn't sure they were going to make it very much farther as they were. he looked back out to the sky again. he knew they needed to get back to hawkins. he knew eddie was worried about everyone, especially wayne. hell he was worried about sam even if he knew sammy could look after himself at this point, but how could they hope to get anywhere like they were?
"rest first," dean uttered the first words he'd said in probably hours. he had no idea at this point having lost all concept of time. he sat down behind eddie and put his back to his so they could support one another. really, dean was giving eddie something warm and solid to lean against. dean knew he could have kept going but eddie was no hunter. he didn't have a marine trained hunter father that taught him how to stay alive in impossible situations. dean had to look after him. he wasn't going to save eddie from the upside down just for him to collapse before they could make it back to hawkins. it might be risky for them to stay in the ranger station but right about then dean figured being anywhere near hawkins was risky. "don't worry. i'll keep you safe."

Eddie listens intently as he works on the sandwich that he'd been given. Snorting here and there as Dean explains as he met these kids that he's taken in. He was going to need a hot minute to process everything that he had been told. It wasn't surprising that Dean had caught himself up in such a mess of --- well everything. He knew Dean more than well enough to know that he really couldn't leave well enough alone when trouble called. But he would be a hypocrite if he said that he wouldn't have ended up in similar situations.
The Fear Toxin was concerning. Especially knowing everything that Dean had gone through. Nightmares weren't exactly something that were standard issue when it came either of them. And to think that there was something out there that could cause them to relive any of that⦠Eddie wasn't sure he wanted to run into that. Knowing that the kid in question managed to handle Dean so well given what he knew Dean was like, that was promising. He'd have to high five the kid when they meet. Dean was no treat when he was heading down a panic attack.
An actual laugh leaves him with the retelling of the shifter. Of course Dean had handled that poorly. Normally it would have been better to let someone find out on their own, but Eddie also knew how dangerous that could be. And hearing that he still wasn't believed even after seeing the den. He's surprised that Dean hadn't come out of that with a bullet wound. But Eddie is proud of the kid for the self control.
Brows lift as he smirks when he's wared off confirming that Dean was in fact a friendless hermit. Snickering to himself through the last bite of his sandwich.
"Okay, glossing over the names these kids are going by⦠I think I've got a pretty good idea of how meeting these two is gonna go. And if I get shot or punched I'm gonna be real mad at you." He was sure that it wouldn't go that way, but Eddie was trying to be prepared for anything at this point. Eyes roll with the accusation that he wasn't telling Dean the truth or that he was leaving information out. And⦠well Dean wasn't entirely wrong.
"I⦠was looking for them again," Eddie knows that could mean anything to Dean at this point. "The coven that my mom was part of before she died. I found them out in Cali." He knew that it wouldn't help him at all, if anything it had made things worse for a while. But he'd needed it for closure. He'd only been allowed twelve years with his mom. And hearing more about her than he'd ever known had dredged up the anger and guilt that he'd felt all those years ago. Dean had warned him off it.
But as usual, Eddie hadn't listened.
--- "yeah, figured that would be your answer," dean replied with a sigh dropping down into one of the kitchen tables facing eddie. he wasn't phased eddie wasn't sitting in a chair or surprised he wouldn't give up the cameras. eddie liked having his fun with him too much and knowing one of the kids he looked after getting one over on him had to be hilarious to his long time friend. "first set i found i mooned them to get him to take them down. he must have hid these a little better," dean commented clearly amused.
eddie's question had dean pausing to think but he had an idea that explained both of them really well. "alright i'll give you details. damn you act like i don't tell you anything," he grinned. "let me tell you how i met them both. i think that'll give you an idea about them." kicking back in his chair dean's boots came to rest on the table. his ankles crossed and he grabbed a couple chips from the open bag sitting before him before he started.
"so first of all i'm not giving you their names because it's a vigilante thing and it's their choice." he gave a little shrug. he knew jason would be pissed at the very least. "anyway i met red robin after i got gassed with this shit called fear toxin. i was tailing these demons who were working with this gotham crazy named scarecrow and i got a face full of this shit. the kid found me screaming my head off. no surprise considering the shit makes you see your worse nightmares," he had to scoff there. he knew eddie would understand what that meant for dean. "kid managed to wrangle me into a safehouse, sedate me and watch over me through it. when i came to he had food dropped off for us and stayed with me to make sure the effects of it wore off. he managed to handle my paranoid ass like a pro," dean laughed thinking back on their meeting.
"when i met the red hood for the first time -- i kind of told you this but i'll give you the whole story-- i was tracking this shifter and when i caught up with it, the hood had already shot him. apparently the shifter picked the wrong face." dean chuckled at the memory. "well i knew the bastard was faking it since it wasn't like the kid had shot him with silver bullets but i didn't know what to do. i couldn't let the kid take the body so i tried to improvise really badly and i shot him with a sliver bullet and said 'now he's extra dead'. kid didn't buy it and aimed the gun right between my eyes," dean started laughing harder at that. "after that i had to show him the shifter lair down in the sewers. he still didn't really trust me but he doesn't trust anyone." dean grabbed some more chips and crunched away.
"they're gonna be surprised to meet you, though. they both think i'm a friendless hermit," dean tipped his head a little in thought. "which i know isn't that far off at this point. you don't gotta say it," he shot eddie a knowing look before he had a chance to speak up. "alright now it's your turn. still know you ain't tellin' me shit. out with it already before i kick your ass."

Where Dean had gone was anyone's guess. Eddie was sure that he'd told him when he was half asleep, but his mind had never really registered the information. Having showered and made himself enough coffee to kill a normal person, he'd set about snooping. It wouldn't surprise Dean if he knew. Eddie was nothing if not a nosy person by nature.
The music that was playing through the cabin dampens any noise from the outside. As much as it left him more vulnerable than usual, he doubted that Dean would post up somewhere dangerous. Least of all in this situation that he found himself in these days. He's thumbing through a book when the sound of the door catches his ear. There's no real worry in the noise, Eddie assumes that Dean is back already and he would have called if he needed help with anything.
What Eddie is not prepared for is someone else coming through the door. Eyes widening slightly, he's up off the sofa in a second putting distance between himself and the other. Logically Eddie assumes that this is one of the 'kids' that Dean had told him about. However, he was not expecting a 'kid' that was likely taller than Dean and built like a brick shithouse.
Jumping slightly as the kitchen table bumps into the back of him, his hands lift in front of him. This was not how he thought this would go. His chances of getting the snot kicked out of him raised exponentially. What a bad (or extremely fortunate) time to be unarmed.
"Okay... I know how this looks..."

Eddie has no idea how they had survived. Has no idea how he had survived. And by all rights he absolutely shouldnāt have. The wounds that he was covered in should have killed him fairly quickly. Heād thought for sure that they had. The cold had seeped in leaving him breathless and numb. Staring up at Dustin but barely seeing him as his brain fought to keep his body going. Heād told Dustin how much he loved that kid. Begged him to get himself out of there. And he had. Somehow he had gotten himself up and out of the rift torn between worlds not long after Eddie had succumb.
Yet he hadnāt died like he was supposed to. There would be time to worry about all of that later. The repercussions of what the Upside Down had done to his body. The venom left from the hundreds of bites that he wore.
Eddie had woken with a start when Dean had finally found him. All sense of time was lost on him. He could have been lying there for hours or perhaps even days or years. By the look that was plastered on Deanās face it had been a substantial amount of time. After that it was nothing but a blur of movement and fighting. Exhausting himself to keep from burdening Dean with having to get them both out of here.
The state of the Right Side was horrifying. The sky was red and dark. Demobats illuminated by the lightening that streaked across the sky. Clearly they hadnāt succeeded in killing Vecna. By the time they find the old ranger station Eddie is trying desperately not to crumble to his knees. Wounds still oozing lazily. Pushing himself through dressing the few wounds that were still open, Eddie can only thank whoever was watching over them the station was still stocked.
Seating himself on the floor near Dean, he spends a good few minutes pleading with him to let him take care of the sluggishly bleeding wounds. He can tell by the look on Deanās face touching him without warning wouldnāt be a good idea. So when the hand bleeding the most is extended to him, he considers it a victory.
āHey, pretty boy. We should probably get out of here soon. Weāre going to need more first aid supplies and food.ā Eddie also had no idea what sort of relief was going on given the storm that seemed to be hovering over Hawkins. The last thing they needed was to be found by the wrong person.

The sight of the sandwich has a new grin forming on his lips. Accepting it happily, he dumps his bag into the chair closest to him. A laugh leaves him at the exasperated sounds that leaves Dean. Well then. Clearly they weren't Dean's cameras. Good to know. And the confirmation that Dean had definitely not put them up has him laughing harder.
"Oh no," he starts still laughing. "I ain't no snitch, babe. Can't have the kids hating me before I even meet them." If Dean wanted to know where they were, he was going to have to go looking for them. Eddie wasn't about to make his life easier. That wasn't how they worked. At least not when they weren't working a hunt together. As much as Dean loved messing with him. Eddie loved messing with Dean. And damn did Dean make it easy sometimes.
Pulling himself up onto the counter (because chairs are not an option), he sets into consuming the sandwich. "So, what are the kids like?" He doubts that Dean will give him enough to actually be prepared to run into them. But something was better than nothing. Vigilante and tech head weren't much to go on. And yet Eddie knew that he would have to tread a least a little lighter than he would have before. The last thing that he wanted was for two clearly highly trained kids to decide that they wanted to kick his ass.
"And I mean real details, or I'll tell them all of the embarrassing things you've done." It wasn't much of a threat, but Eddie knew a good number of things that Dean would likely never want to see the light of day. He's hoping that is enough to keep Dean from feeding him false information in an attempt to embarrass him.
Though, even then, he'd be treading carefully with all of it.
--- the sort of lightness dean felt around eddie was almost unreal to dean. that weight that he always carried with him could be set aside, even if it was only for a moment. eventually he'd pick it up again, even with eddie by his side, but when they first got back together there was no denying that dean was practically walking on air. eddie just intrinsically understood him. it had been like that since they had met. eddie just saw right through him and instead of leaving him feeling raw and open dean just felt cared for and safe. he would do anything for eddie and in turn he knew eddie would do the same. to say that he was glad eddie was there was a huge understatement. if anyone else saw him right now they might think he was under the influence of some sort of drug but it was funny, he felt more like himself around eddie than he had in a long time.
"they're kids here," dean insisted. he took that very seriously. dean didn't have a childhood. he was too busy being a child solider and raising his little brother for that. eddie was right, though. neither jason or tim had much of a childhood either. which was why dean was dead set on making up for it. "as much as i can get 'em to be anyway," he smiled fondly.
in reaction to eddie's shove dean over sold it with a stumble and a wounded look on his face that lasted all of half a second. he did look aghast, but that had nothing to do with with the returned shove. "oh i don't think so, babycakes. nothing is as cool as my ride and you know it." the pat to his cheek and the blown kiss only earned eddie a middle finger from dean but there was still his ever present grin. his jaw was going to ache by the end of the night if not sooner but he couldn't bring himself to care.
he didn't bother to respond to the last thing eddie said before he was jogging off and jingling the whole way. he couldn't hold in his laughter. he knew it must have taken eddie practice to not make noise because he just couldn't give up the chains but dean had long since given up on trying to convince him otherwise.
while eddie went and got his wheels dean fished through fridge and grabbed out some cold cuts to make a quick sandwich for him. obviously he was still going to make them a proper meal but after you were on the road for as long as they were food was always a good thing. as soon as eddie was back through the door dean was handing it over but his comment about cameras just about had dean fumbling it.
"god dammit," he sighed but there was no real heat behind it. at this point dean knew it was basically a pointless battle. there was no stopping tim when it came to things like this. well, not unless maybe he mooned them again. "that'll be kid number two. tech head can't leave well enough alone. where are they?" he was going to at least flip them off. dean did like making tim laugh after all.

Swaying slightly as he's shoved, it doesn't even touch the grin that's still plastered on his face. His cheeks were starting to ache now but like hell he would even consider stopping. The elation he was feeling at the mere sight of Dean had to go somewhere and he had long since learned how to stop physically bouncing with it. Though those tactics seemed to melt away when the other was around. Eddie was sure that everything he'd started to employ to keep himself alive would be void by the end of the day. It was entirely too easy to be so utterly himself around Dean.
"You're such an asshole," he snorts. "If they're anything like we were at that age there's no way in hell they've been kids in a long time." Eddie didn't have to be well versed in the idea of vigilante kids to know that they weren't okay. The trauma that that kind of thing caused was far too similar to just about everything that he and Dean had suffered for the majority of their lives. Yet, he couldn't even deny that those kids finding Dean when they did wasn't going to be one of the best things ever to happen to them.
It had very much been the best thing for him.
"Hey, who said I was in trouble at the time." He most certainly was, but that was hardly the point. Making Dean work for some of the lore was the part of their relationship that was the most fun.
Of course, Eddie also can't lie to Dean. Which would always come back to bite him in the ass, every time. Taking the moment that Dean was distracted by poking him, Eddie shoves him gently in retaliation. "First of all, my ride is just as cool as your precious Impala. Second, how dare you assume that I am causing trouble. I came here because someone missed my ass. So don't be so rude." A hand lifts to pat Dean's cheek before backing out the door once more and blowing him a kiss.
"Also, I totally came here solely for your pretty face."
He doesn't wait for Dean to respond, just jogs his way back through the trees making entirely too much noise now. Dean had always given him shit for the amount of chains and rings that he wore. Determined that he would give them away. Serves him right for getting snuck up on this time. It only takes him a few minutes to pull into the too small driveway and spills out of the drivers seat. He doesn't bother to grab any of his bigger stuff. Just a small bug out bag that he'd been living out of for the last few days. It's lighter now, having used most of the clean clothes in it. Thankful that he was always overprepared now.
"Didn't know you finally stepped into the future. When'd you finally accept that sometimes cameras are the best first defense?"
--- it really had been too long since he'd seen eddie. life had a way of getting insanely busy, dean's especially, but he was glad he decided enough was enough. he hadn't smiled this much in a long time and eddie had barely made it through the door. if it was anyone else he would have been a lot more reserved but eddie always had a way of disarming him. through all their times as friends eddie had seen him through a lot and dean had seen eddie through just as much. why would he bother hiding how glad he was to see him?
"yeah that's me. always slacking off when it comes to protecting a place." of course that was a joke. aside from all the weapons (and not all of them his at this point) there was all the usual warding and traps you could expect. plus a few tricks dean liked to keep hidden up his sleeve.
eddie's reaction was exactly what dean had been looking for. he started cracking up and shaking his head. "i had to see the look on your face. they're also not exactly kids. one is 19 and the other one is 17. still kids to me though," he chuckled. "also why am i not surprised that's happened to you? i told you that you get into plenty of shit without me." dean playfully shoved him. who knew what eddie got up to without him. dean knew eddie could handle himself. they had basically been to hell and back together so hearing he got strung up before didn't really worry him. it only amused him. whoever got eddie in that position probably lived to regret it. if they lived.
"i think you'd come all this way to see my pretty face and come see a good metal show," he corrected with a bright grin. "go get your stupid rig then so you can shower and change. i'll make us something to eat and you can tell me about what trouble you've actually been up to. 'cause i know you're not telling me something," dean dropped casually with a little poke to eddie's side. "don't think i forgot."

The normal reaction when your feet were no longer touching the ground would be to resist. However, the greeting was so common for the two of them that Eddie didnāt even flinch when boots left solid ground. He just tightened his grip on Dean and allowed him to do whatever. It would likely look ridiculous to anyone else. Two grown men standing in a doorway acting like children. But that was just who they were at this point in life. Once returned to his feet he canāt help but laugh at the accusation. āCourse I did. Canāt have you slackinā on me.ā
The information dropped on him ever so casually has him stopping in his tracks. Dragging Dean to stop with him. Of course Eddie had no real idea what he was expecting when Dean had said that he had picked up a couple kids. The other had a soft spot for the underdog. So he assumed they were just kids like them. āYou fuckinā asshole. Shoulda know there was shit you werenāt telling me. But it wouldnāt be the first time Iād been strung up like that.ā For the most part he was talking about past hunts. But heād let Deanās mind run with that information for a little bit.
Scanning the cabin, Eddie can tell that it wasnāt just Dean living there. Heād known the other hunter more than long enough to know what belonged to him and what didnāt. It was nice that, despite hating the location, Dean had managed to carve out a little place for himself. Equipped with a couple of other people willing to put up with the wild ride that was Dean Winchester.
āI canāt believe youād even ask me that. You think I drove four days for just your pretty face? Iād fist fight a vampire for a shower though.ā As much as Eddie loved being on the road, it was nice to post up somewhere and shower it all off. Especially now that he was planning on sticking around for a bit. Dean canāt just tell him that heās considering putting down roots finally and not think that Eddie wouldnāt be a thorn in his side for ages.
Ah well. At least he was closer to Wayne here. That was a subject better handled when they both had a beer in their hand, however.
Hands still at the sound of feet hitting the floor. Unable to curb the smile that stretches across his lips. He can picture Dean stalking towards the door, gun in hand and the most serious look on his face. It was predictable and kind of adorable if you asked Eddie. Dean was, despite his own loud protests, a creature of habit. Though the fact that Eddie couldn't pin down what might have changed with the added factors of kids; it has him standing to pick the lock. Most would have crouched meaning that if Dean decided to shoot first he'd have been struck in the shoulder ā or worse the head. Standing at least gave him the advantage of remaining unharmed or with a good chance of survival.
Suddenly the door is reefed open. The barrel of a gun greeting him and hung in the air for a long moment before dropping. The grin on his lips never once falters. If anything it grows wider and far more mischievous as Dean curses his name.
Really Dean should have known.
A laugh sounds as he allows himself to succumb to the hug. Returning it with such bone crushing force that one would think the pair were returning from the dead. Not this time. It was just an extended separation.
"Just testin' ya," he teases. Voice muffled by Dean's shoulder, hardly ready to let him go just yet. A breath leaves him as fingers grip at the back of Dean's flannel. "Fuckin' missed you, dickhead."
#⤠reply#( they deserve all the nice things )#( and each other )#( two traumatized old men and a couple of traumatized teens )#( what could go wrong lol )

--- there were a lot of things in life dean never thought he would have. being a hunter didn't allow for a lot of things. hunters didn't get families and yet here he was looking after a couple vigilantes he considered his kids. hunters also didn't get to keep friends but eddie munson had long since proved that fact wrong. dean considered himself lucky to be afforded those two good things in life.
just like eddie should have considered himself lucky that dean had learned to not shoot first and ask questions later.
usually dean would be out on a job or out getting some sort of trouble but he knew that eddie should be rolling into town any day now so he was sticking close to home. it had been too long since he'd last seen his friend. it seemed like it only ever happened in bursts between impossible moments but for once it was on their terms. dean always had been grateful for the little things like that.
feet kicked up with his ankles crossed, dean seemed to be the picture of relaxation reading his old copy of dragon's of autumn twlight; and he was until he heard the familiar soft sound of a lock being messed with. he was on his feet in an instant. the 1911 he always kept close was in his hands and he was by the door in a few seconds flat. he had no idea who the hell would be out in the middle of no where trying to break into his run down cabin but he quickly flung the door open, gun drawn, and found out.
there was a stretch of dead silence. dean had the gun pointed right at eddie's head and then in a heartbeat the weapon was dropped to his side and dean's shoulders were drooping.
he should have fucking known.
"god dammnit eddie," he laughed. he couldn't even be mad at him for a moment. they both knew he would have done the same thing or worse. dean reached out and pulled eddie into his arms, thumping him on his back in a classic 'winchester' hug. "you fucking asshole."

Three days. It was only supposed to take three days to make is way across the country. Yet somehow there he was on day four of driving and only now was he anywhere near the city limits of Gotham. It looms like a storm on the horizon. Threatening and dark as Eddie draws closer and closer. Something about it makes his skin crawl. A familiar feeling creeping up his spine and making the scars that litter his skin itch.
It would be worth it, he reminds himself. He's been through near literal hell and come out the other side. He could handle a less than ideal city in favor of seeing his favorite human being again. Eddie finds himself more than amused by the location of the cabin Dean had holed himself up in. It was entirely fitting for who Dean was as a human being.
Cutting the engine a good jog away from the cabin, Eddie can't help but snicker to himself as he slips out the door. It wouldn't be him showing up without screwing with Dean a little bit. It had been a long long time since either of them had been shot when they decided to mess with each other. Eddie is banking on the fact that Dean will think twice and shoot once this time. Was it smart to sneak up on a hunter? Absolutely not. Yet that never stops Eddie from creeping through the trees.
There's only a small thought spared to the idea that the kids Dean had mentioned might also be at the cabin. What better way to meet good old Uncle Eddie than watching him scare the shit out of Dean. Calloused fingers curl about the door handle, hardly surprised to find it locked. Good. The time it would take him to pick it would be more than enough to set Dean on edge with the noise.
Prepare yourself Winchester, the wife is home.
