Thoughts on Bad Apple Wars so far.

In one of my earlier posts I mentioned how I started Hakuouki: Kyoto Winds, and how it was my first time playing anything from the series. I don’t think I approached it right (saw cute routes, somehow wanted to see if I could get them early) and got super overwhelmed. I was enjoying a lot of the game (presentation, setting, polish, ect) but felt so lost that I had to put it down. I’m going to go back to it down the line (soon) and will approach it organically. The way I “should” (answering honestly and seeing what sticks instead of seeing if I can gun for one route or another).

So in the meantime, I’ve booted up Bad Apple Wars and, hey, I really like it.

I wasn’t sure how much I’d be into what can best be described as a slightly experimental otome system. Instead of answering questions that branch out, you’re given touch screen CG’s. Your knowledge of the character and where you choose to touch ultimately decides the direction your game goes in. In an odd way, this actually somehow feels more tense than the traditional question/answer mechanic.

It’s a mechanic that I feel (and maybe it’s already used here, I don’t know) would be well suited towards a smuttier game, but somehow works really well in a T-Rated romance setting.

Fittingly enough, the rest of the game and setting feels just as unique as the mechanic does.

I won’t dive into too many spoilers, but the story revolves around lost/dead souls in an afterlife, purgatorial high school. It’s a mouthful, and has the potential to be incredibly pretentious, but so far it’s not. Without getting too heavy-handed or out of its depth, it does probe deeper questions concerning futility, memory, experience and love.

Rinka, the MC, is incredibly depressing and self-loathing. This is something that I do think people should know going into the game. And while this may be a turn off to some, I find that her depression/self-doubt is not something that I dislike. In fact, I find it to be very relatable. On a personal level, my tolerance for self-loathing characters is pretty low. It’s often not handled well and that rubs me the wrong way, but here, with Rinka, it feels right. It feels natural, and, again, relatable. I do think it’s important to point out though.

I should also mention that while I don’t find any of the suitors as immediately attractive as I have in games like Collar, Code or Hakuouki, they, so far, have great motivations and feel pretty well fleshed out. I’ve reached up to chapter 4 of Shikishima’s Route and am excited to keep going. Note, this isn’t to say that I think anybody is ugly. The style and character design feels completely unique. It’s sharp, exaggerated and angular. But not ugly. It also matches the equally sharp colors of the settings and backgrounds.

The supporting cast has to be one of the all-around best parts. I love everyone, especially Naraka and Sanzu.

That’s it for now. I am thoroughly enjoying Bad Apple Wars and hope that other people give it a shot.

The special edition (which I believe is still availible, at gamestop (which is unfortunate, because, well, it’s gamestop)) is nice. It’s not huge but it does have a beautiful outerbox and a nice little art book. It also didn’t cost anything extra so there’s no harm (well, with the exception of actually giving money to gamestop).
