I was feeling agitated and artblocked yesterday so I decided to give my brain a rest by watching TV and then the next thing I knew these were in front of me

was looking at the various costumes in Mario Kart World and discovered a really cool detail: there's actually some variations in jewelry between costumes for several female characters!

almost all of Peach's costumes use the same blue earrings as her base outfit, but the Touring outfit swaps them for teal ones.

Daisy's Touring and Vacation outfits use chunky four-petal teal earrings, and her oasis outfit uses a four-petaled gold variation of her normal earrings!

Birdo's Vacation outfit swaps her diamond ring for a pearl one (probably to thematically match her mermaid-themed bow), and has a VERY subtly pinker diamond ring for her Pro Racer outfit. it's a little easier to see when comparing the preview images for her outfits.

Pauline and Rosalina don't have any differences in their jewelry between costumes, but if Pauline gets new costumes in future she might get different jewelry too!

Some thoughts on UFO 50 and the nature of preservation

This is extremely late to the boat given the game was released in September of last year and the secret game was found and unpacked not long after that, but having finally given myself the time to sit down and learn more about it I now have a thought that keeps rotating in my mind and I want to write it down. Spoilers for the secret metanarrative below.

Tao Nemuru’s cultlike management of UFO Soft and in particular the way he ended up tanking the company in pursuit of “preserving” it for a supposed utopian AI-run future reminds me of a lot of similar cult things. There’s the way the heaven’s gate cult was focused on the idea of preserving their souls by “sending” them to the supposed spacecraft in the hale-bopp comet. There’s the way that “theories” about supposed ai-run futures dominate supposedly “logical” tech spaces in ways similar to Tao’s grasshopper philosophy.

The one that it reminds me of the most though is the kind of optimism there is about the field of cryonics, despite the lack of evidence to support that a body kept in that state would be in a state possible to revive were revival technology ever made real, and the horrifying state most of the early attempts wound up in due to money and resources drying up. The situation with the cryonics institute of California is probably the most infamous, with the few capsules available being cut open to stuff more bodies inside them and stored in a rented crypt until all resources for upkeep dried up and the bodies were left to rot (if you want to learn more about it and similar incidents I recommend the Cryogenic Catastrophes video by Whang!). It does not feel coincidental to me that the extra-secret location in Miasma Tower is one where you can find capsules with no clear way to open them and that there’s a possibility that one of them was opened before its intended date to hide a body inside of it.

Given all this, it feels very meaningful that the only “evidence” we have of UFO soft is a storage locker full of things an ex-employee rescued from getting trashed/sold off when the company finally went under rather than the result of Tao’s grand dreams of preserving the company’s work, and it feels especially meaningful that the only reason the work of UFO soft is now “remembered” is because of the “emulation” of UFO 50 made by the “recovery team”. Emulations are often the only way people can find and experience and fall in love with older games while the videogame companies who own the rights (COUGHnintendoCOUGH) will take down emulations of games they refuse to make available for anyone to play or only allow to be playable though gatekept methods. The deep irony is that for as much as Tao was obsessed with the idea of eternal life and eternal play, his vision removing the human element to the games—the people who make them and the people who play them—did nothing but rob UFO soft of any chance it had to keep existing and to rob the games of the chance to ever be played and remembered.

Because of the efforts of that ex-employee, we know about UFO soft. We know about their incredible catalog of work. We know about the things that were loved and important to the developers. We know that Chiffon Bola once existed despite the efforts the company made to pretend she never did.

What did Tao’s efforts result in? A bunch of capsules left to rot in a flooding basement.
