Spent the afternoon looking around Auckland (the maritime quarter is a great spot) then were invited by some friends who live just outside the city for dinner. A great way to end our tour of NZ. Next stop: Seoul!!

17th Jan: Well today we basically did a beach crawl. Matapouri beach first then Whale Bay, before heading back to Tutukaka for some kayaking and Licketty Split ice cream. Yum.

16th Jan: Zipping around Northland - to the Hokianga River, then onto Waipoua Forest with NZ's most ENORMOUS and oldest Kauri trees - up to 16m in circumference. Seriously, they are massive. Spending our last couple of nights before Auckland in a gorgeous little bach on the edge of Tutukaka (Tim kayaked into the marina on a beer run). Sky gently turning orange and red on a peaceful evening.

15th Jan: Spent the day on a catamaran sailing/motoring round the Bay of Islands. Stopped at Motuarohia (Roberton) Island where Cook first stopped in the area and upon climbing this island (which we also felt obliged to do) gave the Bay of Islands its name. Various other stops snorkelling fish, trying fresh sea urchin and generally being happy with the unexpected improvement in the weather! Gold star to Cate for retrieving Tim's swim shorts from the boat AND keeping them dry - zoom in relevant photo for proof :)

13th Jan: We stayed overnight in Mangawhai Heads before going for brunch in the village and having a quick dip at the beach. Then on to a local campsite where we met up with an old colleague of Cate's and his family, before heading up via the Hundertswasser toilets in Kawakawa to Russell (via a very Boddinick-esque car ferry) in the Northland. We have a small self catering apartment overlooking Russell - an idyllic spot with fabulous sunsets.

12th Jan: Geysers, mud pools and redwoods today. All very cool. The trees grow up to about 70m tall here (that's for Daniel). Off up to Mangawhai tonight and Bay of Islands tomorrow for a few days :)

10th Jan: We spent the morning travelling from New Plymouth to Waitomo where we saw the very cool glowworm caves, then on to Lake Taupo. Now watching the slow sunset with our drinks. It’s about 25deg. We really do wish you were here!

6th Jan: After jumping out of a plane a little after sunrise this morning (16,500ft, about 70 secs freefall...!!!), we meandered our way to the Marlborough Sounds via Pelorus Bridge (emerald green river/pools). This afternoon was spent kayaking up a small section of Queen Charlotte Sound - a very tranquil, relaxed feel with some spectacular vistas. We like it here.
