Bathroom Renovation Hobart
Bathroom renovations can be tricky if you are not an experienced tradesperson. It’s best to hire skilled and professional tradies for major jobs like plumbing and electrical work.
Depending on the extent of your changes, you may need to apply for a permit. This will ensure that the work is monitored and approved by a qualified building practitioner.
Waterproofing
Waterproofing is an essential part of building or renovating a shower. Without it, your walls drink in moisture and damage the structure of your home. It’s also expensive to fix and often requires professional help.
You should always have a waterproofing membrane installed by a licensed and certified expert when you build or remodel a shower. It’s also necessary in existing bathrooms that show signs of moisture damage, such as crumbling grout or peeling paint.
You can choose from liquid, sheet, or foam wallboards as your waterproofing solution. While liquid is the fastest and easiest to install, sheet membranes and foam backers are more robust. Sheet and foam membranes don’t require a cement board to be used as a base, which saves time and money on construction. They can also be combined to increase durability. They’re especially good options for high-risk areas like showers. They’re also ideal for incorporating design features such as niche storage and built-in shower seating.
Expansion Joint Replacement
Expansion joints are a vital part of your home’s structure. They help your building withstand the stresses of thermal movement without damaging the integrity of the concrete or tiled surfaces. However, like any other joint they need to be protected and sealed properly to avoid issues.
When a concrete expansion joint becomes damaged it will not expand as it should, this will lead to cracking of the surrounding masonry and eventually the loss of support for your structure. This can be extremely dangerous and should always be repaired as soon as possible.
Expansion joint repairs can be accomplished with the use of Belzona’s specialized concrete repair products. This includes their Trim-A-Slab system which uses a compliant filler strip to allow the expansion joint to move while withstanding traffic and environmental conditions. This is unlike conventional mastics or caulk which are sensitive to surface contaminants, have a short tooling time and cannot be used in wide joints.
Tile Repairs
Tiles are fairly durable and don’t crack as easily as other materials like wood. But they do get worn down over time, especially if they are exposed to water and heat.
Grout is the material that fills in the cracks between tiles. It is a mixture of cement, sand and often a colour tint. It’s hard to avoid cracked and discolored grout over the years, but it can be repaired or replaced. Regrouting is the process of removing the old grout and then replacing it with fresh new grout.
Mold in a shower can be unsightly and dangerous for your family’s health. It can also be very difficult to remove from surfaces, especially if the mold has soaked into the grout and coloured it.
Tile Cleaners Hobart can help you with this by stripping, cleaning and resealing your tiles. This will prevent & reduce staining and help protect your investment for years to come. We use specialised industrial equipment and cleaning solutions designed specifically for tiles & grout to provide you with the best service available in Hobart.
Tile Replacement
If your shower consists of tiles that have been damaged, cracked or sunk into the floor you may need to replace them. Some tile can be glued back in place, but others are best replaced altogether.
Adding new tiles to your bathroom can also make a significant impact on the overall look of your bathroom. You can choose a wide range of sizes, shapes and materials to fit your style. Some are even made of glass and are very shiny, reflecting light into the room.
When choosing a tradie to do your job, try and get recommendations from friends or family members who have used them before. This will ensure you’re more likely to end up with a tradie who provides quality workmanship, is easy to work with and has a good sense of integrity. It’s also a great idea to have some spare tiles on hand in case you need to repair any damage during the renovation process.

Tips For Successful Tile Renovations
Tumblr media
Tile renovations are a great way to increase the value of your home while giving it a beautiful makeover. Tile is available in a wide range of colors and textures to suit any style theme.
However, if you’re not careful, tile work can be very tricky and time consuming. Here are some tips to help you get your tile renovations done right.
Choose the Right Tiles
The tiles you choose are an important part of your renovation project. They affect the style, comfort and function of your space. They also come in a wide variety of materials, colours and textures. There are many options to consider, but making the right choice is essential.
The first step is to decide what kind of tile you want. Then consider where you will use it. For example, a ceramic or porcelain tile would work well on counters and floors while a glass tile might look great in a shower.
Next, think about the colour and texture of your tile. Smooth surfaces are easier to clean while rougher textures with lots of crevices may require more frequent scrubbing. Finally, don’t forget about the grout lines. The colour and thickness of the grout line can really change the way a tile looks.
Plan Your Layout
When installing tile, it’s important to take the time to plan your layout. This will help ensure that your finished product looks clean and professional.
For example, if you want to have full tiles on the wall around a tub or shower enclosure, make sure that opposite-end walls have the same size tiles so you don’t end up with a narrow strip of less-than-smooth tile at one end.
For a floor, you can use the same basic principles to create a clean, attractive design, with full tiles in prominent locations and cut tiles falling where they won’t draw attention. However, tiling a complex, diagonally set floor like this entry area riser and hallway leading into living and dining rooms requires some additional planning.
Prepare the Surface
While tile renovations can be a hugely beneficial upgrade, it’s important to take some time and care to ensure that the substrate is suitable for installation. This is true whether you are tiling a new bathroom, kitchen, or other room.
Surfaces must be sound and free of dust, dirt, oil, grease and other contaminants. Roughen smooth concrete surfaces by mechanical means and etch them with a specialised chemical before tiling.
Be sure to use long-sleeved clothing, eye protection and a respirator when breaking up existing tiles and removing wall dressings like wallpaper. This will generate a lot of dust and sharp tile shards which must be safely removed. This is a job best left to a professional contractor with the right tools and equipment.
Install the Tiles
Before you start laying tile, make sure your floor or wall can handle the weight of the material. If it cannot, install joists and a layer of cement backer board to prevent shifting or cracking over time.
Once you know your space’s area, put on your math hat and estimate how many tiles you will need for the whole job. It’s a good idea to pad that number by 10 percent to cover any waste or breakage that may occur during installation.
Begin laying your tiles in the pattern you’ve chosen. As you work, use plastic spacers to ensure uniform spacing between the rows of tile. Remember to lay full tiles first, and save cutting tiles to fit until you’ve finished installing the full tiles.
Clean the Surface
If the tiling in your home is in need of an update, you can use decals to add color or cover up broken tiles. If you want to change the overall look, a new coat of paint is also an option. Make sure to prep the space and clean thoroughly before painting.
Paint needs to dry completely before you can start using your kitchen or bathroom again. You may have to wait a week or two, depending on the size of the space.
If you’re going to paint over tile, select a neutral PH cleaning product that doesn’t contain any bleach or acid. A simple mix of vinegar and water can be used as a mild cleaner, or you can buy ready-to-use cleaners made for tile surfaces.

Mount Wellington
About Mount Wellington
Nestled in the southeast of Tasmania, Australia, Mount Wellington is a sight to behold. With a peak height of 1,271 metres above sea level, this mountain is a frequent recipient of snowfall, even during the summertime. Its lower slopes are shrouded in lush green forests, complete with crisscrossing walking trails and a few fire trails. But even if hiking isn’t your forte, that’s no problem! The mountain also boasts a sealed narrow road leading to the summit – a journey of about 22 kilometres from Hobart’s central business district. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Hobart, the Derwent estuary, and glimpses of the World Heritage Area nearly 100 kilometres away. Don’t miss out on noticing the cliff of dolerite columns known as the Organ Pipes – it’s a distinctive feature of Mount Wellington, after all.
Mount Wellington is an important site for broadcasting in Hobart and its surrounding areas, thanks to its location providing line-of-sight transmission. Back in 1960, two steel lattice towers were erected to deliver television services to Tasmania. These included the Post Master General tower, which stood 104m tall, and another tower owned by WIN Corporation, which remains to this day. The PMG tower faced difficulties with snow and ice, which led to a radome being installed in 1982 to protect the antennas. However, planning for a higher-quality tower began later on in the decade, culminating in the construction of the new concrete and steel Broadcast Australia tower in the mid-90s. This led to the PMG tower being demolished to make way for the new structure. Today, Mount Wellington continues to play a crucial role in the transmission of television and radio signals across Tasmania.

Battery Point
About Battery Point
Tucked away just south of Hobart’s bustling CBD lies Battery Point, a suburb steeped in rich history and overflowing with charm. As you climb up Kelly’s steps, a colonial-era pathway, you’ll find yourself wandering into a quaint world filled with stories of days gone by. The sandstone and weatherboard cottages that line the streets seem to have their personalities, exuding eccentric charm and character. And thanks to the suburb’s tight-knit layout, these homes sit nestled into the tiny lanes and alleyways, creating an atmosphere that feels both cosy and intriguing. Come take a stroll through Battery Point and discover all the stories and secrets it has to offer.
Nestled beside the River Derwent in Tasmania, Battery Point is a picturesque suburb with a rich history. Built-in 1804 as a maritime village, Battery Point gained its name due to the gun battery that stood there from 1818 onwards. This battery was designed to protect the town from any potential nautical threats, and its guns were fired to mark important events. However, in 1878 a review found that the battery’s location posed a danger to the surrounding residential areas. It was subsequently decommissioned and turned over to Hobart City Council as a place of recreation and amusement. Today, visitors can explore the area’s unique architecture, absorbing its rich history while enjoying the beauty of the parks and gardens.
What to do at Battery Point
Once a humble village known for its affordability, Battery Point has transformed into a sought-after address in Hobart’s real estate market. The picturesque suburb now welcomes visitors and locals alike, who are drawn to the area’s blend of old-world charm and contemporary style. Visitors can choose to experience Battery Point’s rich history by staying in one of the area’s many renovated cottages-turned-guest-houses, each offering a unique immersion into the quaint neighbourhood. With its proximity to popular tourist destinations like Salamanca and the Hobart waterfront, Battery Point is a neighbourhood with something for everyone.
Hampden Road is the heart of Battery Point, and it’s easy to see why. This main strip is home to some of Hobart’s best cafes, shops, and bakeries, all with a rustic charm that is hard to resist. The artisan bakery is a particular standout, with its rustic brickwork, timber flooring, and open glass front, creating a welcoming atmosphere that draws you in. But it’s not only traditional bakeries that are making waves in Battery Point, with a range of postmodern cafes now popping up among the historic buildings. From a quaint tea house that sources its ingredients straight from the garden to a kombi-inspired smoothie house that serves cold-pressed juice and smoothie bowls, there’s something for every taste. These new cafes might be a departure from the old-school meat and three vegs, but they still embody the charm and character that makes Battery Point so special.

Hobart Convict Penitentiary
About Hobart Convict Penitentiary
Discover a slice of Tasmania’s rich history at the Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site, nestled within the bustling heart of Hobart CBD. Here, the echoes of the past reverberate through the underground tunnels, solitary cells, and gallows that bear witness to the harsh realities of convict life in Van Diemen’s Land. Originally built as an extension to the Hobart Prison Barracks, the chapel’s imposing design boasted thirty-six solitary confinement cells beneath its floorboards. The polished architecture of Colonial Architect John Lee Archer is still visible to this day, standing as a testament to the hardships and struggles of those who were once imprisoned within its walls. By visiting the Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site, you can unlock the hidden secrets of this internationally significant convict site and gain a better understanding of Tasmania’s fascinating history.
Located in Hobart, Tasmania, the Hobart Convict Penitentiary, known to its residents as the Tench, was constructed in the early 1830s to keep up with the increasing number of convicts coming into the colony. Designed by Civil Engineer John Lee Archer, the prison saw over 50,000 male convicts pass through its gates during its time as a correctional facility. What was once a virtual prison city enclosed by high stone walls is now recognized as a place of historical significance. After the transportation of convicts had ended, the grounds were converted to serve other purposes, including Hobart’s Old Gaol and Supreme Court. The Hobart Convict Penitentiary represents a pivotal moment in Tasmanian and Australian history and continues to inspire interest in both locals and tourists alike.
What to do at Hobart Convict Penitentiary
Step into Tasmania’s dark and harrowing past with this guided tour, providing daytime access to courtrooms and tunnels that lead to the chapel. The immersive film experience, ‘Pandemonium’, projects a four-metre-tall image on the very walls where convicts once sat, providing a contextual understanding of Tasmania’s convict sites. Through the film, visitors will be transported back in time and explore the chaos of convict life in Van Dieman’s Land, connecting us to the journeys of our ancestors from their convictions, transportation, and beyond. This is a professional and informative tour, paying homage to a fascinating yet dark period of Tasmania’s history.
The site of the former Hobart Gaol offers a unique glimpse into Tasmania’s notoriously dark past. After the cessation of convict transportation, the gaol housed prisoners for over a century, with sections of the chapel later converted into Supreme Courts. The gaol’s macabre history is fully evident in the execution yard and gallows added to the site. Fortunately, the public can explore this storied location, and knowledgeable guides lead tours through the site’s maze of corridors. Visitors can also participate in various events, including the Ghost Tours and Pandemonium, a gripping Convict Film Experience. Whether for educational purposes or to satiate other interests, the gaol’s captivating past leaves a lasting impression on those who visit.

Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
About Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
The story of the Cascades Female Factory is one of both tragedy and resilience. As a former workhouse for female convicts in Van Diemen’s Land, it operated for nearly three decades before being decommissioned in 1856. Today, it is one of the 11 sites that make up the Australian Convict Sites, each of which offers a potent reminder of the forced migration of convicts and the development of punishment and reform on a global scale. However, what makes the Cascades Female Factory stand apart is its representation of the female experience. From its cramped cells to its austere workshops, it provides a glimpse into a world that was once unimaginable but is now invaluable in understanding the history of Australia’s penal colony system.
Despite the hardships that the women who passed through its gates had to endure, they also demonstrated great strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Their stories are ones of determination as they sought to rebuild their lives and overcome the challenges placed before them. Today, the Cascades Female Factory serves as both a tribute and a warning to humanity, showcasing the extremes of what can occur when justice and mercy are not properly balanced. As we reflect on this dark chapter in Australia’s past, we must also recognize the immense courage and fortitude of those who lived through it.
What to do at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
The history of the Cascades Female Factory is a stark reminder of the harsh reality of life for female convicts in Tasmania during the 19th century. While the intention behind the facility was admirable – to provide a safe and controlled environment for women convicts – the reality was quite different. Located in an area of damp swamp land and plagued by overcrowding and poor sanitation, disease and mortality rates were alarmingly high. Even before the Factory was purpose-built, some rooms in the Macquarie Street Gaol had been used as a temporary “Female Factory”. It’s a sobering reminder of the challenges and hardships faced by women in Tasmania’s convict era.
The history of the women and girls transported to Van Diemen’s Land is largely unknown, but this site provides a wealth of information on over 6,000 of them and the roughly 2,000 babies that were born within the factory walls. Their stories are both harrowing and inspiring, and they are interwoven with the First Nation’s stories of Palawa, a culture over 40,000 years old that was profoundly impacted by British colonization. The site offers a self-guided audio experience as well as access to the grounds and gallery. For a more in-depth exploration, additional tours are available throughout the day, including the Convict Women’s History Tour and the acclaimed drama. This site offers a unique opportunity to learn about an often-overlooked aspect of history and to reflect on the experiences of those who endured it.

Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum
About Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum
The Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum at Cape Denison stands as a tribute to the commitment and dedication of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-14. Its purpose is twofold, as it was built to generate funds for the continued conservation of the historic buildings at Cape Denison and as an educational facility to promote the enduring legacy of the AAE. Remarkably, the Museum is a meticulous replica of Mawson’s original base and serves as a testament to the courage and endurance of the men who braved the rough and frozen terrain of Antarctica. Visitors to the Museum can marvel at the sheer determination of the expedition members and learn about the harrowing sacrifices they made in the name of exploration. Its prime location on Hobart’s waterfront is a poignant reminder of the boundless potential of human endeavour and the unwavering desire to challenge the unknown.
The construction of the Replica Museum was a collaborative effort that relied on the generosity of many stakeholders. The Tasmanian Ports Authority provided a space for off-site construction, which was done in three sections to enable easy transportation to the final site. The Hobart City Council was pivotal in supporting the project by providing the land and securing the necessary funds. The Replica became a reality when the Federal Government contributed $350,000 in 2011, and many local businesses and individuals offered their time, goods, and goodwill to bring the project to fruition. With the Replica now standing as a testament to the generosity and community spirit of the people of Tasmania, visitors can appreciate the wonders of Tasmania’s maritime history.
What to do at Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum
Nestled on the outskirts of Hobart, Tasmania, the Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum is a world-class small museum that transports visitors back in time to the early 1900s. Here, they are given a unique opportunity to witness the daily lives of the Australian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) expeditioners who lived and worked in the treacherous conditions of Antarctica’s Cape Denison for two winters. The museum offers a remarkable exhibit of the authentic wooden huts that were built by Sir Douglas Mawson and his team of expeditioners as well as a range of artefacts that were discovered during the excavation of the site. From the intricate details of the expeditions living quarters to the tools they used daily, the Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum offers a glimpse into the true home of the blizzard and the courage of these brave explorers as they endured the harshest conditions on the planet.
The Mawson’s Huts Foundation is a remarkable organization dedicated to the preservation of historic huts located in the pristine wilderness of Cape Denison, Antarctica. The focus is ensuring that visitors can experience a fascinating glimpse into the “Heroic age” of Antarctic exploration and learn about the lives of the intrepid pioneers who called this remote and inhospitable region home. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to maintain and showcase artefacts and exhibits that help to provide a vivid picture of what life was like for early explorers. Visitors can explore the museum at their own pace or arrange a private tour for a more immersive experience. Additionally, the on-site gift shop offers a selection of unique items, allowing visitors to take home a souvenir that embodies their experience. MONA
About MONA
The Moorilla Museum of Antiquities, founded in 2001 by Tasmanian millionaire David Walsh, was closed in 2006 to undergo extensive renovations worth a staggering $75 million. The result was the birth of MONA, a new and exciting space for exhibiting modern and contemporary art. The official opening of MONA took place on 21 January 2011, alongside the third MOFO festival. 1,350 special guests attended the grand occasion, while 2,500 members of the public joined in the festivities by participating in a random ballot process. The evening event included impressive performances by bands such as The Cruel Sea, Health, and Wire, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
The MONA museum is a treasure trove of artistic works, housing over 1,900 pieces from David Walsh’s private collection. Its inaugural exhibition, Monanism, boasted an impressive array of art, including Australia’s largest modernist artwork, Sydney Nolan’s Snake mural, which was publicly displayed for the first time in Australia. Visitors are also treated to the fascinating display of Wim Delvoye’s Cloaca Professional, a machine that mimics the human digestive system by turning food into faeces and expelling it daily. Additionally, Stephen Shanabrook’s On the Road to Heaven, the Highway to hell, made of dark chocolate, is a haunting masterpiece that immortalizes the remains of a suicide bomber. Finally, Chris Ofili’s work showcased in the museum is a testament to his artistic prowess and a true sight to behold. The MONA museum is a must-visit for art enthusiasts seeking a unique and thought-provoking experience.
What to do at MONA
Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, offers a unique way to engage with art. Located along the river from Hobart, this museum features the $110m private art and antiquities collection of David Walsh. The subterranean architecture adds to the appeal of Mona. It also hosts a busy exhibitions program, which means visitors are treated to a constantly changing show of art. Mona is not just about art; it offers much more, including the Moorilla winery, two restaurants, several bars, accommodation pavilions, and Moo Brew, an off-site brewery. Two festivals are also held here, adding an extra layer of excitement to this fascinating and dynamic venue. Mona is a place where visitors can truly engage with art and have fun while doing so.
As the seasons shift and the cooler months approach, Tasmania’s vibrant art scene comes to life with the launch of our annual winter festivals. At Mona, we pride ourselves on offering a diverse range of events that showcase the best of what Hobart has to offer. Our summer festival, Mona Foma, combines a unique blend of music and art. In contrast, our Dark Mofo winter festival explores the mystique of traditional winter solstice rituals through immersive installations, performances and exhibits. Our location in Berriedale is just a short drive from Hobart’s bustling centre, or for those looking to add some adventure to their journey, our fast ferries offer a scenic 25-minute ride from Brooke Street Pier in Salamanca. Whether you’re a seasoned festival-goer or just looking to experience something new and exciting, Mona’s winter festivals are not to be missed.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
About Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
Nestled on the banks of Hobart’s waterfront lies a treasure trove of scientific and artistic treasures – the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. Steeped in history and cultural significance, this museum is the second oldest of its kind in Australia. The museum’s origins can be traced back to the Royal Society of Tasmania, established in 1843. Since then, the TMAG has become a leading cultural institution, preserving and showcasing Tasmanian culture’s rich heritage and diversity. Whether you’re a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply curious about the world around you, a visit to the TMAG is an absolute must.
The Museum’s collection is a comprehensive and in-depth portrayal of Tasmania’s rich history, from its prehistoric geological evolution to modern times. It offers visitors an impressive array of exhibits that brings to life the different eras the island has experienced. The collection takes visitors on a journey of Tasmania’s past, exploring the protohistory display from the inter-glacial periods, the local fauna, British settlement, the colonial period, Tasmania’s past as a penal colony, and more. The art gallery also has a fine collection of Colonial and Contemporary Art that exhibits the island’s cultural richness throughout history. The Museum’s attention to detail in presenting Tasmania’s past makes it a must-visit attraction for anyone looking to learn about Tasmania’s amazing history.
What to do at Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
Located in Tasmania, TMAG offers an unforgettable experience to visitors of all interests and ages. Whether you are a family looking for an educational experience, a tourist curious about Tasmania’s history or an art lover, TMAG is the perfect destination. With over 2,000 square metres of public and exhibition spaces to explore, there is so much to discover here. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to join the free guided tours or browse the galleries to experience TMAG’s rich blend of permanent collections, touring and temporary exhibitions, and special displays. This museum is a true gem that offers something unique to every visitor.
When you step into the museum, the history and stories of Tasmania come alive. But did you know that it was officially created in 1848? That’s right; the museum has been around for over 170 years! The collections it holds, however, date much earlier. The Royal Society of Tasmania, the Mechanics’ Institution of Hobart, the Van Diemen’s Land Agricultural Society, and the Van Diemen’s Land Scientific Society all tried establishing museums before 1848. The Mechanics Institution had the most success, but we don’t know much about what happened to the other attempts. Nevertheless, the museum we have now is a testament to the resilience and dedication of those who came before us. Explore the halls and see for yourself the wonders of Tasmania’s past and present.

Small Bathroom Remodels
Tumblr media
Small bathroom remodels are a great way to add value to your home. But before you start swinging that sledgehammer it’s important to plan out your project.
This DIY bathroom from Domestic Blonde didn’t have much that was wrong with it, but the homeowners wanted a freshening up and a cozier vibe. New beaded-board wainscoting and paint infused the space with style.
Planning
Many homeowners think that remodeling a small bathroom will be quicker, easier and less expensive than a large bath. That may be true if you don’t upgrade plumbing fixtures and you keep the project simple by performing the simplest DIY jobs that won’t blow your budget.
The key to success with any remodel is careful planning. This means taking precise measurements to ensure that the products you buy will fit. It also means using a digital bathroom planner to try out layout options before you spend money on materials or hiring contractors.
One trick to make a small bathroom feel larger is to visually raise the ceiling. This can be accomplished with a simple cosmetic improvement like replacing heavy crown molding with narrower boards painted to match the ceiling. Or it can be as complicated as switching out an in-swing door for a pocket door that won’t bang into furniture and people.
Budget
The cost of a small bathroom remodel depends on two major factors: labor and materials. Contractor costs run from $300 to $500 per day, and material expenses range from simple paint jobs to new flooring.
The type of tile you choose can significantly affect your remodeling costs. Basic vinyl tiles are less expensive than textured marble slabs. Other common choices include ceramic or natural stone.
Consider the timing of your renovation to reduce costs. During summer, many homeowners begin remodeling projects, which increases the availability of workers and materials. It is also important to limit unexpected expenses such as rerouting electrical systems, which requires hiring an electrician.
Investing in a new bathtub or shower and upgrading the cabinets will add value to your home. Less costly upgrades include a fresh coat of paint and new hardware.
Design
Small bathrooms offer little wiggle room when it comes to design. Even small changes can make a big difference in how the room feels and functions.
Choosing a light, airy color and smart storage can instantly make a bathroom feel larger. Replacing bulky crown molding with narrower trim painted the same shade of white can visually raise the ceiling, while recessed lighting eliminates the line between wall and ceiling.
Clever wall storage keeps clutter at bay, allowing for an open floor plan and a clean look. Tuck toiletries and hand towels in baskets or jars to add visual interest. Using tile blocks to create a ledge for decorative accents is another easy-on-the-eye design trick. Removing a swinging door and replacing it with a bypass or sliding door is a great improvement for alcove showers too.
Materials
The most costly elements in a small bathroom remodel include bathtub or shower installations, sinks and countertops and new cabinets. More cosmetic touches, like a fresh coat of paint and hardware updates, are less expensive.
To keep costs down, opt for ready-made vanities and counters with built-in cabinets instead of fabricating custom ones. Similarly, skip the high-end backsplash and stick with inexpensive tile for wet areas and use more decorative materials on dry walls and ceilings.
Excessive demolition will drive up the price of a remodel, too, and moving fixtures like a tub or toilet raises labor costs. Adding a skylight, like this one from studioDIAA, can flood a powder room with natural light. These clever design tricks help small bathrooms feel bigger.
Installation
Once homeowners have sourced their materials and hired a contractor, it’s time to get started with the installation process. It’s crucial to follow local construction permit requirements and ensure that all changes to plumbing, electrical wiring or structural elements are approved by a licensed professional.
DIYers can often save on labor costs by tackling demolition and basic installation work themselves, but many projects require specialized knowledge and could lead to expensive mistakes like leaking fixtures or water damage. Hiring a professional to perform these tasks can increase the upfront project cost, but can prevent costly repairs in the future.
Small bathrooms offer a variety of finishing and design options, including heated floors and drawer chargers that add convenience. Inexpensive DIY upgrades like new bathroom mirrors and cabinet knobs also provide a fresh look without the high-end price tag.

How to Make the Most of En Suite Bathroom Renovations
Tumblr media
A remodelling of a bathroom can be a costly endeavour. But there are a number of ways you can make the most of your ensuite renovation without breaking the bank.
Wall mounted vanities are a space saver in compact spaces and can also elevate the room height for a more spacious look. Alternatively, inwall cisterns can be installed for a back to wall toilet suite with a modern appearance.
Storage
If you’re aiming for a clean, modern look, it’s important to keep your bathroom clutter-free. That’s where storage solutions like hotel shelves, a wall-mounted vanity cabinet or shower niche come in handy.
These storage options are great for storing items such as toiletries, bath and body products, towels, hairdryers and laundry baskets. Plus, they add a decorative touch and make the space appear bigger by utilising wall space without taking up floorspace.
Alternatively, a linen closet can also offer ample storage space for items such as tissue paper, bath towels and even extra toilet rolls. Open shelving is another option that can be used to store beautifully textured towels or designer beauty products. It’s also easy to build a recessed nook in the wall of your shower or tub area for additional shelving. A niche can also be incorporated into the wall of your shower to avoid protruding shelves, and this feature looks great when tiled in a dark contrast colour.
Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important features of any bathroom. Having a good mix of ambient, task and accent lighting will give the space the right atmosphere.
Upgrading light fixtures is an inexpensive way to brighten up the space, with a typical cost ranging between $100 and $400. However, if existing wiring needs to be replaced this will increase your overall renovation costs.
Consider using LED lights as they are long-lasting and energy efficient, saving you money in the long run. Also opt for dimmable lights, these are a great feature for mood lighting and adds a luxurious feel to the room.
Accent lighting can be used to highlight an art deco wall or focal point in your ensuite bathroom renovation. This will add a touch of flair to your bathroom, while also providing a warm, welcoming ambience.
Colour
Choosing the colour scheme for your ensuite is one of the main decisions during a renovation because it will dictate materials like tiling and tapware. Often homeowners choose to use the same colours as their main bedroom to provide continuity and a sense of unity between the two rooms.
However, it’s important to remember that your bathroom is its own space and should be able to reflect your personality. For example, if you love midnight blue or swoon over sunflower yellow, let that passion guide you in your remodel choices.
One safe and easy way to add color to your ensuite is to use wall art. Just remember to select pieces that can withstand the moisture of a bathroom. Alternatively, you could try adding some plants to the room. This will reduce the amount of humidity in your home, and it will also help to keep the air in your bathroom fresh. This will help to keep your ensuite looking and feeling good for years to come.
Toilets
En suite bathrooms are becoming increasingly popular in new builds and renovations. This bathroom is attached to the bedroom and contains a toilet, shower and basin. They are a great feature in homes, and also make it easier to access your toilet when you’re in bed or travelling in the house!
During your ensuite bathroom renovations you can also choose to install a new toilet. They come in a range of styles and sizes and can be customised to suit the space. For example, in-wall cisterns can save space and can be designed to work with storage solutions like recessed shelving.
While a new toilet can look great and add value to your home, not everyone is comfortable with the idea of a bathroom right next to their bedroom. This can be a problem for couples with different sleep schedules, as early risers might disturb their partner during their morning routine. This could be avoided with the use of a separate toilet room or Jack and Jill doors.
