I wrote this in a discord server and I liked it so much that I copied and edited it here. Enjoy!

So i use Tumblr (duh) and TikTok, worst of both worlds i know. But one thing i like seeing is how differently people act in different social media spaces, you aren’t gonna speak the EXACT same way on discord then you would on twitter. And the thing that made me notice this is a comic by @bearsockz called “destiny”

The comic is about a raccoon who was born with a red, green, and yellow highlight and is “destined for greatness” but at the end it’s shown that she works at a 7/11. It’s a funny bait and switch comic and a way to show op’s new oc, and that’s how tumblr took it

But TikTok took it differently. The reaction to it was split, some calling the comic propaganda while others taking it as a more lighthearted way to show off an oc.

Now my original hypothesis was that since TikTok naturally promotes more negativity, that’s why the comments were trying to start arguments.

But then I went back to tumblr and read the comments (not the reposts) there, and they were very similar to the clock comments (just filled with more bots), incredibly split with people starting arguments.

So I had to go back to the drawing board before realizing that the reason why the reactions are different isn’t because of the site, but because of the different ways this was posted on.

Reposts aren’t usually made to start arguing on tumblr, they’re here to say something you think should be said which fits since tumblr is a blogging app first and foremost. But comments are more meant to get engagement instead of actually commenting. This is why tumblr has so many bot comments or why TikTok has so many random comments that don’t make sense with the video.

The different ways that people interact with posts changes the way they talk about said post. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
