A tangent I decided to separate from this post by @official-ladyblog: how the ways we’ve seen people avoid akuma corruption pushes the envelope for societal norms. (Not unusual for this show, and I love it.)

The Zombizou scene with Marinette’s frustration being great enough to attract an akuma, but recovering? Ms. Bustier fighting it off through sheer force of will, and her student helping her do that as long as she did? Two ladies giving each other strength. One of the biggest shows of internal strength, by far in opinion—from an ordinary woman with no superpowers, just incredible compassion.

[pls pay attention to how Caline immediately goes from a protective posture to pulling away as soon as she feels her mind being invaded, and how Marinette’s response is to encourage her]

Look at the outrage and determination on her face right before arguing with HM, Caline is a BAMF and I would die for her.

Women don’t get a lot of badass moments in action TV & film, traditionally. ML is an exception in general, but now we get to see a soft-spoken woman, a teacher, a character we’ve taken for granted, say to the most powerful villain in the show, “I’m not letting you do this.”

Now let’s parallel & contrast: Gorilla, arguably the most stereotypically masculine character in the show. He’s stoic, he’s intimidating, and he’s not only quiet, but literally all we hear from him are grunts. Old-school tough guy taken to the extreme. When he instantaneously deflected an akuma in Gigantitan because he saw Adrien safe and sound?

Look at this man’s smile. That’s relief out of genuine, nurturing love, out of deep caring; something men are discouraged from developing or showing, and the world is poorer for it.

… You know what, more Gorilla appreciation because I love this character. Being from the Represte household, most characterization moments are subtle and/or blink-and-you’ll-miss-it. 

I know this doesn’t look like much, but these little things are very, VERY important to me. Gorilla makes sure there’s a connection before signaling that they have to go. Then he waits for some kind of assent before turning them away. He puts a hand on Adrien’s far shoulder as a protective gesture, but still gives him space. It’s all very patient, gentle, and respectful.

This is what I meant when I said “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it.” It’s less than a second, and the viewer is immediately distracted by Adrien turning his head to the camera, but throughout this entire sequence, Gorilla’s been the only adult to show empathy towards Adrien. Look at this man’s concern.

Imagine if Alya and Marinette got into an argument because Alya was tired of Marinette never facing her fears and talking to Adrien. So Marinette, enraged and determined to prove Alya wrong, storms over to Adrien and says “You wanna go?!?”

It’s only after Adrien nervously chuckles and hesitantly backs away that she realizes that she forgot the “to the movies with me” part of her sentence
