fandom obsession with long fics is hurting fics just as much as it's hurting writers. because people tend to disregard anything below 10k most of the time (I've seen people say they don't read anything below 60k) writers feel the need to stretch their stories, to get more words in there to get more people to read their hard work. and I understand. no one wants to pour their heart and soul and time into something and have people not read it. but not all stories need to be that long. not all stories need every single thought and emotion of the characters explored. it genuinely hurts the story because you're supposed to be building towards something, building tension, and the longer it takes to get there, the more detours you take, you'll start to lose your audience. I've been seeing this more and more in smut scenes in particular. there's tension to maintain there, building towards literal and metaphorical release, and you don't want to maintain that tension too long or you'll lose it before you've reached your destination. idk. obviously read whatever you want. write whatever you want. but hopefully not for some arbitrary number some people on the internet set as the perfect number. if you think your story needs to be long do that. but more importantly if you think it doesn't, don't force it. let it be

cain complex noun /ˈkān ˈkäm-ˌpleks/
Definition:
A psychological phenomenon rooted in sibling rivalry, characterized by intense jealousy, hostility, or aggression toward a sibling (often an elder or more favored one), stemming from perceived parental favouritism or competition for resources/attention. The term derives from the biblical story of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4), where Cain murders his brother Abel out of envy.
