I want to elaborate on why I think the ghost of Old Hamlet was not in fact Old Hamlet actually
1) I'm Protestant, to be fair
2) Nothing he did helped Hamlet's situation at all. Hamlet presents his father as a faultless saint who was a perfect king. And yet when Hamlet is clearly faltering and tormenting himself, he is a consistent voice for revenge, decisiveness, and an unceasing you should kill that guy. It makes sense coming from the voice of a demon there to sew something rotten in the state of Denmark. Would his loving father drive Hamlet to his suicidal bloodbath.

Flammifer. 2016, Digital.
“But on him mighty doom was laid, till Moon should fade, an orbéd star to pass, and tarry never more on Hither Shores where Mortals are; for ever still a herald on an errand that should never rest to bear his shining lamp afar, the Flammifer of Westernesse.“
Amongst all the characters in the Middle-Earth canon, Eärendil has always been my favorite.

Incomplete list of stuff that made me go apeshit reading Fellowship for the first time, medievalist edition (part II)
Part I here. Disclaimer: this is for fun!
Love that people keep stressing that they are going to the ELVES for COUNCIL. Old English names, especially among the rulers of Wessex, Northumbria, Mercia, etc, were often Elf Theme Names, one of the most famous and enduring of which is Alfred. Written the old way, Ælfræd or Ælfred (as in Alfred the Great), means Elf-Council, aka "counseled by elves". In their hearts... everyone wants to be Alfred... possibly this is only funny 2 me.
Tom Bombadil doing a training montage in the fucking magic system of Middle Earth?? He teaches Frodo to recite a poem that will summon him, Tom Bombadil, in times of need! Frodo gets kidnapped by undead wights in a barrow (like many a good young person in an Old Norse saga before him) and dutifully recites this magic poem. Frodo learned Recite Magic Poem! TOM BOMBADIL SMASHES THRU THE WALL OF THE BARROW LIKE THE KOOL-ADE MAN AND RECITES A BIGGER, STRONGER POEM??
At this point I gave up on trying to be normal about anything. As such, I'm pausing on Tom Bombadil again.
It helped (?? not psychologically) that Tom Bombadil recited something that felt a bit familiar, when he banished the wights. It's not anything like a direct translation, if indeed it bears any purposeful resemblance to the actual recorded medieval galdor called Against a Wen. Regardless, Against a Wen is an okay?? example of what a spoken word magic poem would look like, and why it's similar to what Tom Bombadil (and later Gandalf and others) do. Left screenshot is Bombadil against a barrow-wight. Right is Against a Wen, in English translation. (a wen was possibly a skin ailment, like a mole or a cancer). Banishing to/beyond the hills and shrivelling are the apparent themes. You don't have to follow me on this one, much less agree. Frankly this is the point I went off the deep end, probably.

Galdor can also protect! This just happens to be a banishment.
Gollum got exiled (the worst thing the early medieval and apparently proto-hobbit law could do to you) but not even for murder. No one found out about the murder. He just sucked.
ALSO Gollum lied and said that his matriarch (who exiled him) gave him the Ring. This implies it was plausible she'd give out rings, implying female ring-giver (standard role of a king). This is mentioned once and never again. ok!!
One last fun fact about galdor: it is the word at the end of "nightingale" isn't that lovely? Luthien's name in-universe means nightingale. This is fine!
I spent a lot of time researching Aragorn's favorite rock. I love these books. If I recall correctly it's a real rock! but possibly. just a cool rock.

Another little thing in FOTR that Gets me every time–
In Lothlorien, Boromir asks Aragorn if he’s ever “been called home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets,” and promises to return to the White City with him one day….. as if he believes Minas Tirith is Aragorn’s home too. But Aragorn is clearly hesitant.
Later, Boromir tries to convince Aragorn to take the Fellowship to Minas Tirith. He asks: “why do you have so little faith in your own people?”
Aragorn snaps and responds “I would not lead the ring within a hundred leagues of your city.”
Aragorn is flat-out saying: “they’re not my people— they’re yours. Minas Tirith is not my home– it’s yours.”
And Aragorn’s refusal to help Gondor is what drives Boromir to desperation. Aragorn was his last hope, and when he refuses to help….Boromir feels like taking the Ring is his only choice.
As Boromir is dying, he tells Aragorn: “All will come to darkness…and my city to ruin!”
Boromir no longer refers to Minas Tirith as “your city” or “our city.” Because he’s finally lost all hope that Aragorn will ever see Minas Tirith as his home. He’s stopped trying to convince him.
But then Aragorn responds:
“I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you I will not let the White City fall– nor our people fail.”
And just….. the shock, then the utter relief in Boromir’s voice as he quietly repeats “our people...our people…..”

To anyone who believes fairy tale romances never happen in real life, may I remind you that JRR and Edith Tolkien met and experienced a forbidden love in their youth, and then were separated for five whole years because of his guardian’s rules that he could not date till he was 21, and she got engaged to someone else only because she assumed he’d forgotten her and lost hope that she could ever be with him, but then on his 21st birthday, he wrote her a letter saying he still loved her and wanted to marry her, she responded basically saying ‘if I’d known you hadn’t left me on the shelf, I would never have said yes to anyone else,’ then a week later she greeted him at the train station and then immediately dumped her fiancé, and they got married and she converted to his religion and danced for him in a flowering field far away from the trenches into which he was drafted, which left such an impression that he crafted an entire story about the most beautiful maiden in the world who danced in the woods and made enormous sacrifices to be with the man she loved, and they had four kids and remained faithful to each other and blissfully grew old together and their gravestones are now marked with the names of that same fictional couple that he created, who broke every rule and overcame every possible obstacle to be together and get a happy ending, who only did all that because he based it all on their own real love story.
