Game Day USA

So it's a big gameday for soccer fans. I'm feeling a little extra excitement as I've watched the country focus their collective attention on this team, and more specifically on Abby Wambach. Back in the days of the WUSA pro soccer league, I once bowled with Abby at an fundraiser for the Washington Freedom just before the 2002 season started. It was her first season out of college and only the most die-hard of soccer fans knew her. Three of my friends and Abby bowled here in Washington, DC. Big shocker - she beat us all.

We all adopted her as our favorite player. We made big signs spelling out A-B-B-Y and brought them to all of the Washington Freedom games. She always acknowledged the effort of her little group of early fans. And pretty soon soccer fans started to pay attention to her as she "bowled" over her opponents on the field, under the wing of the great Mia Hamm. 

Soon the USWNT invited her to camp and before we knew it, she was a staple on the US team, headed for the 2003 World Cup. And I guess the rest is better known history. Win or lose today, my friends and I will be watching with pride for bowling partner from back in the day. Not sure she remember us, but I like to think she does. Thanks, Abby for taking us on such a fantastic ride.
