Read Chapter 1 Below:
“Take Jungkook out the back,” his father said, lifting a four-year-old Jungkook and placing him into his mother’s arms.
“You can’t fight them alone,” she whispered, and Jungkook could see tears in her eyes.
“I know,” his father told her, smiling sadly as he turned to face the door.
“Daddy,” Jungkook cried from his mother’s arms, not understanding why his parents were acting so afraid.
“Honey, please--”
“Go! One of us has to make it out of here--for Jungkook’s sake.”
With tears still in her eyes, his mother began running.
“I’m scared,” he cried, hearing screams all around him.
“It’s alright, baby. Everything will be alright,” his mother told him, tucking his head into her neck to shield his eyes as the screams around them grew louder.
She suddenly came to a stop, and he felt her heart beating wildly in her chest. “Stay away from us. He’s just a child, please--” She cut off with a gasp, and suddenly they were falling.
“M-Mommy?” He asked from underneath her. “Mommy, you’re heavy.”
“Baby, run,” she whispered, raising her head just enough to look at him. Her face was covered in red, and it was dripping onto Jungkook.
“Come with me,” he whimpered.
Tears fell from her eyes as the red liquid spilled from her lips. “I love you, Jungkook.”
“Mommy, come with me,” he pleaded again, not releasing his hold on her. He didn’t understand what was happening. This was their home, so he couldn’t leave. Where would he go without her?
Suddenly, she was lifted off him, and taken somewhere out of his line of sight. All he could see now were glowing red eyes, closing in on him.
“NO!” He sat up, thrashing against the arms around him.
“Jungkook, it’s me. It’s Yoongi-Hyung.”
He stilled as his Hyung’s face came into focus through his tears. “Y-Yoongi-Hyung,” he gasped, taking deep breaths.
“I’m here, it’s alright,” Yoongi told him, pulling him firmly against his chest. “It was just a dream.”
“I saw them again,” he cried, clutching Yoongi’s shirt tightly as his body shook. “There was so much blood, Hyung.”
“Shh, I’ve got you. You’re safe now, Kookie.”
“What if those bad vampires come for me?” He asked. Part of him hated how childish he felt every time he had one of his nightmares. He was eleven years old--he shouldn’t need his Hyung to hold him like a toddler when he woke up in tears and shaking, but it was the only thing that could calm him down. In the last few weeks, the dreams had become more frequent, and he woke up screaming more often than not.
“They won’t. I won’t let anything happen to you, I swear it.”
He sank into Yoongi’s chest, allowing his Hyung to rub soothing circles in his back as he calmed down and sleep slowly returned.
“I’ll keep you safe, no matter what.”
***FIVE YEARS LATER***
“Finally gracing us with your presence, I see. Welcome home.”
Jungkook froze, spinning to find the source of the voice. Yoongi was sitting on the sofa, legs crossed and laptop sitting on his knee. He was smirking at him from over the screen.
“Yoongi-Hyung. It’s after sunrise; I thought you’d be asleep.”
“I noticed you weren’t in your bed when I went to check on you earlier, and your cell phone was off, so I stayed up. I thought you had a big exam to study for?”
“Right! Um, yeah. That’s why I was out. I went to study with some friends.” God, who did he think he was fooling? He knew Yoongi would be able to tell he was lying. He always knew when Jungkook was lying.
“Smells like you had a pretty fun time studying,” Yoongi said, eyes going back to his computer screen.
Jungkook felt the heat in his cheeks and knew his face was scarlet. He was hoping the reason for his sneaking out would be at least somewhat a secret--he’d even taken a shower before coming home.
“I--”
“Listen, Jungkook,” Yoongi sighed, closing the computer and getting to his feet. “I don’t really care where you went or what you were doing--or with whom you were doing it.” Standing in front of Jungkook, the man was only a couple inches taller than himself now, but that didn’t make him any less terrifying. Jungkook knew the power hidden in the small vampire’s body.
“You don’t?” He asked.
“Of course not,” Yoongi frowned. “What I care about is that you went without telling me. If you want to go out to...indulge...with other humans your age, then I won’t stop you. You don’t even need to tell me where you’re going, just tell me before you leave so I know you’re gone. You know I worry.” Yoongi gave him a small smile, placing his hand on the top of Jungkook’s head.
“I know.” He couldn’t meet the vampire’s gaze, the flush refusing to leave his face. Now it was for entirely different reasons.
“Now, go wash up and get to bed.” With a final soft pat to his head, Yoongi headed towards his own room.
“Hyung?” He turned, meeting the vampire’s curious gaze. “Have a good sleep. Love you.”
Yoongi rewarded him with the gummy smile Jungkook craved to see as often as he could. “You too, Kookie.”
He watched him disappear into his dark bedroom before letting out a sigh. If you only knew how much.
***SIX YEARS LATER***
“Damn it!” Jungkook entered the living room just in time to hear the loud curse and glass shattering from the kitchen.
He looked to Seokjin, Yoongi’s closest friend and business partner, who was sitting on the sofa looking way too calm for what was happening in the kitchen. “Was that Hyung? Should we go check on him?”
Seokjin sighed, running a hand down his face. “Give him a minute. It’s been a long night.”
He looked towards the kitchen again, alarmed. In the nearly two decades he’d lived with Yoongi, he’d only ever seen him raise his voice maybe twice. “Is everything alright?”
“It will be; we have to figure out some things.”
“What happened?”
“Son of a bitch!” Another shattered glass.
The older vampire sighed again. “Hunters found one of the witches’ covens in Gangnam.”
“What? That’s not far from us,” he said. “Namjoon-Hyung--”
“He was with Yoongi and I when it happened. He’s alright.”
He breathed in relief. “And everyone else?”
Seokjin shook his head, and Jungkook felt his chest tighten. There had been nearly fifty witches in Gangnam’s coven.
“Those bastards,” Yoongi growled, coming back to the living room. “When I find them I’m going to--Jungkook.” He halted, all traces of anger disappearing from his face, red eyes fading back to their deep brown that nearly matched his pupils. “How long have you been home?”
“Not long. I heard about the coven.”
Yoongi’s eyes darkened. “Yeah. Forty-one witches were killed.” With a small shake of his head, he met Jungkook’s eyes and offered him a smile. “But that’s not for you to worry about. How was class? Did you hear back from that convenience store about the part-time job you applied for last week?”
“What can I do to help with the coven?”
Yoongi exchanged a look with Seokjin before looking back at him. “You can focus on your classes. This is our problem, not yours.”
“Because I’m human? The witches were human, too, and the hunters still targeted them. I was raised by a vampire, I think that makes issues involving you all my problem.”
“This is why I wasn’t going to tell him,” he said, shooting a reproachful look in Seokjin’s direction.
“Says the one breaking things in the kitchen like a fledgling,” Seokjin snapped back.
Yoongi cursed under his breath, running a hand through his black hair. “Sorry. Right, no, I shouldn’t have lost my temper like that.” To Jungkook, he said, “there really isn’t anything you can do to help us right now. We aren’t even sure what the next steps are on our end, so try not to worry about it. If there’s anything you can do, I’ll tell you.”
He wouldn’t. He never involved Jungkook in Vampire affairs. Jungkook was nearly twenty-three, but Yoongi still treated him like a child.
“I’m guessing you’ll be busy the rest of the night?” Jungkook asked, already knowing the answer. Whenever there was a problem in the vampire world, Yoongi was scarcely home for several days.
“Yeah,” he sighed. “We need to meet with some of the other coven leaders around Seoul. Namjoon is already gathering them.”
“I can--”
“You’re not coming,” Yoongi interrupted. “I’m sure you have homework or something.”
“This is more important.”
Yoongi smiled, patting him on top of the head. “So is maintaining the somewhat normalcy of your human life. Meet up with some friends or something, and don’t worry too much about our mess.”
“Yeah,” he sighed, knowing it was pointless to argue. Yoongi had always insisted he have normal human experiences, though he didn’t understand why. He was perfectly fine giving up his human life to help Yoongi with vampire affairs.
“I’ll have Hoseok stop by later to check on you, ok?”
He nodded, watching Yoongi and Seokjin disappear out the door, leaving him alone.
~~~
“You know, Jungkook might actually be able to help us with this stuff,” Jin said as they drove to the location Namjoon had gathered the other covens. “He can freely go out during the day, and we know that’s when the hunters are the most open with their own movements, so--”
“We’re not getting him involved,” Yoongi frowned.
“Yoongi, he’s been involved since the day you decided to take him in. You can’t protect him from this forever.”
“I can try,” he muttered.
“He’s an adult by human standards; he’s old enough to decide what he wants.”
“We both know what he’d choose. He likes to be helpful, but I won’t put him in danger.”
“You coddle him too much,” Jin said. “He’s more capable than you think.”
“I know he’s capable,” Yoongi sighed, “but I won’t risk his safety, Hyung. If the hunters found out about him, we both know how bad it would be--for all of us.”
Jin nodded. “I understand your hesitance, but give it some thought, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Hyungs, there you are!” Namjoon barely gave them time to park before he was opening Jin’s door. His purple hair was a mess, and his tie was slightly askew.
“You look like a mess,” Jin chuckled, straightening his tie. “I’m guessing the covens are in an uproar?”
“Everyone is ready to burn Seoul to the ground to find the hunters,” Namjoon told them. “Gangnam’s coven was peaceful, so none of their witches should have been on the hunters’ list.”
“It sounds like they did it just to cause trouble,” Yoongi growled. “Bastards.”
“We should get inside,” Namjoon said. “Hoseok was mediating, but there are about thirty coven leaders in there who are close to summoning their entire coven and rioting.”
“Damn, this has turned into a real mess,” he sighed, following the warlock inside.
Read Chapter 3 Below:
“I’m not leaving.” Jungkook squared his shoulders and met Yoongi’s gaze. He’d gotten back from meeting with the others and had suggested sending Jungkook to Daegu to hide until things were settled with the hunters. Jungkook wasn’t surprised he’d try to send him away, but he wasn’t going anywhere and leaving Yoongi in danger.
“Jungkook, please be reasonable here,” Yoongi sighed, “these hunters are a lot more dangerous than the ones who have come after me in the past. This is an organized group--a group who knows about you because they were in our home. I don’t want to put you in any more danger than you’re already in.”
“No, you just don’t want them to somehow use me against you,” he snapped. “You think they’ll go after me to get to you.”
“Of course they will!” Yoongi snapped back. “Wouldn’t you go after your enemy’s obvious weakness?”
“And that’s all I am? Of course,” Jungkook laughed, humorlessly. He’d always known Yoongi thought of him as a child, but to know he considered him a weakness… “I’m not some defenseless kid, Hyung. I can take care of myself.”
“I know you can, Kookie, but these people aren’t going to fight fair. They’re going to go after you, and I’m afraid of what they’d do to you if they managed to get you.”
“Because I’m weak.”
“I didn’t say you’re weak.”
“No, you just don’t trust me to not get captured.”
“Kookie--”
“Don’t ‘Kookie’ me right now, Hyung,” he snapped. “I’m more than just some weak human. I want to protect you, too. I can’t go to Daegu and leave you. I won’t.”
“Why are you so damn stubborn?” Yoongi growled.
“Must have learned it from you,” he quipped, not backing down.
With a quiet curse, Yoongi ran a hand over his face. “Fine, you can stay. But you’re under house arrest until I find out how much they know.”
His excitement quickly faded. “House arrest? Seriously?”
“I can’t protect you in the daytime, and that’s when they’re most likely to target you. You can go out at night if you’re with me or one of the others, but I don’t want you out alone.”
“What about my classes?”
“I’ll call the school and arrange something.” Yoongi took a seat on the sofa with a long sigh. “I’m sorry, Jungkook. I know this isn’t ideal--I wanted you to live a normal human life and not have to deal with my messes. Now I’ve gotten you involved anyways.”
“I’ve been involved since you found me as a kid,” Jungkook chuckled, sitting next to Yoongi and placing his hand on the vampire’s thigh. “I want to be involved, Hyung. I want to help you, so stop trying to hide me away and let me.”
“How did you turn out to be such a kind kid with a terrible guardian like me?” Yoongi chuckled, patting him on the head.
Before Jungkook could respond, Yoongi pulled away and got to his feet. “I’m going to my room to unpack and make some calls. Try to get some sleep, alright? I can tell you haven’t slept well since the coven attack.”
He nodded, watching as Yoongi disappeared into his bedroom. With a sigh, he leaned back on the sofa. I can’t believe he tried sending me away. Actually, he could believe it. Yoongi had sent him to Daegu once before. He’d been about 14 at the time, and a hunter had come after Yoongi. Afraid something would happen to him, Yoongi had ordered Hoseok to take him to Daegu to stay in the house he had there. They’d been in Daegu a little over a month before Yoongi called to say it was safe to bring Jungkook home.
With this issue, it’s hard to tell how long I’d have to stay in Daegu. One month? Two? Maybe a year? To Yoongi, that time might not seem like much, but Jungkook got anxious being away from Yoongi during the short business trips he sometimes took that only lasted a week.
“Too bad he doesn’t miss me at all when we’re apart,” he grumbled to himself.
“What are you talking to yourself about?”
“Hobi-Hyung!” He gasped, nearly falling off the sofa when he looked over to find Hoseok sitting next to him, smiling. “When did you get here? Why are you here?”
“I have the key codes to all of my sire’s homes,” Hoseok chuckled. “And I came to check on the two of you. I’m guessing Yoongi brought up Daegu.”
“Yes,” he frowned.
“I’m also guessing you got your way and don’t have to go?” Hoseok smirked.
“I’m not going to Daegu when a group of hunters is after Yoongi-Hyung.”
“I know that,” Hoseok chuckled again. “Hyung knew that, too. He probably just figured he’d give it a shot and see if he could convince you.”
“By calling me a weakness,” he sighed.
Hoseok’s smile fell. “He did?”
“He told me the hunters would come after me because I’m his weakness. What?” He snapped when Hoseok laughed.
“Kookie, that’s not an insult. It was basically him saying you’re the most important thing to him, so of course they’d go after you. I’m a little jealous, actually. I’m his only fledgling and he’s not worried about me at all.”
“Oh.” He hadn’t thought of it that way. He’d just assumed Yoongi thought of him as someone that needed protection, not someone he wanted to protect.
“Do I see a blush, Kookie?” Hoseok teased, pinching his cheeks as he laughed.
“It’s not!” He protested, trying to push Hoseok away.
His hyung laughed, continuing to pinch his cheeks. “My Jungkookie’s embarrassed because his favorite hyung wants to protect him the most.”
“Hyung!” He snapped.
“Notice me, hyungie~~”
“Stop!” He laughed, swatting at the vampire’s hands.
“You two are too damn loud,” Yoongi said, opening the door of his room. “Hoseok, you’re supposed to greet your sire after breaking into their house, at least.”
“My gracious sire, thank you for having me,” Hoseok mocked, still halfway in Jungkook’s lap with his hands pinching Jungkook’s cheeks.
“And release my ward,” Yoongi snorted, trying not to smile.
“He’s just jealous because I’m the fun Hyung,” Hoseok whispered, letting go of Jungkook and gently patting his head before hopping to his feet.
“Did you come for a reason, or just to tease Jungkook?”
“I needed to speak with you, but I also came to tease Jungkook.”
Yoongi chuckled, shaking his head. “What did you want to talk about?”
Hoseok glanced at Jungkook before saying, “in private.”
Yoongi’s expression grew serious, and he nodded. “We can talk in my office.”
“Is it about the hunters?” Jungkook asked.
“Just boring vampire stuff,” Hoseok said, though Jungkook knew it wasn’t the truth.
“I see.”
“Sorry, Kookie. I’ll come find you before I leave, alright?”
He nodded, watching the two of them disappear into Yoongi’s office. For a second, he thought about eavesdropping, but he knew it would be pointless. He learned a long time ago that when the vampires were talking about something they didn’t want him to know about, they just spoke too quietly for his human ears to hear.
~~~
“What did you need to say that you couldn’t call me about?” Yoongi asked Hoseok as soon as he shut the door to his office.
“It’s about the hunters,” he said, sitting in one of the plush chairs next to Yoongi’s wall-length bookcase, “it’s them, isn’t it?”
Yoongi sighed, sitting in the other chair. “Like I said at the meeting earlier, I’m fairly certain it’s them. It’s too coincidental that Namjoon and I have been the targets. If it was some other group organizing the hunters, they probably would have gone after a more notable vampire to make their point.”
“And you’re still letting Jungkook stay here, knowing who we’re up against?”
Yoongi offered him a tired smile. “He’s adamant about staying, so I can’t force him. I’ll just do everything I can to keep him safe and away from the hunters.”
“What if you told him--”
“Out of the question.”
“Hyung--”
“Hoseok.”
His argument died on his tongue at Yoongi’s tone. “Alright. He’s your ward.”
“I want him to find his independence before I tell him,” Yoongi said, voice suddenly sad. “It will make his leaving me easier on him.”
“He might not leave you.”
“He will,” Yoongi told him, that sad smile Hoseok hated appearing on his lips again. “Wouldn’t you leave, if you found out the one who raised you had lied to you for your entire life?”
“You did it to protect him.”
“I’m sure he won’t see it that way.” Yoongi shook his head. “But, it’s for the best. If he can escape this life, he should. I want him to live a normal human life where he goes to work and comes home to a human family and talks to his human friends about how boring their jobs are while they eat and drink together. He’ll never be able to experience any of that while living with vampires.”
“What if he doesn’t want that life?” Hoseok asked.
“He’ll never know if he doesn’t live it, right?
“And what if he doesn’t choose that life? What if he wants to stay in our world? You know he loves you more than anything.”
“He’s attached to me because I raised him, but he will forget about me quickly. Human emotions are fickle.”
“We both know you don’t believe that,” he frowned.
“You know it’s what I have to believe.”
“Hyung--”
“I have a lot of calls to make before sunrise. Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?”
He shook his head, taking the hint. “I’ll call you later, Yoongi-Hyung.”
“Let me know when you get home. Stay safe, Hobi.”
He smiled. “I’ll send you update photos every hour to let you know I’m alright.”
“Forget I asked,” Yoongi snorted, waving him off.
He found Jungkook still sitting on the sofa when he exited the office. He looked up when Hoseok came into the living room, looking behind him most likely for Yoongi.
“Hyung has a few more calls to make,” he told him. “I wouldn’t wait up for him, Jungkook. He’ll probably be in there until after sunrise.”
“Is he going to be alright?”
“He overworks himself all the time, so don’t be too worried.”
“I meant with the hunters,” Jungkook said, running his left hand over the tattoos on his right hand absently as he looked deep in thought--something Hoseok knew he did when he was anxious. “If he’s worried enough to try to send me away, there’s a good chance the hunters will make a move against Hyung. If they can wipe out a whole coven in one night, what will he do if they all attack him at once? I know Yoongi-Hyung is strong, but--”
“Hey, don’t stress about Yoongi.” Hoseok crouched down in front of him, offering him a reassuring smile. “These hunters are dangerous, I won’t lie about that, but we’re all taking the threat seriously and not underestimating them. Hyung is being careful, especially with you staying in Seoul. He’ll be fine.”
Jungkook nodded, but he didn’t look convinced.
“You’ll just have to stay close to him to make sure he’s safe,” Hoseok teased, laughing at the grumbled curses Jungkook shot at him. While Yoongi liked to pretend he had no idea how Jungkook felt about him, Hoseok saw no point in ignoring it. The kid wasn’t exactly good at hiding it, and Hoseok knew he felt a little relieved having someone he could talk to about his worries.
And, Hoseok liked to tease both his sire and his sire’s ward.
“As much fun as this has been,” he smirked, standing, “I should get home. Sunrise is in just a couple of hours, and I have a few things to do before bed.”
“Text one of us when you get home?”
He smiled. “Of course. Don’t kill my sire while you’re stuck here with him, alright?”
“No promises,” Jungkook laughed, walking him to the door.
He sighed once outside. Although he’d reassured Jungkook everything would be fine, he wasn’t so convinced. If this was the same group of hunters they’d faced years before, they weren’t going to be easy to take down. And they’ll be targeting Yoongi-Hyung more than anyone else.
***
“Hoseok!” Yoongi rushed to him as soon as he’d seen him hit the ground.
“I’m fine, Hyung,” he grimaced, getting to his feet as he held his bleeding side.
“You’re not fine, you dumbass,” Yoongi growled, pulling a small knife from his pocket and slicing his arm. “Drink.”
“I’m f--”
“Drink it, Hoseok.”
Cursing at the order, he took Yoongi’s outstretched arm and drank, his sire’s blood healing the gash running down his side and making his entire body tingle with that familiar electric sensation.
“I want you to go help the coven. It’s too dangerous here,” Yoongi told him once he’d stopped drinking.
“That will leave you alone. The leaders are still in here somewhere, so I should help you find them.”
“I can handle them alone, go.”
He watched Yoongi turn and run farther into the warehouse, cursing quietly to himself as he finally went in the opposite direction to help Namjoon and the other witches towards the front of the warehouse.
There was blood everywhere, and it was making his head spin. He was thankful for the fresh air when he finally made it outside where Namjoon was currently fighting several hunters.
“Hoseok!” Namjoon shouted, casting a spell that sent the hunters around him flying. “Where is Yoongi-Hyung?”
“He went after the leaders and ordered me to come here to help you.”
“Damnit, Yoongi,” Namjoon snapped. “Someone has to go in there with him; he knows he can’t fight them on his own.”
“I’ll go,” Seokjin said, wiping blood from his face. Hoseok wasn’t sure if it belonged to him or someone else.
“Thank you, Hyung,” Hoseok told him as he ran inside. He couldn’t go against an order, no matter how much he wanted to, so he just hoped Seokjin made it to Yoongi in time.
“How were the teams inside holding up?” Namjoon asked.
“Not good,” he admitted. “We lost over half before I was wounded and Hyung sent me away.”
“Same here,” Namjoon sighed. “They were better prepared to counter an attack than we thought.”
“What do we do now?”
“Keep fighting until we hear from Yoongi or Seokjin. If we don’t take out the hunters now, it’s all for nothing.”
Hoseok nodded, glancing back towards the warehouse. “Yeah.”
