the us did...ish...in the 70s... and didn’t feel like touching guns.
I started elementary school just after columbine, so i always assumed the lockdown drills came from that, but after reading your post i wanted to look it up and found out that the same drills we do today were created for drive by shootings.
“turn off all the lights and stay away from the windows, and stay quiet” not to confuse the shooter that the room is empty, but so that a shooter outside wouldn’t be able to make out any one. we just added lock the door and stay away from that too...because its easier than investing in a new system, new laws, or new hardware
My school wasn’t delicate when it came to them either, telling the students even in elementary to stay behind the brick walls, because they would be able to stop a bullet, and wood and plaster wouldn’t. an aid or principle would walk through the school, jiggling the handles of the doors, and any class that could be heard during a drill would be reprimanded
Maybe it’s because we were raised in that sort of atmosphere, a literal dystopian nightmare, that no matter where i go, i visualize my escape/hiding plan in the event of an active shooter.
That’s what we changed. The US changed the mentality of its children, rather than changing the (legal) environment we were brought up in.
I’ve been wondering…
After 9/11 happened, airports COMPLETELY changed their ways so that 9/11 would never happen again. So that an act of terror and horror and mass destruction could never happen again.
So why haven’t we done anything about school shootings? Even if we don’t act on more gun control, at the very least why aren’t we putting in metal detectors and more security and armed officers at the doors, just like we have at the airports (especially after 9/11)?
I mean, we can’t even bring liquids over 3oz in our carry-ons, yet next to nothing is being done about children being murdered in school.

LISTEN UP, PEOPLE.
https://twitter.com/schoolwalkoutUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor
The link above is to a twitter account that is spreading the news about a National School Walkout April 20th, the anniversary of the Columbine School Shooting. I am planning on taking part in this and I wanted to help spread the news about this.
There is also a petition that is being circulated through this link:
https://www.change.org/p/u-s-senate-national-high-school-walk-out-for-anti-gun-violence?recruiter=836997928&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial.nafta_milestone_share_ask_victory.control
Anything that you guys can do will help. If you can’t participate in the walkout itself, at least try to reblog so it’s passed around Tumblr.
Thanks!

A Twisted Hero’s Journey (SW meta)
I’m not the best when it comes to writing metas, but i was watching something on netflix and this popped into my head
“All hero’s journeys begin with the hero at rest in their home culture.
So one particular stage is the call to adventure. An outsider figure comes and calls them to adventure—says, “Come on, Luke. You’ve got to go do something now and help this girl.”
He embarks on a journey into the unknown, a run that’s usually much more crowded with the supernatural.
The hero is tested in these strange surroundings, and has to pass various trials in order to continue. Within that realm he meets various mentors and also various companion figures, who become sort of an entourage that he travels around with.
Typically he then has a near death experience-type adventure, where he plunges down into some kind of abyss.
But the hero survives this moment and achieves perhaps new knowledge or a treasure as a reward, and then he flees, pursued by the enemy.
From which he arises transformed, capable of fulfilling the quest on which he started out.
There’s one final test, and that is often a moment of life or death. The hero has to use all the knowledge he’s gained up until this far to come through that and succeed.
The end result, is a new world, a new status quo that comes into being.” (Myths and Monsters, season 1: episode 1)
Why the first 2 movies placed such importance on the burning temple scene, is because it’s the true beginning. This trilogy is the third Skywalker trilogy—father, son, grandson…but this time it has two heroes. Rey the traditional hero, and Ben follows the same path...except with a twist.
With Rey’s journey—each step if easily adapted. She leaves her life on Jakku to bring BB8 back to the Resistance, and meets Han and Chewie along the way like Luke did in the original trilogy. Around the same time, she discovers her connection to the force, and runs into Kylo Ren. After escaping her cell, she find Han and the others in time to watch her first mentor die (think Obi-wan dying in front of Luke in ep iv). She battles an injured Kylo Ren and survives, fleeing the first order with Finn and Chewie. In TLJ she finds her new mentor, Luke, after finally accepting her force abilities and Anakin’s lightsaber. From here, she travels to Kylo Ren, deciding that Luke was wrong about Ben Solo ever being “light.” By trusting him, Kylo Ren/Ben and Rey defeat Snoke like Vader with Palpatine, and bring about a new world…maybe not one she understands or wants, but none the less, “a new order.”
As a side note: I don’t consider Luke Rey’s second master, because she never really learns anything from him, beside “reach out and feel the force.” She never internalizes anything else he says regarding jedi, believing the light side is the only way to use the force--despite acting just as emotionally as kylo ren at points (i.e. attacking luke with her staff from behind)
Ben Solo’s story is much darker. It starts with him fully indoctrinated in the Jedi lifestyle—his uncle and mother, who he probably spent more time with than Han, where legends and leaders. They decided to train him, which would lead to Snoke discovering and calling out to Ben. The destruction of the temple lead Ben to joining Snoke (who would want to have a sit-down conversation with parents who abandoned and lied to you, as well as someone who just tried to murder you in your sleep?). With the fo, he has to learn how to use the dark side, and live up to snoke’s expectations and quests (like killing other jedis and force church people). Personally, I believe the Knights of Ren are something that existed before Ben turning into Kylo Ren, and he quickly rose through their ranks as someone who was highly skilled and force sensitive—this gives him his own crew of storm troopers to command as he carries out snokes missions (finding Lor San Tekka to find Luke). Unlike Rey who overcomes Kylo Ren in battle, he is met with failure (yoda: “the greatest teacher, failure is”), and Snoke makes sure he knows after he flees starkiller with Hux and Phasma. This loss makes him act bolder, more reckless (tfa he begs snoke to be given a chance to prove himself; tlj he stands up to snoke…twice!), and also presents the whole force-bond thing. He begins to connect with Rey, and discovers someone who is willing to listen to him (his treasure, like Rey and the lightsaber). Because of this connection, he finds the conviction to kill snoke by becoming sneakier, smarter (more sith like, but with more noble/grey intentions).
In my previous post, I made a few predictions about episode ix…but I’m going to alter them a little bit with the realization that this next movie, but run through the cycle a second expedited time.
· There’s a time lapse, to establish renperor’s new order (head canon: ben solo is really good with children, but terrible with other adults); rey is used to life among the resistance, and deepening her tie with the force, but doesn’t open a jedi academy (they’re in the middle of a bloody war!)
· Hux tells him, they learned about something the resistance plans on attacking, mentioning Rey (“the girl who killed Snoke”) to manipulate Kylo Ren in going himself (because he has to pretend he wants revenge on the person who killed the former leader, and also because [whether rey reciprocates or not] he has reylo feels).
· The resistance hears about their movements and is confused, so they travel to the planet, too, including rey in the millennium falcon.
· There, Hux stages a coup, ordering the stormtroopers to murder Kylo Ren to make it look like the Resistance did it, but he’s able to defend himself, and flees with his life, but injured. He might meet up with the Knights of Ren here, or Luke’s other ex-jedis.
· Eventually he comes in contact with Rey again. She’s disappointed in him, but not enough to let him die. Also Chewie and him need a better reunion and hash it out.
· He never becomes light, but learns to accept both sides—he also becomes her mentor in utilizing the dark side.
· At the end of the movie, they show up together and aid the Resistance/New Republic, in bringing down the First Order. Him leading the attack (sith=offense, jedi=defense). Although it feels repetitive, I would love it if it showed the resistance trying to attack him, not knowing where his loyalties lie.
Ultimately, Ben shouldn’t die—it sends a bad message, “the only way to redeem yourself is to sacrifice your life and die. Become a martyr.” Instead, like Karl Doenitz (the guy who became president of germany after hitler died), be punished for his complicit crimes, but not sentenced to death, and living out the rest of his life in relative obscurity following his release. This would be a change from Han and Luke receiving medals to Ben Solo willingly accepting his sentence. It would also be a bittersweet moment for leia (I don’t want them to kill her off, but write her character into an off-screen role—they had multiple opportunities to kill her in tlj and doing it off-screen would be an injustice to the character and carrie fisher) and rey, who believe in ben again, just to be separated.

Thoughts on TLJ...
So after sifting through tumblr after watching the movie...a few times, I’ve seen a lot of hate and love for Kylo Ren/Reylo. Personally I loved it! I’m usually highly critical of movie writing, but it was so complex, so unpredictable, that I didn’t realize it was 2 and a half hours until I left (i will admit some of the humor felt a little forced).
Anyway...from Rian’s direction I felt he did an incredible job with Ben Solo/Kylo Ren’s character (it’s going to be a long rant+ ix predictions)...
- He doesn’t hate his parents, but they still hurt him. They abandoned him, and he resents them for that. From other canon material it says that Han was a doting father in the beginning, but left the family to spend all his time racing. Leia understandably was busy trying to build the new republic and probably didn’t have a lot of time for her son, especially when he got older.
- Luke, his only other family member, was off exploring the galaxy for Jedi stuff, but trained Leia for a little while. Eventually she sent him off to train with Luke and his other padawans, traveling into the unknown regions where snoke must have first come across him.
- Then on top of it all, Luke was prepared to kill his own nephew. Even if he changed his mind last minute (like he did with Vader), Ben woke up to a glowing saber, which is unspoken jedi code for “I will kill you”. This meant his father left him, his mother sent him away, and his uncle was going to end it all.
-...not to mention, the novel “Bloodline” says he didn’t know he was related to Vader until he was 23. 23! That’s the majority of his life listening to tales of his parents and uncle leading a rebellion that celebrated the death of Darth Vader, and said uncle being the one who killed him(i doubt they would tell the galaxy that magic space hitler #2 found love and goodness inside him and turned against magic space hitler #1).
- This is just me speculating, but Snoke must have unconsciously (to Ben) “seduced” him in his sleep, because hearing voices talking to you isn’t normal especially if they tell you to kill people (but there’s cookies!). Snoke probably also sent someone to pick up Ben and a few other padawans but before Luke woke up under the rubble.
All of these together, the pain, anger, fear, it fueled his transition to the darkside. But it’s tenuous, because it all stems from rejection. The first order gave him a place to belong to, a mentor that focused on him, a group of companions among whom that he stood out (also loved the fact he was Vader’s blood).
In this last movie, we saw this shift. Snoke constantly called him weak and a failure (a nothing), the Knights of Ren were still absent, and someone finally listened to his story about Luke (I don’t think Leia or Han ever heard the real story, because if she did, Leia would have murdered Luke). Rey trusted him more than Luke “the Legend” Skywalker. However, she leaves him too.
PREDICTIONS!!!
So going into the next movie, I think we’re going to have a time jump. Rey and Kylo still have force bonds (seemingly at times when they feel lonely/alone) but it doesn’t happen as frequently with Rey constantly surrounded by the remnants of the resistance.
I don’t them to begin the movie with “General Leia Organa has died...” because it doesn’t give her character a proper goodbye, even if there is an emotional reaction. Instead, I’d prefer her to be called back to the New Republic. As many senators/diplomats were killed in tfa, a founding member of the Republic and Resistance is welcomed back despite her father. Even without being a leading presence in the resistance, she can give them the new republic’s support from afar.
This leave Poe as a new leader of the Resistance. Other factions mobilize, and more people rise against the first order.
(It’s all Hux’s fault with the starkiller, but..) Kylo Ren as the new supreme leader is forced to take responsibility. He keeps the Knights of Ren close as an intimidation factor, but a giant rift within the First Order erupts.
Ultimately, Rey reveals her connection to Kylo, and is met with shock and horror from her friends, and cast out. Dangerous.
The dethroned Kylo will come to her right away with possibly former Luke students(?), eventually leading to a final battle. The First Order+Original Knights of Ren vs. The Resistance+the Grey Jedi.

sherlock turned up the amount of morphine he wanted, but the “self-serve” iv drips won’t allow overdosing--it gives out a measured dose at regular intervals that depend on the pain level you set. if anything that initial dose would theoretically give him enough relief to relax but turns it down so he doesn’t become disoriented as a side effect...except that probably didn’t work out too well, and he got lost within his mp.
That whole scene (besides the whole backwards ekg) reminded me of one thing “morphine or cocaine?” When sherlock starts to go back into his mp in tab, victorian john asks sherlock what he took: morphine (read mp, sherl at hospital) or cocaine (read no mp, the plane is real). just something else that felt like the writers asking “is this real or not?” because victorian john should know since he’s actually sherlock’s imagination
Okay so, didn’t Sherlock turn up the drugs in the hospital? Meaning he would be high, right? And he probably fell asleep and that’s where EMP starts. He dreamt up the entirety of S4. That’s what I’m going with. Unless he turned the drugs off for a bit and went into his mind palace as he was in pain. Idk what to think anymore but I’m here for either one tbh

i was just looking at the burnt “221b” promo pic, and i know someone said it before, but the hole in the wall looks like an anatomical heart. as if they were teasing “burning sherlocks heart out.” but it isn’t 221b really, and if you look closely the rooms continue on and on with a staircase in the background as if it were a castle or (i dare say) a palace.
now i want to say that this is fuel for emp theory (john and sherlock trapped inside a burnt and crumbling mind palace along with billy the skull), but at the same time i agree with the creator of “sherlock is garbage, and here’s why”. even if it is emp, we still have been forced to watch something that is unquestioningly poor writing for the sake of a reveal (but then again i could see mark snarkily creating an emp series after the way people responded to tab).
Problematic Promos
Now that some time has passed, I was taking a look back through the promotional materials for Season 4, and I noticed something. I apologize if someone has already mentioned this stuff! I looked around for a meta with this topic, but I didn’t find one, so here we go!
I recall that when the promotional materials for Season 4 were released we all sort of commented on how dark everything in the photos appears, what the hair looked like, how the burned out flat photo with just Sherlock and John in it looks like a heart, and how the smiley doesn’t show up in the reflection in the flooded photo. I also recall intense discussion about the three photos in the chess themed set, and how the leak of the final photo drew so much attention from The Powers That Be. All of these are valid catches, but I noticed a few other things relating to the promos.
I’m not sure what they all mean, to be honest, but I do know that everything on this show is deliberate, so…
1. There are still no photos of Eurus/Sian Brooke in the official photos on the BBC One Sherlock site. Surely by now it would be ok to release some. I mean, Sian Brooke is attractive and well known enough to warrant some photos! They have certainly included her in some of the post season videos. But if you’re looking for a lovely, composed, high resolution shot of Eurus or any of her personalities, you’re going to be disappointed. I think this is weird, especially given that we see both Culverton Smith and Jim Moriarty (and he was a big secret) in the photos.
2. This photo is NOT of 221B. Look closely.

The smiley is different than the original! It’s tilted wrong and aligns with the wallpaper differently. It’s just not the same. I know I have seen a meta on the Miss Me Smiley from this image:
The burned out smiley almost looks like a mirrored version of this one, doesn’t it?

So what about this bumped out area in the wall in our 221b? Not there in the burned out flat.

Where are the windows on either side of the room? Again, not there.

And what about that trim high up on the burned out left wall? Not there in 221b.
The people in this show KNOW their set. This can’t be a mistake or something where they thought, hey…that’s close enough.
So what does it mean?
3. Now on to the seven images that they released the week before the season started. One a day, a right? Burned out flat in the background. I noticed a few things about these images.
But first, this image for reference:

Every one of these characters is wearing the same clothing as the group shot, but with a coat/jacket added in the individual photos, with one exception.
Take a look:
(Greg’s photo is missing from the BBC One Sherlock site. A little odd, given the wind-up they gave these each day…but anyway.)

Molly.
Molly is the exception. Her clothing is completely different under her lab coat.

To me, it seems like this singles her out in some way. Just like they single Mycroft out in another way.
Can you see it?

It’s the smiley again. In each of the other six photos, the smiley moves around, but it is the original smiley from 221b. The size, shape, and orientation are correct.
But Mycroft’s smiley is different.
It’s the strange, new smiley from the burned out flat photo, and unlike the other character shots, this smiley isn’t on the 221b wallpaper.
I think it may have been @the-7-percent-solution who commented to the effect that if you want to mess with people’s heads, just mess with their surroundings. Make things a little bit off, and that will make the audience uncomfortable, and they probably won’t even recognize why. Maybe that’s what’s going on here. Or maybe there is some deeper meaning.
I don’t know for sure, but I do still believe that these weird details are part of a larger plan. The cast and crew are too attuned to the details of the show to overlook errors or do things half-assed.
Thoughts?
As always, apologies for tagging the unwilling or missing a tag! Please share with whoever may be interested. Thank you!!

OMG YES!! at the beginning of s3 mycroft even says he’s kept a weathered eye on john--it’s so similar to what he did with john and sherlock s1, except this time he had to actually hire someone to give him intel rather than offer bribe money. he would have had her close by, because M=Mycroft not moriarty (s1 scripts) and she was the sniper that killed madame shan (also tbb would be the only ep mycroft doesn’t feature in without the snippet at the end). tab was right, mary wasn’t working for moriarty she was working for mycroft, which calls into question: did mary want to marry john or was she hired to do so.
DID MYCROFT SEND MARY TO SHOOT MAGNUSSEN???

hi everyone i’d appreciate if you could boost this and donate if you can. basically a first year student at my university (RHUL) has been kicked out of an abusive home. his parents have also messed with his student finances so that he is no longer getting a student loan, and have taken a loan in his name so that he now owes even more money. from what i understand one of the reasons he is now estranged from his family is because they are homophobic.
i can personally vouch for connor, tyler’s boyfriend, who i’ve met a few times and is a lovely person.
