I Love Yoo - Why it’s an interesting read, and why you should read it
[I do not own any of the images, gifs, or videos used in my posts; these visuals are used only for entertainment.]
Because exams are almost coming to a close for me, I decided I should spend my time reading comics on Webtoons (there’s some really good stuff out there). Ghost Teller and Tower of God are in there too, but I started reading another one that has piqued my interest for a while; I Love Yoo, by Quimchee.

I Love Yoo tells the story of Shin-Ae Yoo, a high schooler who’s abrasive, colloquial, and loves eating fast food; she strives to get good grades and into a good university, with the prospects of supporting her father and possibly a better life. Throughout the story are constant peeks into her past, and the numerous instances of adversity she has faced and continues to face. A key phrase that remains is “I’ll be strong”. She’s independent because of this, but is quite rash and harsh. She does not rely on others, and honesty is one of her many weapons. She is never someone she isn’t, but aims to have a life without any hassles. She only has three close friends (one of them is studying college abroad), and is against being in romantic relationships (or any kind of relationship) because of her fierce independence.
Yeong-gi is a cheery, outgoing person, who takes immediate interest in Shin-Ae. He’s the kind of guy most would get along with, but he’s human too; he has insecurities, and his family that doesn’t work to resolve this. His close friends give him the enjoyment he needs, and is distant with his own girlfriend.
Kousuke Hirahara is another young adult who happens to be Yeong-gi’s older brother; staunch, well-dressed, and wordy, Kousuke works in his father’s business as a young exec, having also taken interest in Shin-Ae on separate occasions from Yeong-gi. Him and Yeong-gi are constantly at odds, which Shin-Ae witnesses firsthand.
This story is interesting in three different mediums; Plot, Characters, and Music.
The story is well done. Shin-Ae has many hangups that live with her everyday (that are justified), a lot of problems that are also real. Her independence complex (as well as her tendency to be unnecessarily harsh) masks her kindness, and her ability to be insightful. The plot is brought out through Shin-Ae’s character, which makes it intriguing. Yeong-gi and Kousuke’s family is a plotline that contrasts her life (as both stories constantly intertwine), showing discord where you would not expect it. These three are very complex characters, which Quimchee does an amazing job bringing out.
The characters are all memorable, fun, as well as being complex. There are many realistic aspects to this serie, such as disagreements with friends, pranking (which implies how close characters are in the story), unintended social outings, and other spontaneous events. Shin-Ae’s best friends, Maya and Rika, contrast how harsh Shin-Ae normally is, but also show that Shin-Ae has the capacity to make friends; in other words, people that welcome her. These are two people that consider her close and accept her, warts and all. Yeong-gi’s friends function similarly in the story; Soushi, his rugged, loud, and delinquent-looking friend is competitive (but also quite insightful), while his other friend Dieter is shy, timid, and extremely courteous. Like Maya and Rika are to Shin-Ae, Soushi and Dieter tend to contrast Yeong-gi, creating a balance in the friendship dynamic.
As a final tidbit, the music (provided by KennyComics), adds a level of realism and emotion to the story that you normally don’t feel when reading a comic. Each theme perfectly suits the chapter, the mood of the characters, and other plot devices.
This story (at least for me), has been great in showing human error, emotions, and other complex feelings that comprise social situations, friendships, and other dynamics that occur in everyday life. It’s mundane, but in a spontaneous fashion. The comedy is also well done, mostly from Shin-Ae’s perspective. It’s refreshing to see a story evoke real situations, as well as characters that are justified in the way they react in normally cliched scenarios. While I don’t think this series will entirely shy away from certain tropes, it certainly does not rely on them. The type of characters introduced thus far can be considered archetypal; the way in which they are presented, and how they fit into Shin-Ae’s story is both fun and interesting, yet filled with reality. Reading this does make you think.

Gorilla
Gorilla had a very unfortunate accident. His arm and head were torn off and he lost and eye, nose, and part of his face!
Here are the diagnosis photos I received from his person:

Fortunately, he looked quite treatable. We started with a spa, because he was already going to need new stuffing:

Then he got his heart and was restuffed:

I thought he was back together and sent these photos:

His person wrote “ Wow he looks amazing!” …. but he used to have ears, can you add some? Apparently, the gorilla had lost he ears entirely! So I made a small sample ear and put it temporarily in place:

“Perfect!” said his person. So I affixed it firmly and did the other one as well. Here he is ready to fly home:

Sturdy with 100% scent, 20/20 vision, and perfect hearing again!

#Good books save lives
AUGUST FANTASY TBR
I’ll follow this one I PROMISE!!!
I’m not sure I’m going to keep up themed months, but all the books I wanted to read happened to be fantasy, so I’m going to roll with it. All the books I plan on reading also happen to be series/duologies/trilogies and marathoning series is a habit I’m trying to keep going. Because of how much work I have (full days, every day, for two week now :((( )I might not be posting as much and it might be a struggle to read them all. But I have a short plane trip coming up so maybe that’ll give me some time. So without further ado:
Wintersong Duology, by S . Jae-Jones
“All her life, Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, dangerous Goblin King. They’ve enraptured her mind and spirit and inspired her musical compositions. Now eighteen and helping to run her family’s inn, Liesel can’t help but feel that her musical dreams and childhood fantasies are slipping away. But when her own sister is taken by the Goblin King, Liesl has no choice but to journey to the Underground to save her. Drawn to the strange, captivating world she finds–and the mysterious man who rules it–she soon faces an impossible decision. With time and the old laws working against her, Liesl must discover who she truly is before her fate is sealed.”
So not only is this based off of German folklore, its heavily based on the 1986 movie Labyrinth. Which three years later I’m still slightly obsessed with. Wintersong is actaully going to be a re-read for me because I read it last year, but even though I enjoyed it I never got around to reading the sequel. I’m about a third of the way into it now. This TBR should be called “Books I’ve been meaning to read for years but haven’t because dumb brain”
The Earthsea Cycle, by Ursula K. Le Guin
“Ged, the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea, was called Sparrowhawk in his reckless youth. Hungry for power and knowledge, Sparrowhawk tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death’s threshold to restore the balance.”
I bought the first novel about two years ago and never read it. But a few months ago I got it back from storage so I NEED TO READ IT NOW! I’ve been living for classic fantasies and I think this is just what I need. Fortunately most of the books are fairly short which is why I’m hoping I’ll get through all of them.
The Witchlands series, by Susan Dennard
“Young witches Safiya and Iseult have a habit of finding trouble. After clashing with a powerful Guildmaster and his ruthless Bloodwitch bodyguard, the friends are forced to flee their home.Safi must avoid capture at all costs as she’s a rare Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so Safi must keep it hidden - lest she be used in the struggle between empires. And Iseult’s true powers are hidden even from herself. In a chance encounter at Court, Safi meets Prince Merik and makes him a reluctant ally. However, his help may not slow down the Bloodwitch now hot on the girls’ heels. All Safi and Iseult want is their freedom, but danger lies ahead. With war coming, treaties breaking and a magical contagion sweeping the land, the friends will have to fight emperors and mercenaries alike. For some will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.”
Honestly I wasn’t planning on reading this series this month. But when I was at the library all three of the books were there, so I took it as a sign. Also I follow @stdennard on Tumblr and Instagram and so I’ve been seeing a lot about this series on the interwebs. I read the first book she wrote Something Strange and Deadly last year and absolutely loved it, so if this is even better I’m excited!
So that’s everything I plan on reading this month. I don’t know if I’ll get to it all but I’m going to definitely focus what free time I have on reading. Since these series are already popular and well known I won’t be reviewing them or posting about them as much. But I think I’ll take this time as an opportunity to maybe talk about these series with my followers and the people I follow. I want to do more book discussions (friendly ones of course). I will definitely be open to asks and messages!
