asldfkjsldf I am sO SORRY for taking so long to get to this. Fictober then nano happened and then... uhhh I don’t have an excuse for the last couple weeks, so we’re just gonna say Life(tm). Yeah. 😅

ANYWHO I love Scott a lot, and will never pass up any opportunity to talk about him. Plus, I have even more experience writing him now! So ya know

1). Much like Deaton (who I wrote about here), Scott is very much an internal processor. With a few exceptions (generally in earlier seasons, and usually as a result of anger/frustration), it’s rare for Scott to externalize either his emotions or his thought processes. Which doesn’t mean he doesn’t have either of those things! It just means that he has a very rich inner life, and as a result it is very fun to write things from his POV. The flip side of this is, since he doesn’t really externalize his decision making, once he’s made up his mind about a course of action it can be almost impossible to convince him otherwise. This is also what makes him such a determinator—if he’s decided to do something, he’s not going to give up easy.

2). Part of that extreme internalization of, well, everything, means that it’s very easy for him to feel incredibly guilty over anything that goes wrong—he couldn’t stop it from happening, therefore it’s his fault. We see this especially in 5A, where his main response to the pack drifting apart is to seem to basically tell himself ‘everyone’s separating themselves from me and they’re probably right to do that because it’s my fault, and that makes me sad but okay :(’ And it’s not just big events that he does this—especially if he’s already not in a great place emotionally, Scott will, for lack of a better word, emotionally self-yeet at any given opportunity.

3). Scott also cares a lot, about pretty much everyone, just as a core part of his personality. Like, just the sheer amount of empathy he has!! The show establishes late in the series that you have to care about someone in order to take their pain (and in a way, what is pain taking but empathy externalized) and this is something that Scott does easily, including with complete strangers! AND this is so core to who he is, that sometimes he does it automatically, without even really meaning to! Basically he cares very, very deeply, just as a matter of course and because of who his is as a person.

4). Jumping off of this, Scott’s relationship with other people and his desire to care for/take care of others is also incredibly important, and this manifests in both positive and negative ways. On the negative side of things, worrying about others can be an unhealthy coping mechanism for him—if he focuses solely on other people’s needs/issues, then it allows him to ignore his own trauma. He pushes his own issues to the side and pretends they don’t exist, which then has the potential to come back and bite him, because guess what, if you ignore your own issues and pretend they don’t exist, that baggage will always bleed into your interactions with others as well, and then no one’s in for a good time. HOWEVER, when Scott’s in a healthier place, this drive to care for and help others means that he is incredibly fulfilled by and happy in a role where he is able to do that. For example, see the beginning of 5A, where he’s so confident and happy in his role as an Alpha, or the beginning of 6A where he seems to really enjoy coaching the lacrosse team. This is also part of why I think Scott’s a True Alpha—it’s simply in his nature to care for and lead others. It’s very literally already who he is and was.

5). Finally, externals and body language. While I’ve written early seasons Scott a couple times, I generally tend to prefer writing Alpha!Scott, and Scott in the later seasons is often very controlled/purposeful in his movements. Which makes sense, since ever he was bitten one of his biggest fears has been being out of control of himself. He’s also a big fan of eye contact, both with people that he’s trying to comfort or persuade, and with people that he sees as a threat—in a tense situation, Scott will usually keep his eyes on whoever he sees as the biggest threat in the threat, often fully squaring off/facing them, as well.

But my absolute favorite body language thing that Scott does is what I would consider kinda his signature move—that when he’s comforting or reassuring someone, he’ll often crouch down, getting at the other person’s level so he can catch their eyes better. Getting in their space, but just a little, not enough to crowd. And he does this a lot. With Liam primarily (and many time over the course of the show), but also with Stiles in 3B, and many of the others as well. And it’s very much something that he does in his role as the Alpha, which!! The power of that!! He’s an Alpha, and the way he shows that is by getting down at someone else’s level. He cares for and about others so much, and this is evident by the way he leads.

Words for Skin Tone | How to Describe Skin Color

We discussed the issues describing People of Color by means of food in Part I of this guide, which brought rise to even more questions, mostly along the lines of “So, if food’s not an option, what can I use?” Well, I was just getting to that!

This final portion focuses on describing skin tone, with photo and passage examples provided throughout. I hope to cover everything from the use of straight-forward description to the more creatively-inclined, keeping in mind the questions we’ve received on this topic.

Standard Description

Basic Colors

Pictured above: Black, Brown, Beige, White, Pink.

“She had brown skin.”

This is a perfectly fine description that, while not providing the most detail, works well and will never become cliché.

Describing characters’ skin as simply brown or beige works on its own, though it’s not particularly telling just from the range in brown alone.

Complex Colors

These are more rarely used words that actually “mean” their color. Some of these have multiple meanings, so you’ll want to look into those to determine what other associations a word might have.

Pictured above: Umber, Sepia, Ochre, Russet, Terra-cotta, Gold, Tawny, Taupe, Khaki, Fawn.

Complex colors work well alone, though often pair well with a basic color in regards to narrowing down shade/tone.

For example: Golden brown, russet brown, tawny beige…

As some of these are on the “rare” side, sliding in a definition of the word within the sentence itself may help readers who are unfamiliar with the term visualize the color without seeking a dictionary.

“He was tall and slim, his skin a russet, reddish-brown.”

Comparisons to familiar colors or visuals are also helpful:

“His skin was an ochre color, much like the mellow-brown light that bathed the forest.”

Modifiers

Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word.The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone.

Dark - Deep - Rich - Cool

Warm - Medium - Tan

Fair - Light - Pale

Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pink…

If you’re looking to get more specific than “brown,” modifiers narrow down shade further.

Keep in mind that these modifiers are not exactly colors.

As an already brown-skinned person, I get tan from a lot of sun and resultingly become a darker, deeper brown. I turn a pale, more yellow-brown in the winter.

While best used in combination with a color, I suppose words like “tan” “fair” and “light” do work alone; just note that tan is less likely to be taken for “naturally tan” and much more likely a tanned White person.

Calling someone “dark” as description on its own is offensive to some and also ambiguous. (See: Describing Skin as Dark)

Undertones

Undertones are the colors beneath the skin, seeing as skin isn’t just one even color but has more subdued tones within the dominating palette.

pictured above: warm / earth undertones: yellow, golden, copper, olive, bronze, orange, orange-red, coral | cool / jewel undertones: pink, red, blue, blue-red, rose, magenta, sapphire, silver. 

Mentioning the undertones within a character’s skin is an even more precise way to denote skin tone.

As shown, there’s a difference between say, brown skin with warm orange-red undertones (Kelly Rowland) and brown skin with cool, jewel undertones (Rutina Wesley).

“A dazzling smile revealed the bronze glow at her cheeks.”

“He always looked as if he’d ran a mile, a constant tinge of pink under his tawny skin.”

Standard Description Passage

“Farah’s skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summer’s sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.”

Here the state of skin also gives insight on character.

Note my use of “fawn” in regards to multiple meaning and association. While fawn is a color, it’s also a small, timid deer, which describes this very traumatized character of mine perfectly.

Though I use standard descriptions of skin tone more in my writing, at the same time I’m no stranger to creative descriptions, and do enjoy the occasional artsy detail of a character.

Creative Description

Whether compared to night-cast rivers or day’s first light…I actually enjoy seeing Characters of Colors dressed in artful detail.

I’ve read loads of descriptions in my day of white characters and their “smooth rose-tinged ivory skin”, while the PoC, if there, are reduced to something from a candy bowl or a Starbucks drink, so to actually read of PoC described in lavish detail can be somewhat of a treat.

Still, be mindful when you get creative with your character descriptions. Too many frills can become purple-prose-like, so do what feels right for your writing when and where. Not every character or scene warrants a creative description, either. Especially if they’re not even a secondary character.

Using a combination of color descriptions from standard to creative is probably a better method than straight creative. But again, do what’s good for your tale.

Natural Settings - Sky

Pictured above: Harvest Moon -Twilight, Fall/Autumn Leaves, Clay, Desert/Sahara, Sunlight - Sunrise - Sunset - Afterglow - Dawn- Day- Daybreak, Field - Prairie - Wheat, Mountain/Cliff, Beach/Sand/Straw/Hay.

Now before you run off to compare your heroine’s skin to the harvest moon or a cliff side, think about the associations to your words.

When I think cliff, I think of jagged, perilous, rough. I hear sand and picture grainy, yet smooth. Calm. mellow.

So consider your character and what you see fit to compare them to.

Also consider whose perspective you’re describing them from. Someone describing a person they revere or admire may have a more pleasant, loftier description than someone who can’t stand the person.

“Her face was like the fire-gold glow of dawn, lifting my gaze, drawing me in.”

“She had a sandy complexion, smooth and tawny.”

Even creative descriptions tend to draw help from your standard words.

Flowers

Pictured above: Calla lilies, Western Coneflower, Hazel Fay, Hibiscus, Freesia, Rose

It was a bit difficult to find flowers to my liking that didn’t have a 20 character name or wasn’t called something like “chocolate silk” so these are the finalists. 

You’ll definitely want to avoid purple-prose here.

Also be aware of flowers that most might’ve never heard of. Roses are easy, as most know the look and coloring(s) of this plant. But Western coneflowers? Calla lilies? Maybe not so much.

“He entered the cottage in a huff, cheeks a blushing brown like the flowers Nana planted right under my window. Hazel Fay she called them, was it?”

Assorted Plants & Nature

Pictured above: Cattails, Seashell, Driftwood, Pinecone, Acorn, Amber

These ones are kinda odd. Perhaps because I’ve never seen these in comparison to skin tone, With the exception of amber.

At least they’re common enough that most may have an idea what you’re talking about at the mention of “pinecone." 

I suggest reading out your sentences aloud to get a better feel of how it’ll sounds.

"Auburn hair swept past pointed ears, set around a face like an acorn both in shape and shade.”

I pictured some tree-dwelling being or person from a fantasy world in this example, which makes the comparison more appropriate.

I don’t suggest using a comparison just “cuz you can” but actually being thoughtful about what you’re comparing your character to and how it applies to your character and/or setting.

Wood

Pictured above: Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut, Golden Oak, Ash

Wood can be an iffy description for skin tone. Not only due to several of them having “foody” terminology within their names, but again, associations.

Some people would prefer not to compare/be compared to wood at all, so get opinions, try it aloud, and make sure it’s appropriate to the character if you do use it.

“The old warlock’s skin was a deep shade of mahogany, his stare serious and firm as it held mine.”

Metals

Pictured above: Platinum, Copper, Brass, Gold, Bronze

Copper skin, brass-colored skin, golden skin…

I’ve even heard variations of these used before by comparison to an object of the same properties/coloring, such as penny for copper.

These also work well with modifiers.

“The dress of fine white silks popped against the deep bronze of her skin.”

Gemstones - Minerals

Pictured above: Onyx, Obsidian, Sard, Topaz, Carnelian, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Pyrite, Citrine, Gypsum

These are trickier to use. As with some complex colors, the writer will have to get us to understand what most of these look like.

If you use these, or any more rare description, consider if it actually “fits” the book or scene.

Even if you’re able to get us to picture what “rutile” looks like, why are you using this description as opposed to something else? Have that answer for yourself.

“His skin reminded her of the topaz ring her father wore at his finger, a gleaming stone of brown, mellow facades.” 

Physical Description

Physical character description can be more than skin tone.

Show us hair, eyes, noses, mouth, hands…body posture, body shape, skin texture… though not necessarily all of those nor at once.

Describing features also helps indicate race, especially if your character has some traits common within the race they are, such as afro hair to a Black character.

How comprehensive you decide to get is up to you. I wouldn’t overdo it and get specific to every mole and birthmark. Noting defining characteristics is good, though, like slightly spaced front teeth, curls that stay flopping in their face, hands freckled with sunspots…

General Tips

Indicate Race Early: I suggest indicators of race be made at the earliest convenience within the writing, with more hints threaded throughout here and there.

Get Creative On Your Own: Obviously, I couldn’t cover every proper color or comparison in which has been “approved” to use for your characters’ skin color, so it’s up to you to use discretion when seeking other ways and shades to describe skin tone.

Skin Color May Not Be Enough: Describing skin tone isn’t always enough to indicate someone’s ethnicity. As timeless cases with readers equating brown to “dark white” or something, more indicators of race may be needed.

Describe White characters and PoC Alike: You should describe the race and/or skin tone of your white characters just as you do your Characters of Color. If you don’t, you risk implying that White is the default human being and PoC are the “Other”).

PSA: Don’t use “Colored.” Based on some asks we’ve received using this word, I’d like to say that unless you or your character is a racist grandmama from the 1960s, do not call People of Color “colored” please. 

Not Sure Where to Start? You really can’t go wrong using basic colors for your skin descriptions. It’s actually what many people prefer and works best for most writing. Personally, I tend to describe my characters using a combo of basic colors + modifiers, with mentions of undertones at times. I do like to veer into more creative descriptions on occasion.

can't believe my mind (the boy is divine)

Here's a sneak peek of one of my upcoming wips. Which should be coming to ao3 .... soonish.

Elain follows after her, hoping her older sister doesn't ruin her date before she's even gone on the date. Feyre has just opened the door for a man. Calling him hot doesn't exactly do his devastating hotness justice. He has short black hair, hazel eyes, and golden skin. Even through his suit jacket, she can very clearly see his muscles. He’s tall. Taller than all three of them. Then her eyes land on his scarred hands. Which, for reasons she can't quite explain, only adds to his hotness.

“It's nice to meet you both. You must be Nesta.” Azriel says as he steps into the house.

“Yes. And you must be Azriel… I'm sorry, what was your last name again?” Nesta says, looking up at the male like she's sizing him up.

“Villanueva.”

“Right. And what is it you do again?”

“Nesta.” Feyre hisses, looking like she's moments away from pushing Azriel and Elain out the door with her bare hands.

“I'm a manager at my friend’s restaurant. Well, one of his restaurants, at least.” But Azriel doesn't falter under the line of questioning coming from Nesta. And most people would run away in absolute terror if Nesta Archeron was looking at them the way she is right now. She's smiling, but her eyes give away what's going on in the dancer’s head. If he gives her one answer she doesn't like, then the date’s over before it's even begun.

“And how do you know Feyre?” “After the mural on the wall in the restaurant was damaged by a drunk patron, Feyre was hired to do a new one. And we became friends.”

“Exactly like I told you. Now let them go, I'm sure he made reservations.” Feyre turns to look at Azriel, who catches on quickly.

“Yes. We should really get going.”

“Hold on.” Nesta says but Elain is already heading out the door. Azriel puts a hand on her back as Feyre closes the door. He leads her over to his car, a black Bentley parked in between Elain’s Prius and Nesta’s Hearse.

Azriel opens her door for her, and she climbs into the passenger seat. He walks around to the driver's side, getting into the car. “So where are you taking me? I assume you don't actually have reservations.”

It's Time! Welcome to TodoIzuOcha Week 2024!

After some planning behind the scenes (and Mod Cal dealing with carpal tunnel), we've finally set everything up for this year's TodoIzuOcha Week! It will take place from May 13th to May 19th to ensure that everyone has enough time to create and celebrate!

Our rule post will be coming out in the next few days. But as a refresher, make sure to properly tag for any blood or gore, try to keep things sfw, and tag your manga spoilers if there are any! Remember to use the tag #todoizuochaweek2024 in the first few tags of your post and tag us at @todoizuocha-week so that we don't miss your creations! Please try to include in the description what prompt(s) you're using!

Onto the prompts! Like last year, there are two AU options and two concept/idea options! Feel free to use as many or as few prompts as you want; they're not required! They're simply guides to help you get started!

No because I actually want to see a villain who’s both comedic and has absolutely no idea what the hell they’re doing

Like

Imagine they’re new to the city where the hero operates and they get caught in the crossfire during a fight

BUT

The villain acts on impulse and sticks their hand out to shield themselves from an attack

AND GUESS WHAT HAPPENS NEXT Y’ALL

They don’t feel like..uh..dying

So they open their eyes

AND FIND OUT THEY FRICKING BLASTED A HOLE IN A BUILDING

And the hero’s just gaping at them like 0-0 wut

So this naturally sets off a nation wide manhunt for the villain

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL FOLKS

While on the run, the villain encounters someone who treats them like a goddamn celebrity

Like this person legit idolizes their actions

The person joins the villain and becomes their self-proclaimed ‘sidekick’

Bonus points if more ‘sidekicks’ join and it becomes the most out-of-context cult(?) ever

AND ALL THE WHILE THE HERO’S CHASING THEM DOWN LIKE A MADMAN

I rest my case.

Villains who are polite and elegant while commiting crimes. Their fighting looks like a dance form. They're well-versed in how to act for/ preform for/ entertain the rich (they are the rich, "villainy pays well"). Genius (actual braindead idiot).

On the other hand, a hit-hard, ask-questions-after kind of hero. They're a disaster, and quite frankly help others because they don't know how (or don't want to) help themselves. Braindead idiot (accidental genius).

Now make it enemies to lovers.

Hero "hates" villain for their mannerism, but they're really just infatuated with them. Villain's taunts make them think about their actions.

Villain's attraction is "why are people in their midlife crisis so hot" and moronsexual™️. Hero makes their brain shortcircuit.

Hero: "Oh poor you, your perfect, greasy, pretty hair is singed."

Villain: Are they flirting or insulting me? God they're so bad at it no matter which on it is (It's both), that's so sexy

Hero, bruised and bloody, getting up with shaky legs, smiling. It's very attractive: "I've been hit harder"

Villain, nose bleeding: "Hello, sailor"

Villain, dusting off their now riped-in-shambles suit, and straightening the cuffs, "I just got this suit after you destroyed the last one. I would ask you to purchase me a new set of attire, but I doubt you can afford it."

Hero, their brain thinking 'No, I deffinately cannot' to 'I'd like to see them without the suit entirely' to 'Wait, what?' and 'God, I hate them, their lovely voice, their hair that smells like how honey tastes, the way they smile when they reveal their plans' and would really like to see villain without the suit entirely (even through villain looks great in all of their suits): "Just stop wearing suits and wear something that can handle me."

Villain, wondering if Hero is doing this on purpose (they aren't) and what their relationship even is: "Hot"

Hero: "What"

Villain: "What"

Hero: "Did you just call me ho-"

Villain, paniking: "You're on fire"

Hero: "???? No, I'm no-????"

Villain, pulling out a flamethrower and shooting Hero (dw they're flame-proof): hO t.

Prompt #73

The villain brought the hero into their arms carefully - gentle. More like a lover than the person who'd just destroyed them in a fight but the hero wouldn't have had it any other way. They settled into their defeat comfortably, more than used to it by now.

"So," the villain began, smile teasing as they carried them. "Your place or mine?"

The hero chuckled, tucking their face against their enemy's shoulder. "You say that as if you know where I live," they mused.

A beat.

The villain didn't say a word and the hero frowned because of it.

"Villain?" Nothing. "Villain, you don't actually know where I live, right?"

Silence. Long, guilty silence.

The hero turned their gaze upwards, instantly noticing the blush that coated the other's cheeks: despite their talent for mischief, they had always been a terrible liar...

"Villain," they asked, "why do you know where I live?"
