WK12 - Final Post and summary
Reflection
Throughout the project, I harnessed the power of video manipulation techniques, transforming ordinary footage into extraordinary visual experiences. Reflecting on the lectures and discussions from the initial weeks, I learned the importance of blending modes, mirroring, and layer stacking in creating captivating visual effects. The use of AI generative tools was also utilized for the BPD play, creating hyperlapse footage with morphing architecture through frame-by-frame animation.

Creative Practice
I was thrilled to have had the unique opportunity to contribute to the visual elements of a play focused on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). This project not only offered a chance to engage with a vital social issue but also served as an invaluable gateway to gaining industry experience and collaborating with professionals from diverse disciplines.
Tumblr media
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Working on this project allowed me to collaborate with professionals from various disciplines such as theatre, storytelling, and other design fields. This interplay of ideas and perspectives undoubtedly enriched my creative practice.
Narrative Visualization: Creating visuals for the play required translating emotions, experiences, and complex narratives into compelling visual representations. This was an exciting challenge that allowed me to explore storytelling through a visual lens.
Industry Exposure: This opportunity to work on a real theatre production was a significant step towards gaining valuable industry experience. It provided insight into the processes, standards, and expectations of the professional world.
Technical Mastery
A significant part of my project involved mastering the technical aspects of video manipulation within DaVinci Resolve Studio. I worked with blending modes, offset adjustments, and layer stacking, utilizing the software's advanced capabilities. The technical skills I developed were pivotal in bringing my creative ideas to life and achieving the desired visual effects.
Tumblr media
The project was a testament to the intricate interplay between technical expertise and creative innovation in the world of video manipulation. It involved a lot of experimenting because there is not much information online about many of the topics I was exploring, meaning there was a lot of time spent experimenting with different effects, which I felt really developed my understanding of the software I was using.
In conclusion, this project has been a remarkable journey of exploration and growth. I've not only gained practical skills but also a deeper appreciation for the power of video as a medium for creative expression. As I look back on this project, I'm excited to continue pushing the boundaries of video manipulation using DaVinci Resolve Studio and using it as a means to convey complex ideas and emotions.

WK11 - final touches and colour grading
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some feedback I got on the relief cloud tank footage was the colour red was very harsh when talking about the topic of self-harm and was very direct, by colour grading specific colour ranges in the video I was able to change the colour of the main red ink but keep the edges bleeding with red wich gave an interesting effect.

WK10/11 - Finished BPD Visuals, and colour grading
This week was the final editing of the visuals for the production there is still time for colour grading and some final touches before the show,
Colour Grading examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tested several LUTs and also using Davinci's colour grading tab to boost specific colour such as making the sky bluer and the gold on the bridge more saturated and vibrant, the end result really enhanced the footage and made and also used this to match the drone footage the my footage that i produced making them feel like they were taken on the same camera.

WK9 - Relief
Tumblr media
I experimented with overlapping footage and different blending modes. The blending modes stacked on top of each other transformed the ink into a mesmerising dance of colours and shapes. wich really enhances the footage and and gives an intersting effect which makes the visuals much more captivating, i am going to continue exploring this direction

WK7-streamlining and creating
Week 7 consisted mostly of creating polished videos to give a perhaps shorter than the final version but higher quality than the prototypes and pro of concepts I have made thus far.
one polished piece was made for a demonstration for the BPD play i am helping with, to get feedback and a clearer direction to what i need to create,
this was edited to a piece of music for the play
youtube
feedback for this was technically it is very impressive and visually stunning but it edges into other mental conditions such as psychosis and is less about BPD itself Although iu agree with this I also find that editing too the music tends to give this impression as it is extremely chaotic.
next was the same footage edited to a more relaxed piece of music to show how the visuals can be recontextualised.

WK6-Final Proof of concept
youtube
this is the final proof of concept, This video contains the main hyper-lapse and AI generative fill elements that I want to include (only including basic editing and transitions) although it is very short it has taken quite a substantial amount of trial and error to get to this point and I have learned a lot getting to this point on how to get more out of the footage and how I can make my life easier in post productions. for example, my process of taking photos for the hyperlapse was very inconsistent meaning I had to do allot of stabilisation and removal of some frames because the motion was inconsistent making it a smooth experience. this being said I am very confident I can make a larger piece from this as a building block.
(Side note video works best if u right click the player and click loop :) )

WK5 - taking photos and experimenting
Tumblr media
most of this week's work has consisted of going out and taking photos, so far have taken about 300 photos and still need to stabilise and add ai generation, should have this all done for next Tuesday to get feedback

WK5- What is hyper lapse and what am i going to use it for
Hyperlapse is a captivating filming technique that involves creating time-lapse videos with camera movement. By capturing images at different locations over time and then stitching them together. When coupled with AI-generated frames, hyper-lapse gains surreal dimensions. AI can enhance frames with dreamlike elements, altering reality to evoke surrealism. Morphing landscapes, transforming objects, or distorting time can turn ordinary scenes into abstract visual poetry. The AI can generate unique frames that seamlessly blend with the original footage.

WK5 - first hyperlapse test
my first test of hyperlapse. the stabilisation isn't as perfect as i could have got it and I want to experiment with different optical flow plugins to make it smoother but is a good proof of concept

WK4 - Tech test and lighting example
youtube
youtube
BEYOND was performed at the Signal Festival, Prague in 2017. It consisted of a 35m long tunnel fitted with lighting and speakers. The waves of light and sound immersed participants in a perfectly synced, surreal experience.
The installation uses great use of optical illusions to give the impression of movement this is something I want to integrate into my piece as the action of the ink drops splashing into the water could also be simulated by the lights as well.

TUNDRA - NOMAD live (extract)
youtube
A great example of linking an audio-visual relationship, I really enjoy how the ambient light spill from the projector fills the whole room. this is something I really want to incorporate into the lighting design at the capitol as I am mostly using the lights (at the capitol) in order to enhance the video and immerse the audience in the video more and enhance the audio-visual realationship.
